VIDEO GAME DESIGN Grades 1–5 and Grades 1–8

During Video Game Design run by Lavner Camps, using the powerful program Multimedia Fusion 2, campers learn how to create their own video games for use on computers, and create Apps compatible with iOS® devices (the Ipad® and iPhone®) and the Android™.

No previous experience is necessary, however more complicated projects are offered to campers based upon their age and ability. Starting with a blank screen, campers begin with a single frame where they place objects, scenery, a scoreboard, and number of lives. They then use the events editor to program how objects behave in this environment. The games and Apps are then expanded to multiple frames and levels, resulting in a complete multi-level arcade and/or platform game/App. Campers are grouped according to three levels based on experience.

IMAGINE, INVESTIGATE, INVENT: An interactive STEM Workshop for Girls

Girls Grades 5–8

Join us as we explore the fascinating opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and learn how to design a bridge for crossing a crevasse on Mt. Everest, build a survival shelter on a remote Pacific Island, and learn how to deal with a disease outbreak in the Amazon. During this workshop girls will use their creativity and innovative techniques to complete design projects involving hands-on investigations and data collection. We will explore the areas of computer science, manufacturing, robotics, materials science, finance, biology, chemistry, physics, math, and engineering. By applying their knowledge across many STEM disciplines and concepts, girls will hone their analytical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration skills to solve real-world problems. Girls will get to meet with Stuart alumnae and other women in cutting-edge STEM fields via in-person and Skype visits. Instructor: Dr. Michael Schwartz, Director of STEM Programs at Stuart.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CAMP Grades 5–8

Beginners and Intermediates will design and create a brand for a business! Campers express their creativity and learn practical and technical computer skills for this growing and evolving industry. Join us for a fun, creative, and educational experience! Graphic designers are visual storytellers whose ultimate goal is to sell a product or an idea through effective visual communication. Using Adobe® Photoshop®, Illustrator®, and InDesign®, campers learn to complement their creativity with the proper technical skills to produce designs that communicate messages and leave lasting visual impressions. Groups present their final projects on Friday afternoon to the entire camp. Campers take home a CD as a portfolio of their design work and hard copies of their business cards.

MINECRAFT CAMP Grades 1–5

Come experience the exciting and educational world of Minecraft®! Stretch your imagination and creativity, learn and improve your skills, and work individually or collaboratively (on our own private server) in the same world! Using Minecraft as a learning tool, campers participate in one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms to create their own world. By using blocks and various resources, campers will literally “mine” and “craft” their own creations, with some project options including: dream homes, towers, bridges, castles, caves, roller coasters and entire amusement parks. Campers may also construct famous buildings and structures like the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Golden Gate Bridge, Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Egyptian Pyramids, and/or structures of their own choosing.

Campers are required to arrive with their own Minecraft® account, which can be purchased at Minecraft.net. Once this account is purchased, campers will have access to their account for use throughout the year.

FILMMAKING CAMP Grades 1–5

So you want to be in film? This is the camp for you! Run by Lavner Camps, the ultimate goal of camp is to teach campers how to start and complete a film project from scratch. Campers script a short film, develop characters, film, edit, and produce a final copy. The final product can be used as a reel for aspiring actors/directors, and all of the skills learned at camp help campers understand many aspects of working in film. This camp is a combination of scripting, acting, directing, and editing. Campers are grouped by age and ability level. Join us for a totally unique and fun summer experience where campers are super-creative, challenged, and produce a final product they can be proud of, take home on a CD, and watch for years to come.
