Boatbuilders looking to source high-

quality marine equipment at affordable

prices should not miss this year’s 1st

Taiwan International Boat Show, which

runs from May 8-11 in the southern port

city of Kaohsiung. Local equipment

and accessories firms will be out in

force, hoping to strengthen ties with

existing customers while forging new

partnerships with overseas firms.

According to Showboats

International’s 2014 Global Order

Book, Taiwan is now the sixth largest

yacht-building nation worldwide – a

position that is driving innovation in

the field of related equipment and

components. The small island nation

is a manufacturing powerhouse with

a long history of skilled workmanship,

making this year’s show a ‘must-see’

event for the region.

Of the nearly 200 exhibitors

expected to take a booth at the newly

built Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre

in May, local marine equipment and

accessories firms will feature heavily.

Man Ship Machinery & Hardware,

for instance, will be displaying its

latest stainless steel hatches and

friction-hinged port lights, along

with a stainless steel saloon door

and a new TV lift. Other confirmed

exhibitors include Aritex, Asia’s largest

yacht hardware and accessories

manufacturer, Cantalupi Lighting

importer Cantalupi Taiwan, and

crankshaft specialist Yamamotor.

Man Ship’s Ching Huang expects

this year’s four-day event to help lay

the foundations for

future success. “We hope

it becomes the biggest yacht festival

in South East Asia,” he says, “as this

would create valuable economic

opportunities for everyone.”

In addition to supplying OEM clients

in Taiwan with marine chandlery, Man

Ship also produces exclusive lines for

several US firms.

“The Taiwan government recently

opened the sea region and modified

yacht management regulations so that

we have more freedom and space to

do business,” Ching adds. “No doubt

after this show, sales will boom quickly.

Foreign buyers will be able to source

high-quality products at a lower price,

and Taiwanese sellers will be able to

sell more products at the show. Surely

that’s a good thing.”

Yamamotor, Taiwan’s leading supplier

of outboard motor spare parts, is

turning its attention to the inboard

market with plans to develop a new

range of parts specifically designed

for inboard motors. The plans are the

result of repeated customer requests.

“At this stage we have a flexible

impeller, but we’re still working on it,”

says company owner Ted Liao. “We

plan to promote it in the near future,

with commercial exposure very soon.”

In the meantime, Yamamotor

will be displaying its crankshafts,

drive shafts, propellers, connecting

rods, pistons and other marine-

related products at the 1st Taiwan

International Boat Show in May.

the country’s sole importer and

distributor for Cantalupi Lighting

from Italy, Cantalupi Taiwan will

be taking a large booth inside

the Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre

to display its new downlights,

underwater lights and back-lighted

panels to the visiting public. One of

the highlights is Daly, a new series of

eight downlights designed to create

different ambiances throughout a

yacht’s interior. Extremely versatile

and multifunctional, the new LEDs

automobiles and other industries

– mostly for export to the US. The

company established its outboard

motor parts department in 1993,

focusing on professional outboard

crankshafts and other parts for

transmission systems. The Taichung-

based manufacturer now has over

2,000 items at its factory, which

employs 36 people and turns over

around US$7m annually.

“We want to support Taiwan and

show our strength to the end-user,”

says Liao, adding that 60 per cent

of Yamamotor’s output is exported.

“Our main market is the Middle East

and Africa, as well as South Africa,.

They’ve all been performing great

in recent years. At the moment we

export to more than 30 agents in

different countries worldwide.”

To help cope with growing demand,

Yamamotor works with over 40 local

manufacturers to provide its products,

with partners in Singapore, Indonesia,

Malaysia, Japan and China.

Aritex, Asia’s largest yacht

hardware and accessories

manufacturer, will be one of the

most prominent exhibitors at this

year’s Taiwan International Boat

Show in Kaohsiung. The company

will be taking a large booth to

display its anchors, mooring posts,

railings, steering wheels and other

stainless steel products to potential

new clients at home and abroad.

Aritex has invested heavily in R&D

over the years, with 20 specialists

now working in the company’s

R&D and design departments.

The company, which is based in

Kaohsiung, custom-builds products

for some of the world’s top

superyacht yards – among them,

Lürssen, Nobiskrug, Feadship and

Royal Huisman, as well as US yards

Trinity, Palmer Johnson, Christensen

and Derektor. Australia’s Riviera,

Maritimo and Muir are also clients.

Closer to home, Aritex is a major

supplier of bespoke equipment

to Taiwanese shipyards such as

Horizon, Ocean Alexander, Kha

Shing and more.

Around 300 people work at

Aritex’s three plants in Daliau

Village, Kaohsiung, where

substantial sums have been invested

in automated CNC equipment.

After five years of research and

development, Man Ship Machinery

& Hardware will be displaying its

new friction-hinged portlights at the

1st Taiwan International Boat Show

in May. Unlike traditional hinges,

Man Ship’s friction hinges allow

users to open a hatch or portlight

at any angle. With no need for a

support or hook, the hinge takes up

very little space and is easy to use. It

is also aesthetically pleasing.

Man Ship has been producing

stainless steel hatches, portlights,

boat windows, saloon doors

and other yacht fittings from its

Kaohsiung base since 1982. The

company exports around 60 per

cent of all output.

“Generally speaking the US

market has always been the best

performing, and then Europe,” says

Man Ship president Ali Huang. “Now,

however, our European distributor is

our main customer.”

Huang says that growing demand

for product has led the company

to invest around TWD$1,000m

into a new factory in the Southern

Star Luxury Yacht Building Park in

Kaohsiung. “Our warehouse and

factory have reached their limit due

to increased business,” says Huang.

“Therefore, we’re planning to get

a bigger factory and renew our

equipment.”
