amy BamBenek

The UNCW volleyball program continues to make great strides under former Coastal Carolina standout Amy Bambenek.

Entering her sixth season in the Port City, Bambenek has turned the

Seahawks into one of the top up-and-coming programs in the southeast region. Under her guidance, UNCW has won double-digit matches in four of her five seasons and has claimed five regular-season tournaments.

UNCW enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history in 2013, winning three in-season tournaments and posting 20 victories for just the ninth time in the program’s 40-year history. The Seahawks finished third in the CAA standings with a school-record eight league victories and made their first CAA Tournament appearance since 2000, knocking off William & Mary in the first round before falling to Northeastern.

Individually, senior Christi Laite earned First-Team All-CAA honors, becoming the first UNCW player in 20 seasons to earn the distinction. Laite was also recognized for her work in the classroom as she became the first Seahawk to be named CAA Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year for volleyball. Sophomore Meredith Peacock and freshman Nicole Lott were also recog-nized as both players garnered Second-Team All-CAA distinction while Lott was also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

The 2012 campaign saw UNCW record double-digit wins for the third time in four seasons under Bambenek as the team posted victories over state foes Campbell, High Point and North Carolina Central as well as Co-lonial Athletic Association foes George Mason, James Madison and William & Mary. Laite earned Second-Team All-CAA recognition for the second con-secutive season while Laite and three other players garnered All-Tourna-ment Team recognition a total of six times during the regular season.

The Seahawks enjoyed a successful inaugural campaign under Bam-benek in 2009 as the team posted its highest win total since the 1996 sea-son and its most CAA victories since 2002. The team also captured its third in-season tournament title in as many seasons with a victory at the David-son Wildcat Classic.

The 2010 season saw the Seahawks post victories over in-state rivals Campbell, Elon and North Carolina A&T. Individually, three players earned All-Tournament Team honors a total of four times while five returning play-ers set new personal career highs in more than 10 different statistical cat-egories.

The 2011 campaign produced the Seahawks highest Colonial Ath-letic Association win total in 24 seasons, highlighted by victories over then league-leading James Madison and a sweep of William & Mary for the first

time in program history. UNCW’s strong showing in league play would be rewarded as Laite earned Second-Team All-CAA distinction, becoming the first UNCW player since the 2003 season to earn all-conference accolades.

Bambenek, 37, came to the Port City after eight seasons as an assis-tant and associate head coach at George Washington University, where she played a key role in the development of the Colonials program in the nation’s capital.

Bambenek played four years for Coastal Carolina from 1995-98 and led Coastal to the Big South Conference championship and NCAA Tourna-ment in 1996. A four-year starter at outside hitter and right-side hitter, she currently ranks fifth all-time in kills and total attacks, and third in aces for the Chanticleers.

The Chillicothe, Ohio, native began her coaching career at Florida State in 1998, and helped the Seminoles capture the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference title and advance to the 1998 NCAA Tournament. She assisted with recruiting and coordinated team travel, game day operations, tour-nament scheduling and videotape exchange at FSU for three years as the Seminoles amassed a 54-45 record.

Bambenek moved on to GW as an assistant coach in 2001 and as-sisted with all phases of Coach Jojit Coronel’s program. She served as the primary recruiting coordinator, assisted with daily practice plans, coordinat-ed opponent and tournament scheduling, and managed fundraising efforts for the Colonials.

GW posted a 19-11 overall record and 9-4 mark in the Atlantic-10 Conference in 2008, winning the A-10 East Division and earning the third seed in the A-10 Tournament. GW’s freshman setter, Alyssa Valentine, was named A-10 Rookie-of-the-Year, marking Bambenek’s second recruit to achieve the honor. Sophomore Leah Hill and senior Liz Moult earned Sec-ond-Team All-10 laurels and senior Maggie Wright was selected the A-10’s Student-Athlete of the Year.

The Ohioan was inducted into the Chillicothe High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. She ihas coached the Chesapeake Regional USA High Performance juniors team in a national event in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the summer of 2007.

Bambenek earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Manage-ment from CCU in 1998 and completed her Master of Science Degree in Sport Administration from FSU in 2000.
