Aloe

ALOE FEROX

An attractive form of Aloe ferox is found

in Kwazulu-Natal, particularly between

the midlands and the coast in the Umko-

maas and Umlaas river catchment areas.

This used to be known as A. candela-

brum and has subsequently been included

in the species.

The bitter aloe will reach 2-3 metres in

height with the leaves arranged in a ro-

sette. The “A. Candelabrumform” has an

elegant shape with the leaf tips curving

slightly downwards. The spines along the

leaf edge are reddish in colour. Spines

may also be present on upper and lower

surfaces of the leaves as well. Young

plants tend to be very spiny.

This aloe forms a beautiful display and

attracts many bird and insects to the

flowers which in turn brings yet more

birds to your garden.

ALOE VERA

Aloe can be mat-forming or shrubby ev-

ergreen perennials, with rosettes of

fleshy leaves and small tubular flowers in

racemes or panicles

A. vera is an evergreen perennial to

0.6m, forming rosettes of fleshy, nar-

row, dull green leaves with spiny mar-

gins, with long racemes of tubular

greenish-yellow flowers 3cm in length

in racemes to 90cm in length

Aristea

ARISTEA CAPITATA (MAJOR) The plants form thick clumps of long strap-shaped evergreen leaves, which stand upright to

1.5 metres. From October the flowering stems appear tall and strong above the leaves, often

8 or more stems grow from each clump.

The flowers are formed along the top part of the stem, tightly arranged on little branches

forming small bunches of buds. There are a few hundred flowers along each stem, but they

open only a few at a time and last for less than a day. The 6 bright blue petals of each

flower open wide, creating a flat saucer of about 25mm across with the 3 yellow anthers

and sword-shaped stigma in the center. By the afternoon the open flowers start to wilt

and close with the petals twisting around each other. The flowers are pollinated by pollen -

collecting bees that are active early in the day. The old flowering stems remain upright for

months after flowering and are quite attractive, turning a rich brown colour. Under-

ground Aristea capitata has a rhizome from which the plants often resprout.

CAREX MORROWII

VARIEGATED A lovely, sun-loving, evergreen variety

with slender, light green leaves attrac-

tively edged creamy-white. Originating

in Japan, great for using in the rock gar-

den or as edging, and makes a striking

container plant. Semi-hardy.

CAREX BUCHANANII

RED ROOSTER A superb evergreen plant, ideal in a

mixed perennial border, for show-

stopping block planting, or even as a

feature plant in a container. It's ex-

tremely versatile, tolerating almost any

soil, (even boggy) and aspect. Its narrow,

triangular blades are bronze-red and flex

gracefully in the breeze. Semi-hardy.

CAREX MORROWII SILK

TASSEL Grows in a fountain-like form with fine-

textured leaves spreading out over the

ground. It has a soft, flowing, iridescent

look and at first glance, it appears to be

a sparkling, silvery green mound. The

‘glimmering’ is an illusion caused by fine-

lined, deep-green borders and a silvery

white stripe along the length of the foli-

age. Beautiful planted in masses in a

woodland garden, or in a shady area. It is

an excellent sedge to plant alongside

angular plants to soften the landscape. If

given sufficient moisture, Silk Tassel can

tolerate sun; in shade or part shade it

thrives in moist to average soil. Semi-

hardy.

CAREX TESTACEA

tall, and can spread about 3-4 feet.

Prefers sun or partial shade, regular

water, drought tolerant once estab-

lished. Fragrant white star-shaped

flowers, red plum-like fruit. Does well

near the ocean, makes a very attrac-

tive, dense groundcover. Fire-resistant

both summer and autumn displays.

C. macrocarpa deals well with

salt-laden winds, making it a

good choice for coastal areas.

Blooms for months at a time.

The ornamental plump,

round, crimson fruit appears

in summer and autumn at the

same time as the blooms. In

moderate, coastal areas the

fruits appear through the

year.

Chondropetalum & Coleonema

CHONDROPETALUM TECTORUM This plant takes its species name from the Latin word tectorum, meaning roofing, which probably refers to its use a thatching material. Chondropeta-lum is a member of the restio family from the Western Cape region of South Africa. Plants are tender and need a sheltered, well-drained spot in full sun to grow well. In the UK plants are not reliably hardy and should be grown in pots and taken into the shel-ter of a cool greenhouse. Water well during the growing season but keep plants on the dry side during the win-ter months. Remove any old shoots as they turn brown and wither but avoid any other trimming.

COLEONEMA PULCHELLUM PINK Fine heath-like foliage with masses of starry dark pink flowers in winter to early summer. Grows to 1.2m, but can easily be kept trimmed in any shape, low hedge, bonsai, topiary or informal border. A member of the buchu fam-ily, plant in well drained sunny position. Prune lightly in summer to shape, feed with slow release 3:1:5 or organic fer-tiliser and water regularly for best re-sults.

COLEONEMA PULCHELLUM SUNSET GOLD This spreading evergreen shrub grows to 2 feet tall and spreads to 4-6 feet. It has needle-like yellowish-green foliage and pale-pink flowers that appear from winter to spring.

mer. Best in full coastal sun to light shade - some shade protec-

tion necessary in hotter inland gardens. It is drought tolerant in

coastal gardens but responds well to occasional to regular irri-

gation. Useful in dry gardens but also offers a tropical look. A

great container plant.

CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS REDSTAR A good ingredient for a jungle or tropical-themed garden, the

cabbage palm is a striking foliage plant with its long, thin, arch-

ing, bronze-red leaves. As a smaller cultivar of the species, it

does particularly well in pots on a patio, though it can also be

used as summer bedding around the likes of a taller, flamboy-

ant clump of cannas. Since it isn't totally hardy, it must be kept

in a frost-free place over winter. If being grown outside per-

manently, it needs to be planted in a sheltered hot spot in soil

that drains freely. If outside, the plant will need some protec-

tion over winter, so wrap it up in fleece to protect it from

frosts.

CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS

RED SENSATION > Fast growing woody plant that can be grown as a palm-like shrub

or a small tree. Its narrow, sword-like upper leaves remain

erect while the lower leaves in the tip cluster droop. Panicles of

Dietes

DIETES BICOLOR

Clump-forming rhizomatous perennial

plant with long sword-like pale-green

leaves, growing from multiple fans at

the base of the clump. This species

belongs to the Iridaceae (Iris) family. It

can form large clumps if left undis-

turbed for years. This species is com-

mon in horticulture in its native South

Africa, where it is often used in public

gardens, beautification of commercial

premises and along roadsides.

The blooms are yellow with three dark

purple spots, each surrounded by an

orange outline, and are followed by a

capsule that may bend the flower stalks

to the ground. Ripe seeds (dark brown

in colour) are dispersed when the cap-

sule dries and splits.

The leaves of Dietes bicolor are nar-

rower than those of Dietes grandi-

flora and Dietes iridioides, and tend to

arch more.

DIETES

GRANDIFLORA

The blooms are white marked with

yellow and violet. Dark markings are

found at the base of the outer tepals.

These are borne in abundance during

summer, especially after rain. Flowers

are followed by 5 cm long green cap-

sules that contain very dark brown

seeds, these are dispersed when the

capsule splits open.

Dionæa &

Nepenthes

NEPENTHES RAJAH

HOOK Nepenthes rajah is famous for its

large pitchers (urn-like modified

leaves), which allow the plants to

catch and digest animals. Insects, and

in particular ants, make up the ma-

jority of prey. However there are

reliable observations that, on occa-

sion in the wild, rats have been

trapped by this species.

DIONÆA MUSCIPULA Dionæa muscipula, is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East

Coast of the United States. It catches its prey—chiefly insects and arachnids—with a trap-

ping structure formed by the terminal portion of each of the plant's leaves and is triggered

by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces. Dionæa is a monotypic genus closely related to

the waterwheel plant and sundews, all of which belong to the family Droseraceæ.

Ficus

FICUS ELASTICA

BURGUNDY It is a large tree in

the banyan group of figs, growing

to 30–40 metres (98–130 ft)

(rarely up to 60 metres or 200

feet) tall, with a stout trunk up to

2 metres (6.6 ft) in diameter. The

trunk devel-

ops aerial and buttressing roots to

anchor it in the soil and help sup-

port heavy branches. It has broad

shiny oval leaves 10–35 centime-

tres (3.9–14 in) long and 5–15 cen-

timetres (2.0–5.9 in) broad; leaf

size is largest on young plants

(occasionally to 45 centimetres or

18 inches long), much smaller on

old trees (typically 10 centimetres or 3.9 inches long). The

leaves develop inside a sheath at the apical meristem, which

grows larger as the new leaf develops. When it is mature, it

unfurls and the sheath drops off the plant. Inside the new

leaf, another immature leaf is waiting to develop.

FICUS LYRATA (syn. Ficus pandurata), commonly

known as the fiddle-leaf fig, is

a species of fig tree, native to west-

ern Africa, from Cameroon west to

Sierra Leone. It grows in lowland

tropical rainforest. It is a banyan fig

(Ficus subgenus Urostigma) that com-

monly starts life as an epiphyte high

in the crown of another tree; it then

sends roots down to the ground

which envelop the trunk of the host

tree and slowly strangle it. It can also

grow as a free-standing tree on its

own, growing up to 12–15 m (39–

49 ft) tall. The leaves are variable in shape, but often with a

broad apex and narrow middle, resembling a lyre or fiddle;

they are up to 45 cm (18 in) long and 30 cm (12 in) broad,

though usually smaller, with a leathery texture, prominent

veins and a wavy margin. The fruit is a green fig 2.5-3 cm (1-¼

in) diameter.

DIPLADENIA SANDERI ROSEA PINK Superb climber that will display pretty flowers from spring right through to the end of summer. It does not need much care and is very resistant to draught. Some sources say that Dipladenia con-tains a toxic irritant which should not be touched or ingested.

DIPLADENIA SANDERI ROSEA RED Like the pink, these are both superb climbers displaying pretty flowers from spring right through to the end of sum-mer. They do not need much care and are very resistant to draught. Some sources say that Dipladenia con-tains a toxic irritant which should not be touched or ingested.

DIPLADENIA SANDERI ROSEA WHITE

Climbing perennials with a tropical feel. In UK they are best planted in a conserva-tory.

Ophiopogon

OPHIOPOGON

JABURAN An evergreen, tufted perennial with

dark green, strap-shaped leaves. In

late summer it produces tall stems

with white, bell-shaped flowers that

later turn into oblong, voilet-blue

fruit.

This is a genus of about 50 spe-

cies of evergreen, rhizomatous

or tufted perennials from shady

scrub or woodland in East Asia,

especially China and Japan.

They are grown mainly for their

dense tufts of grass-like leaves.

They bear racemes of small, six-

tepalled semi-spherical to bell-

shaped, pinkish white, lilac or

white flowers on leafless stems in

late summer followed by glossy

round fruits. Semi-hardy.

OPHIOPOGON

JAPONICUS GREEN

MONDO GRASS A rhizomatous clump-forming type to

15-20cm (6-8 inches) tall with lush-

looking grass-like green leaves. Slow

to establish as a groundcover so plant

at a high density.

OPHIOPOGON

JAPONICUS KYOTO

DWARF Forms a tight carpet of deep green no

more than 10cm high. It spreads

slowly and can tolerate a wide range

of soils. It can be grown in full sun or

shade. Excellent around paving stones,

as a border or even a groundcover.

OPHIOPOGON JABURAN

VITTATUS This most attractive, compact,

grassy-looking perennial forms arching clumps of

neat, cream and green striped foliage. Because it is

not reliably hardy, it is best grown on its own in a

container and makes a superb patio plant that adds

foliage interest to a group of perennials or shrubs

grown for all-year-round effect. In mild areas, it can

live outside permanently and looks good grown with

grasses and foliage plants or in an evergreen border.

It is also known as ‘Variegatus’.

followed by round, fleshy, dark blue-

black fruit 3-5mm (about ¼in) across.

Leaves are almost black and looks

both unusual and effective when

planted in gravel-covered soil or inter-

planted with bulbs. It also looks good

with ferns in shade or silvery plants in

full sun.

Pennisetum and Imperata

Pennisetum can be annual or perennial, evergreen or de-ciduous grasses, clump-forming or spreading in habit, with linear leaves and narrow flowering panicles with con-spicuous bristles.

PENNISETUM SETACEUM RUBRUM Upright, arching, tender perennial produces mounds of narrow burgundy-red foliage and purple plumes to 1 foot long. It is invaluable for containers and stunning, annual foliage col-our in a border. It rarely sets seed. Drought tolerant but must be over-wintered in frost-free environment.

IMPERATA CYLINDRICA RED BARON (syn. Cylindrica Rubra) Blood-red spikes that fade to bright green at the base and become transluscent with age make this grass a spectacular addition to the perennial border. It takes a while to strut its stuff, but in late summer, it shines like a jewel before it dies back. Imper-ata Red Baron is particularly effective planted with other grasses, or shown off in a con-tainer. Fairly hardy, although protect from hard frosts.

Philodendron

PHILODENDRON

HOPE Hope is very fast to reach its

mature size and has an abun-

dance of beautiful glossy

leaves. A very bushy variety

that is suitable for use in the

garden. Hope makes an ele-

gant display in a pot, or mass

plant in gardens for a lush

tropical effect. In cooler cli-

mates, use on patios or in sun-

PHILODENDRON

HYBRID MOONLIGHT Lovely tight clusters of bright green lance-

like foliage. Hybrid, low growing, clumping

tender perennial shrub, this philodendron is

‘self heading’, which means that it does not climb or sprawl like a vine. The leaves are

broadly oval or truly lance-shaped, emerging a light yellow or bright chartreuse. They

slowly mature to a deeper yellow-green, and oldest leaves on the lowest part of the plant

are a duller mid-green. Flowers can arise during the warm months at anytime, being a

greenish-yellow, cloak-like wrapping spathe around a white, finger-like spadix.

Grow in well-draining, moist, acidy, fertile soils in partial shade. Too much light and the

leaves are whitish-yellow or simply brown. Too low humidity or soil moisture can cause

leaf browning, too, but also note that philodendrons do not like soggy or cold soils. Brings

a cheerful brightness to shady nooks under large trees, building courtyards or containers in

warm, frost-free regions, but is an excellent houseplant in bright, warm rooms.

All parts of philodendron leaves and stems are poisonous, and the juices can cause skin

irritation in some people.

Spathiphyllum

SPATHIPHYLLUM SUNSHINE DREAM Spathiphyllum is a genus of about 40 species of monocotyledonous flowering plants in the

family Araceae, native to tropical regions of the Americas and southeastern Asia. Certain

species of Spathiphyllum are commonly known as Spath or Peace Lilies.

They are evergreen herbaceous perennial plants with large leaves 12–65 cm long and 3–

25 cm broad. The flowers are produced in a spadix, surrounded by a 10–30 cm long, white,

yellowish, or greenish spathe. The plant does not need large amounts of light or water to

survive.

Several species are popular indoor houseplants. Spathiphyllum cleans indoor air of many

environmental contaminants, including benzene, formaldehyde, and other pollutants. It

cleans best at one plant per 10m. It lives best in shade and needs little sunlight to thrive. It

is watered approximately once a week. The soil is best left moist but only needs watering if

the soil is dry.

Stipa

STIPA ARUNDINACEA

Forming a fountain-like clump of slender evergreen foliage, that takes on red, orange and

yellow tones during the colder months of the year, this handsome grass also produces airy

flowerheads, which appear in late summer. Tease out dead foliage in spring by gently run-

ning your fingers through it as if it were hair. It may self-seed, but simply pull out seedlings

when you see them.

STIPA GIGANTEA Arching stems of glistening, golden, oat-like

flower heads above clumps of slender, grey-

green leaves. Looks stunning under-planted with

the rich purple flowerheads of Allium hollandi-

cum ‘Purple Sensation’. When planting always

wear stout gardening gloves to protect against

the sharp edges of the basal leaves. Wearing

gloves, comb through the plant in early spring

to remove dead foliage.

STIPA TENUISSIMA Wonderful, wispy, pale yellow-green

leaves topped with fluffy plumes of silver-

green flowers, maturing to blonde-buff.

Ideal for a sunny gravel garden, large con-

tainer or new perennial border. Cut

back in early spring before the new foli-

age appears.

Syngonium

SYNGONIUM

PODOPHYLLUM PIXIE

Syngonium is a genus of

about 36 species of flowering

plants in the family Araceæ,

native to tropical rain for-

ests in Central and South

America. They are

woody vines growing to

heights of 10–20 m or more

in trees. They have

leaves that change shape ac-

cording to the plant’s stage of

growth, and adult leaf forms

are often much more lobed

than the juvenile forms usu-

ally seen on small house

plants. Syngonium species are

often grown as house plants,

usually only in the juvenile

foliage stages. For successful

growth, a winter mini-

mum temperature 16°C to

18°C must be maintained,

rising to 20°C to 30°C during

the growing season. They

require high humidity, includ-

ing misting the leaves regu-

larly, and good light, but not

direct sunlight; they will tol-

erate low light levels. Water

freely from spring to autumn,

sparingly in winter. Feed

regularly in spring and sum-

mer. If juvenile foliage is pre-

ferred, cut off all the climb-

ing stems that develop — the

plant will remain bushy,

Yucca

YUCCA ELEPHANTIPES

Yucca gigantea (syn. Yucca elephanti-

pes, Yucca guatemalensis), is the tallest of

the Yucca species. Common names for

this species include spineless yucca, soft-

tip yucca, blue-stem yucca, giant yucca

and itabo. It is native to Belize, Costa

Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras

and Mexico. Its flower, the izote, is the

national flower of El Salvador. The spe-

cies can be grown in a variety of soils and

is drought-tolerant. Young plants are

occasionally used as houseplants. Yucca

gigantea may be subject to a number of

pests including scale, Yucca moth borers,

and black weevils. Plants are subject to

root rot if overwatered. Leaf spot may

affect the appearance of the leaves, but it

does not affect the health of the plant.

Propagation is by suckers, cuttings or

seed.

YUCCA FLACIDA BLUE

SENTRY The striking glaucous blue-grey foliage of

Yucca ‘Blue Sentry’ will make a handsome

statement in the garden or in a pot. The

sturdy, upright foliage makes this new

form well suited to under plantings in a

garden situation. It can also make an ele-

gant feature plant in a decorative con-

tainer.

At maturity ‘Blue Sentry’ will reach an

approximate height of 1.2 x 1.5m wide.

Yucca can be evergreen per-

ennials, shrubs or trees, with

dense or loose rosettes of

stiff, sword-shaped leaves and

tall panicles of bell-shaped

flowers
