The fiancee of the New York doctor who has been diagnosed with the Ebola virus has returned home after a brief quar-antine.

Morgan Dixon, who shares a Harlem apart-ment with Dr. Craig Spencer, was placed in an isolation unit at Bellevue Hospital on

Thursday night and on Saturday was released to her home, where she’ll remain in quarantine until Nov. 14.

Dixon, a development associate at Brooklyn’s Hope Program, which helps homeless individu-als find employment, has not shown any signs of the virus. METRO

De Blasio calls Ebola doctor Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Sunday that he spoke with Dr. Craig Spencer on the phone and called him “a hero.”

Spencer contracted Ebola after helping treat patients in West Africa. He is quarantined at Bel-levue Hospital and is in serious but stable condi-tion, according to Dr. Ram Raju.

The mayor said

Spencer sounded ener-getic and that he was an “incredibly noble human being.” METRO

Protocols for handling Ebola cases is clarifi ed

During a Sunday night press conference, Gov. An-drew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio and health officials discussed new travel proto-cols for people returning to the U.S. from West Africa.

“This is a war on a virus in West Africa,” Cuomo said, adding that New York-ers are balancing aid to Af-rica, protecting the health of New Yorkers and con-fronting fears of the virus.

Cuomo said health care workers who were exposed to Ebola patients will be asked to remain in their homes for a 21-day quar-antine, during which their temperature and condition will be checked two times a day by visiting health care workers. Potential patients will be transported to a hospital if symptoms oc-cur, Cuomo said.

Cuomo called New York’s policy perhaps the safest in the country, and said he didn’t anticipate patients violating a home quarantine.

Health care workers in West Africa who have not had contact with Ebola pa-tients will be asked to stay home from work for three weeks, and Cuomo said if employers refuse to pay, the state will step in.

procedures.

Back and forth

Gov. Cuomo said that his

personal preference is to

err on the side of caution in

terms of protocols for dealing

with Ebola.

• People who have had exposure to Ebola patients

are being asked to stay at their homes in a self-quarantine during the period.

• They will be visited twice a day by health care profes-sionals.

Cuomo and de Blasio stressed Ebola is not air-borne or easily contracted.

De Blasio said he met with health care workers at Bellevue on Sunday who have been “emotionally” and “personally affected” by “people reacting nega-tively” to them treating Ebola patients.

“We want to see all our medical personnel who are part of this fight treated with respect, dignity and support,” de Blasio said.

On Sunday, the White House also voiced concern to Gov. Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie about the impact of quar-antine orders on health care workers returning from West Africa, a senior administration official said.

Gov. Cuomo and Gov. Christie made the deci-sions on Oct. 24 after Dr. Craig Spencer came back to NYC infected.

“We have let the gover-nors of New York, New Jer-sey and others states know that we have concerns with the unintended con-sequences of policies not grounded in science may have on efforts to combat Ebola at its source in West Africa,” the Obama admin-istration official said in a statement.

The White House will consult further with states as the guidelines are devel-oped, the official said.

Vintage trains mark MTA’s birthdy

Nostalgic subway rid-ers were given a treat Sunday as the MTA celebrated the 110th anniversary of the NYC subway with retro rides around the city.

The MTA commem-orated the milestone by running vintage trains along the Broad-way 1/2/3 line between 96th St. and Times Sq-42nd St. The trains, including a low-voltage car and an intricately-designed “Train Of Many Colors.”

More trips are scheduled on the trains today between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. METRO

Exploring ‘New York’s Underground Art Museum’

If you’ve noticed more art-work in the New York City subway in recent years, you’re not imagining it.

The MTA’s has 250 per-manent artworks in the subway, and 100 of those have been added over the past eight years, said San-dra Bloodworth, director of MTA Arts & Design.

Bloodworth has co-authored a book with Wil-liam Ayres on the subway’s public art system. “New York’s Underground Art Museum” is set to be pub-lished on Tuesday.

Bloodworth, who joined the MTA’s “Arts for Transit” in 1988, said the arts pro-gram was created when the MTA was “on the brink

of collapse” in the 1980s, and “everything,” includ-ing signals and train cars, needed improvements.

“The projects started off relatively small but had a huge impact,” Bloodworth said. Early installations included porcelain tiles by Milton Glaser at the As-tor Street station, which

Bloodworth said is inspired by the station’s historic ter-racotta mosaics.

She said the art pro-gram has been “popular” from day one, solidified in the 1990s and gaining mo-mentum ever since.

Fulton Center, expected to open later this month, will integrate artwork into

the architecture, Blood-worth said, in the form of reflective panels that open the station to natural light.

Planning art into a sta-tion’s design is no coinci-dence. Bloodworth said when a station is being rebuilt, the arts program receives about 1 percent of the finished budget.

And, even if commut-ers aren’t even actively viewing the underground artwork, Bloodworth said passersby might reap the benefits as well.

“I think people experi-ence public art in a vari-ety of ways, some [pieces] speak to them, some don’t speak to them,” Blood-worth said.

“New York’s Under-ground Art Museum” is published by Monacelli Press.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton is calling Thurs-day’s hatchet attack on two police officers on pa-trol in Jamaica an act of terror.

Zale Thompson, 32, was shot and killed by police af-ter he hit the officers with an 18-inch metal hatchet.

Officer Kenneth Healey, 25, was struck in the back of the head and remains

hospitalized with a skull fracture in critical but sta-ble condition.

During a Friday press conference, Bratton and other police officials said they believe Thompson’s attack on the officers, who were posing for a photog-rapher, was premeditated, and that he acted alone.

An investigation has found Thompson was dis-

charged from the U.S. Navy and convicted of domestic assault in California. He re-cently visited websites as-sociated with terror groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda.

Police also said Thomp-son had viewed videos of beheadings.

“This is something he has been thinking about for some time, and think-ing about with more inten-

sity in recent days,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner John Miller said.

Metro previously re-ported the four officers in-volved in the incident had graduated from the police academy earlier this year.

Another officer was hit in the arm with a hatchet, and a bystander was hit in the back from a stray po-lice bullet. METRO

If you are living by the old money paradigm, your financial future is in serious jeopardy. Our country is still feeling the ripple effect from the 2008 financial crash. And, I believe another one is on the horizon.

Financial education is the key to financial freedom. Why? Because In today’s economy, knowledge is the new money. Your mind is the most powerful financial asset you have.

How to create new streams of cash flow 5 “unfair advantages” you can use in today’s economy Ways to find hidden investment opportunities And much more!

Time is running out. Don’t miss this golden opportunity. The workshop is completely FREE and you can bring a guest. When you invest in your financial education you are investing in your future.

The rules have changed. Sadly, most people still operate under the old money paradigm: go to school; get a job; work hard; save; invest in a 401k, etc. How’s that working out for you? For most people, it’s NOT!

If you cling to the old money paradigm, you will have to work harder and harder. Investors get money to work for them, instead of constantly working for money. The poor and middle class buy liabilities they mistake for assets. Investors acquire assets.

About 100 police, fire-fighters and other emer-gency workers held a disaster-response drill in downtown Toronto’s de-serted financial district on Sunday following a week that saw two sol-diers killed on Canadian soil.

Toronto emergency responders donning oxy-gen tanks and yellow full-body hazardous material suits shortly after dawn, set up decontamination tents and practiced how they would respond in an office tower that had re-ceived a suspicious pack-age.

The drill had long been planned and was not a re-action to the twin attacks that police said had been carried out by men they described as home-grown radicals, officials said.

Some acknowledged that it took on a more ur-gent tone in the wake of those incidents.

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said recent “lone wolf” terrorism attacks show that propaganda from groups like Islamic State are inspiring attacks on U.S. soil.

“One of the problems is that the Internet as well as certain specific

Muslim extremists are really firing up this lone wolf phenomenon.

“These attacks and the multiplicity of attacks in 2014 show that their propaganda is having some effect,” the California Democrat said on CNN’s “State of the Union” television program. REUTERS

Get a mouth of gold with “grillz.” / ROOPA VASUDEVAN

Gold “grillz” are the mouthpiece for some of the music industry’s big-gest rappers. Now, New York-based artist Roopa Vasudevan uses algorithms generated from songs by the likes of Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G. and Rick Ross to create the unique mouth accessories via 3-D printer. The peaks and troughs of the “grillz” are determined by tropes such as “poverty” and “wealth” that appear in a track. The 30-year-old explains why a grill made of “Been Around The World” by Puff Daddy feating The Notorious B.I.G. and Mas is mostly flat with the exception of a couple of spikes, “because all Daddy does during the song is rap about how rich he is.” What is the main point of your creation? All I want to do is make people look at the juxtaposition of poverty and wealth in hip-hop in a new way. I don’t necessarily want to change anyone’s mind about the music, especially because I personally love the tracks that I used for the project. But the idea is to represent something visually that someone might not have considered before.

How did you create them?Basically, I’m taking rap lyrics and going through them with a program I wrote, looking for key words or phrases that either reference poverty or wealth in the rap lexicon. If the program finds a word that references poverty, it then looks around it for words referencing wealth, and vice versa. It then assigns a score or points that are

generated by how close opposite words are to each other. The scores that are generated across the whole song are then translated into a topography, which was then extruded into 3-D on the front of the “grillz.”

What melodies did you use to create them?I ran the programs on a lot of different songs, but since I only was able to print five for the first showing, I stuck with the songs with the most interesting landscapes. Those were “Juicy” (The Notorious B.I.G.), “Hard Knock Life” (Jay-Z), “Hustlin’” (Rick Ross), “Make It Rain” (Fat Joe ft. Lil’ Wayne) and “Been Around The World” (Puff Daddy, Mase and The Notorious B.I.G.). DMITRY BELYAEV, METRO WORLD NEWS

Question

Do any rappers own your product?

I haven’t gotten in contact with any of them as yet, but it would defi nitely be a high point in my artistic career if they wanted one.

Is a ‘gap year’ aft er high school for you? Alternative

education.

Taking a break

before college

is increasingly

popular.

It’s a familiar script that millions of students follow each year: Graduate high school and then immedi-ately start college.

But more and more students are embracing the “gap year” — a year of volunteering and working before heading to campus.

“In the beginning of senior year I was really stressed out with home-work and extracurricular activities and everything that goes along with it in high school,” says Eliza-beth Campbell, a 19-year-old from Little Rock, Ar-

kansas. “And I decided, ‘Hey, maybe I want to take some time off and travel and learn another lan-guage.’”

Campbell decided to defer her admission to Furman University for a year and moved to Seville, Spain, as part of a gap year program with the Council on International Educa-

tional Exchange and spent a year learning Spanish and tutoring children.

In many ways, Camp-bell’s story is typical of stu-dents who take gap years, says Jay Bacrania, the CEO of Signet Education in Cambridge, Massachu-setts. Bacrania and his col-league Sheila Akbar often help plan gap years for the

students they work with, which they stress isn’t a yearlong vacation.

“They are going to be challenged,” he says, add-ing that planning is key. “It’s not really a way to dis-guise a year off.”

The big questions

Things to considerStudents weighing whether to take a gap year should ask themselves these questions:

What do you want to accomplish? “Think about what your goals are,” advises Bacrania. “Is there a project you want to work on?” He suggests that high school seniors talk with their families or other mentors about things they’d like to achieve dur-ing the year and to come up with a realistic plan reach those goals.

Are you taking time off for the right reasons? Sometimes students who didn’t get into their dream college think that a gap year can help bolster their college applications and get them to the next level. “We don’t encourage that,” says Bacrania, noting that some students fl irt with the idea of the gap year quite late into their senior years when they feel like they aren’t getting

into the schools they want. Both Akbar and Bacrania say they usually suggest that students complete the college application process and defer admis-sion for a year.

How much structure do you need? Some students, like Campbell, want to focus on developing a skill or learning a language during their gap years. Akbar recalls working on a plan for a student who was interested in explor-ing careers in fashion. “We researched summer programs and said, ‘These are the pros and these are the cons.’”

Can you build in time for refl ection? The gap year isn’t just about cram-ming your resume full of volunteer projects or fi lling your passport with stamps. Can you write a paper or a blog about what you’ve learned? “You want the student to refl ect on their experience and fi nd ways to share that experience with others,” says Bacrania.

With the average high school student applying to five or six schools, application and test score fees start to add up. We’ve compiled some ways students and parents can save some money during a stressful and expensive time of year.

Applying online can be less expensive.Paper applications are time-consuming for all involved: Students have to organize and mail every-thing, and colleges have to employ staff members to manually enter all of the data into their systems.

That’s why many colleges don’t charge for online applications — or they charge less. (And some don’t have application fees at all, says the Huffington Post, naming Smith Col-lege, Colby College and Carleton College as three examples.)

Ask about fee waivers.Don’t be afraid to ask if fee waivers or reductions

are available. Admissions officers are used to being asked, and having your fee waived won’t be held against you when decision time comes around.

out of sending your score in order to save on the processing fee. Of course, some students feel that their SAT scores enhance their applications, and therefore want to include them. Check with your guidance counselor about the best course of action.

Stress . A new form of therapy for students College counseling cen-ters are adapting to the digital age.

At the University of Florida, anxious students can participate in a program called Therapist Assisted Online. After meeting with a coun-selor in person, students will be enrolled in what

the university describes as a “seven-week, interactive, Web-based program.” Students who enroll will watch videos and participate in a series of exercises while also video conferencing with a counselor for 10-15 minutes a week. LAKSHMI GANDHI

It’s Taylor Swift Album Release Day, y’all! Oh wait, maybe forget the “y’all,” as she’s not really a country artist anymore. She left that back in Nash-ville and instead kicks off her album, “1989,” with a track you might have heard already — since Swift released it last week in advance of the album — called “Welcome to New York.” So, you know, welcome! Why is she being so “willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!” to everyone about a city she’s only been living in for a tiny bit? Because she’s trying to speak her truth! “I never thought I’d live in New York, because

But that’s just the song. The video for it, a live performance in a theater space, features Cantor backed by a band, a string quartet, the West

1 Which fl ick did Pitt think was the pits?

OK, here’s a fun game. In the latest issue of De-tails magazine, Brad Pitt is featured in a fancy photo series shot by Mark Seliger, and instead of a full accompanying interview, the magazine dapples the images with some interesting quotes by Pitt. One of them is especially provocative: “I was once talked into a fi lm for ‘career maintenance.’ I have not made that mistake since,” Pitt says. Which begs the ques-tion, which fi lm is he talking about?

While Pitt has generally been pretty good at picking projects, he’s gotten really careful since shacking up with Angelina Jolie. But that also coincides nicely with his production company, Plan B, getting more clout. So I’m putting my money on 2004’s laughable “Troy,” an uncharacteristically Big Hollywood choice for Pitt — and one that he looks palpably uncomfortable in. There’s also a slight possibility he’s talking about “The Mexican,” but that fi lm’s kind of adorable in its own scruff y way, and Pitt seemed to be having such a good time doing it that I doubt it. I’m still going with the terrible, terrible swords-and-sandals epic misfi re.

There’s that Spencer Tracy line: Know your lines and don’t run into the furniture. That’s a little too glib for me. When I talk about the kind of things I’m experiencing rather than interpreting, it’s a subtle thing, and sometimes people misunderstand me. It’s not a lack of will or in-terest or research or depth — it’s just a different way of acting. I’m not telling the audience anything. I’m pretending in a situation and things happen to me. And in my reactions and in my dealing with situa-tions, with me being in the guise of a character, that will speak to the audience. My concentration is trying to find the truth or the magic or interesting things in dealing with a situation.

Tracy was probably joking anyway. When I say it’s glib, I mean everyone uses that to mean straight-shooting ac-tors who just get up there and do it. But even with those guys, there’s some-thing special happening.

He also played a famous director in Abel Ferrara’s “Paso-lini.” And now there’s

Actor Sean Bean has died so many times it’s inspired memes, includ-ing the hashtag “#Dont-KillSeanBean.” Dafoe isn’t far behind. He’s died at least 12 times, including being crucifi ed in “The Last Temptation of Christ.”

Asked what draws him to roles that involve him croaking, Dafoe says, “It’s nice to have a good exit. Death is so dramatic. The subject doesn’t necessarily at-tract me, but it does say something about what kinds of characters I’m attracted to and what things happen in the

quences. It’s fun because it’s athletic and requires timing — a correct touch. It’s what I like about performing, which is that you have a strong action. I often refer to myself as a task-oriented actor. That’s very much where my training in theater comes from. You have a very clear sequence of movements. You have to learn the sequence. You get totally engaged and totally turned on.

Your character has known Reeves’ for a very long time. Did you two bother with a backstory?I don’t find backstory very useful. You can’t play backstory. It can guide research. But I don’t like that kind of stuff. I almost find it distracting, showy. I like to play what’s in the scenes, have stuff occur to me. I like to pretend, and when I’m pretending certain things come up. But backstory, no.

Brad Pitt got dirty for the masses in 2012’s “Killing Them Softly.” THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

‘Killing Them Softly’Netfl ix InstantThere ought to be a category on Netflix Instant called “Great Brad Pitt Movies Everyone Hated At First.” There are enough of them, including this grimy thriller, with Pitt as a greasy-haired enforcer trying to clean up the mess of a robbery. Too bleak for the mainstream, it was dissed by critics, who dwelled on its not-very-sub-tle use of Barack Obama’s election as backdrop and commentary.

And yet it’s peerlessly grizzled — as hopeless as the novel by George V. Higgins, pulp’s starkest poet. Best of all are the two scenes owned by James Gandolfini, playing a hedonistic assassin too far gone to even do his job. He storms in, downs martinis and pesters hookers, then exits as quickly as he came in. As in real life, he leaves a mark.

PEOPLE HATE TOO MANY OF PITT’S GREAT FILMS

‘Beware of Mr. Baker’Netfl ix InstantJack Bruce, one third of super trio Cream, passed away this weekend. Apart from blasting “Wheels of Fire” as loud as you can, one way of celebrating his work would be queuing up this documentary profi le of the band’s most volatile member: drum-mer and persistent rabid dog Ginger Baker. Though

found liv-ing poor on an African farm, the hel-lion hasn’t chilled; he begins the fi lm by bashing the director in the face with his cane. The fi lm then hops back to see him pissing off everyone he met — while creating great music, including helping to popularize Fela Kuti in the West.

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

Netfl ix InstantThere are scores of diamonds in the rough buried on Netfl ix Instant. But who are we kidding? We’ll all just watch this.

But some cities are los-ing this potentially trans-formative young popula-tion in droves. The study found that only 4 percent of Detroit’s population can be considered young col-lege graduates — a group that continues to shrink every year. The report notes that this doesn’t bode well for the future.

“The loss of talented young workers is a sign that a region’s economy is struggling,” the study’s au-thor Joe Cortright writes. “Places that attract talent are not only generally do-ing well, but are increas-ingly well-positioned to grow additional firms and jobs.”

New York, Washington and San Francisco have long acted as beacons for recent college graduates eager to start their adult lives. But a revealing new study by the thinktank City Observato-ry highlights some surpris-ing new cities recent grads are flocking to.

Appropriately titled “The Young and the Rest-less and the Nation’s Cit-ies,” the report found that about a million young grads move to a different state each year — and that many don’t settle down until they reach their mid-30s. According to ex-perts, the appeal of urban lifestyles to millennials is quite simple.

“They want something exciting, culturally fun, involving a lot of diversity — and their fathers’ subur-ban lifestyle doesn’t seem to be all that thrilling to many of them,” Harvard University economics pro-fessor Edward Glaeser told the New York Times.

So where are these young grads heading to?

In recent years, Denver has become a beacon for young people, with its population of recent grads nearly doubling since the year 2000. Other popular destinations include San Diego, Baltimore, Pitts-burgh, Indianapolis, Nash-

Technology. Some critics say this math app encourages cheating Anyone who took an algebra or geometry class during high school prob-ably remembers being told to always “show your work” on homework assignments and exams. But a controversial new app takes the hard work of “solving” out of the prob-lem solving equation.

The free new app PhotoMath allows students to simply take a photo of a math problem and then — using text-reading software — will solve the problem and show all of the work in the process. The app’s creators say it is geared toward students who may not have access to tutoring and to parents

26www.metro.usMonday, October 27, 2014 JOBS

Online retailer Zappos made news earlier this year when it announced it would be zapping job postings. That’s right, they’ve been nixed, and hopeful job seekers have to find another way in the door.

According to industry buzz, they want to get to know applicants rather than having them apply to the giant black hole known as the applicant tracking system. Prompt-ing job seekers to become “insiders,” their site includes ambassadors’ Twitter handles and Linke-dIn profiles for each team and essentially details ways that job seekers can connect to recruiters via social media and through referrals.

They’re on to some-thing. According to a study by the Federal Re-serve Bank of New York, referred candidates are twice as likely to get

HOW TO GET A JOB THROUGH A REFERRAL

Want to turn that frown upside down? Employers tend to smile at referrals. / PHOTODISC

interviews as non-referred candidates. Referred candidates also have a 40 percent better chance of getting hired than other applicants. Armed with this data, job seekers should rely on referrals for the highest rate of return on their time and energy investment in a job search. Here are a few tips on how to get started.

1Look at your social networks. For start-ers, search LinkedIn

for connections, ask for introductions and schedule informational interviews. But don’t just do this when you’re looking for a job and eager to move on — people can see through that. Networking is an ongoing process to forge strong connections and build new skills. It’s truly a journey.

2Conversations on the phone or better yet, in-person will

only be to your benefi t. An employee may not feel comfortable forward-ing your résumé if he or she met you two years ago at a conference and hasn’t heard from you since. However, if you had invited her out for coffee three months ago and fol-lowed up this week, you’re in a much better position to be referred.

3Let your true colors shine while getting to know each other.

Demonstrate passion for your current role and/or the path you want to pursue. Also, share a little something personal about yourself, whether you’re a season ticket holder for the Giants or a serious fan of “Scandal.” It’s fodder for conversation aside from serious job talk, and you never know when another connection can be made.

4Keep in mind thatrecruiting isn’t scientifi c. Technical

skills are important, but when two candidates are compared, from my experience working with countless hiring managers, the hiring decision always comes down to “Who do you like better?”

Your best shot getting in the door and staying there relies upon building a network of reliable refer-rers who you can count on to vouch for you.

How not to get richRe: ‘Those who oppose Sykes’ column are really just envious’ (Metro, Oct. 23) Well said, Mr. Falcon. Many don’t want to put in the eff ort to reach their goals, so they placate themselves by ripping on others as an outlet for their misery. Anyone spouting negativity is clearly jealous or doesn’t have the GONADS to achieve their goals as Mr. Sykes did. Also, Mr. Sykes wasn’t bragging, he was alluding that Lamborghi-nis AREN’T as fun as they seem — he was advising people to THINK TWICE! Hence, anyone whining is GRASPING FOR STRAWS. US should end tradeWe are going through this time to make our global exports more competitive with nations with a poorer standard of living. This is a notion that should be reserved to smaller nations. For we, one of the largest nations in the world and rich in resources, do not really need global exports to function. We have plenty of demand within our borders to keep ourselves with a supply of jobs and demand for our output. World trade has always been a negative factor in our economy. HENRY T. Jets-Bills game at: Metro.us/sports.

Same old story

Bargnani to miss

fi rst three games

Knicks fans have a reason to be frus-

trated with forward Andrea Bargnani before the season has even begun.

Head coach Derek Fisher said Thursday Bargnani will miss

the fi rst three games of the season due to a hamstring injury. He hasn’t played

since the preseason opener against

Boston on Oct. 8. The Knicks open Wednes-

day with Chicago.

The Michael Vick era may have begun in New York, as the veteran quarter-back replaced a benched Geno Smith late in the first quarter of the Jets’ 43-23 loss to the Bills.

Smith had three inter-ceptions on the Jets’ first four drives, leading to the earliest benching of his career.

Head coach Rex Ryan seemed at a loss after the game to explain Smith’s performance, but he made it clear he was un-clear who would start Week 9.

“I have no idea,” Ryan said. “We’ll look at that later.”

Ryan immediately confirmed Smith would start the following week when he was benched during a loss to San Diego in Week 5.

Vick finished 18-of-36 for 153 yards with an in-terception and two lost fumbles. But he did lead the Jets on all four of their scoring drives.

“I still hold myself to a high standard. I feel I can come in at any mo-ment and make some-thing happen,” Vick said. “Maybe that’s not the case, maybe that’s not re-alistic and that’s wishful thinking for myself. At least that’s my optimism, that’s what I believe in. With a full week of prac-tice, we’ll see, maybe at some point. But I came in, [and] did the best I could.”

Vick led the offense to 17 points on his first five drives to cut the Bills lead to 24-17 at halftime.

“I made the move to go to Mike. I think we responded,” Ryan said. “There was a lot good things we did with Mike in there and he did per-sonally. But we’ve got to take care of the football better.”

New face, new place

Harvin plays ‘really well’ in debut: Ryan

It was far from an ideal de-but, but the Jets still man-aged to get a taste Sunday of what Percy Harvin can bring to the off ense.

“I was very comfort-able. Throughout the week I was picking it up fairly well,” Harvin said. “I think my fi rst two days, I pretty much had all the formations down. The plays, I just kept going at them. They were starting

to come to me this week during practice.”

Harvin fi nished with 194 totals yards on off ense and special teams, includ-

ing a 35-yard return on the game’s opening kick.

He was used all over the fi eld, lining up in the slot and out wide, includ-

ing in the fi rst quarter when quarterback Geno Smith badly misfi red on a go route for an intercep-tion. And he was lined up in the backfi eld at times, including on a 7-yard gain in the second quarter on a pitch from quarterback Michael Vick.

Harvin admitted after the game he hadn’t played that much lined up wide since he was in high school. The Jets hinted all week they were going to utilize Harvin in a limited role. Instead, he was tar-geted nine times, second

highest on the team. The most time he missed came in the fi rst half when he was out during testing for a concussion. He returned before halftime, however.

“All things considered, I thought Percy really played well. That’s not an easy task,” head coach Rex Ryan said. “We were going to play him more than he let on. It was a challenge to a guy to come into a new team, but I thought he did a great job. This guy is obviously a big-time play-maker. I’m happy he’s on our team.” KRISTIAN DYER

What went wrong

1Pick playGeno Smith started the

game 2-of-8 for fi ve yards, which isn’t surprising for a quarterback who has one of the lower completion percentages in the league. But the three interceptions were astoundingly bad even by Smith’s less-than-lofty standards. The decision to bench him in favor of Michael Vick before he could get a fi fth series is something that should carry over into next week.

2Franchise cornerstoneFirst-round pick Sammy

Watkins didn’t get a ton of balls thrown his way but he made the most of his limited opportunities. He fi nished with three receptions for 157 yards and a touchdown.

3Not on the defenseGiven a short fi eld to play

with, the performance of the defense might be one of the best of the year. They bent but didn’t break as much as they could have.

29SPORTS

NFL fans looking for a full day of football began at 9:30 a.m. on the East Coast and got an excit-ing game at Wembley Stadium to kick off over 14 hours of football.

Patriots 51, Bears 23The Patriots posted four TDs in the second quarter alone Sunday as they brutalized the Bears at Gillette Stadium. Tom Brady was superb, completing 30-of-35 passes for 354 yards and five touchdowns. Three of Brady’s touchdown passes were caught by Rob Gronkowski, who had a monster afternoon with nine catches for 149 yards in the 51-23 win.

Lions 22, Falcons 21The Lions offense showed up late to the game with the earliest start in NFL history, but Matthew Stafford and Co. thrived in the second half as De-

troit (6-2) rallied hard to beat Atlanta at Wembley Stadium in London. The Falcons (2-6) were lead-ing 21-0 at halftime but their offense struggled to find any rhythm in the second half.

Seahawks 13, Panthers 9Russell Wilson com-pleted a 23-yard touch-down pass to Luke Willson with 47 seconds remaining to get Seattle (4-3) back into the win column. Carolina (3-4) did not score a touch-down against the Legion of Boom.

Bengals 27, Ravens 24Cincy QB Andy Dalton made up for a late fumble and interception by scoring the winning touchdown, a one-yard touchdown plunge with 57 seconds remaining, and the Bengals righted the ship. Cincy also beat the Ravens in Week 1.

Vikings 19, Bucs 13Vikings rookie linebacker Anthony Barr had a walk-off forced fumble and touchdown return on the first play of overtime as Minnesota (3-5) edged the Bucs (1-6) in Tampa Bay. Fellow Minnesota rookie, Teddy Bridgewater, was

efficient at quarterback, throwing for one touch-down and zero intercep-tions.

Dolphins 27, Jaguars 13Jacksonville’s Blake Bortles looked like the rookie he is as both of his interceptions went the other way for touchdowns in Miami’s win. Louis Delman had an 81-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter and Brent Grimes’ 22-yard return

occurred early in the third quarter.

Chiefs 34, Rams 7The Chiefs (4-3) were the kings of Missouri Sunday as they scored 34 unanswered points to trounce the Rams (2-5). Jamaal Charles ran for a pair of touchdowns and Knile Davis had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Kansas City defense sacked St. Louis quarterback Austin Davis seven times.

Texans 30, Titans 16Arian Foster has been doing his best DeMarco Murray impression lately as the Texans (4-4) run-ning back ran for over 100 yards for the fourth straight game. Foster found the end zone three times against Tennes-see (2-6) Sunday, twice via the run and once via reception.

Afternoon games

• Cardinals 24, Eagles 20

Nick Foles’ pass into the back corner of the end zone couldn’t quite be hauled in at the fi nal whistle as the Eagles lost for just the second time.

• Steelers 51, Colts 34

Ben Roethlisberger was the only QB with a bigger game than Brady on Sunday in the league’s highest-scor-ing contest this season. Roethlisberger fi nished with 522 passing yards and six touchdowns.

• Browns 23, Raiders 13

The Browns bounced back from an ugly loss at Jacksonville and avoided becoming the fi rst team to ever lose back-to-back against rookie QBs with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
