EXETER CANOE LOOP

A TRIP IN OPEN BOATS

26th April Meet Market Yard: 8am Cost £12 Organiser: Stu Miles

This is to be a canoe trip so get your kneeling pads out!

We get on at Exeter Quay and paddle downstream on the Exe to Countess weir via Salmon Pool, and then back on the Exeter Ship Canal.

This is a first for us and so we can't really tell you what it is going to be like except that it will be flat with two weirs in. But we will be in open boats and so we can take barbeque, champers on ice, and the odd canapé. Only joking - no champers or canapés. But Bex says that there is a lovely café on the canal we can stop at and have a cup of tea!

A distance of about 7 miles and a small portage between the river and the canal.

LAST WINTTER CLUB SESSION

AT THE CLUBHOUSE

11th April

2– 4 pm EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Help needed

5th April, 10am –2pm

Frome Independent Market is promoting all the sporting activities available in Frome.

So we will man a stall in the general market area and we will also be demoing some slalom on the river that morning for people to watch. While all this is happening we will also have the clubhouse open for people to come and take a look. But we are not doing any taster sessions—too cold.

We need people to man the stall in the market and direct people to the clubhouse if they want more infor-mation and we need people to get on the water and train with John’s slalom groups.

the best run counts.

A team comprises any three boats. And they don’t have to be slalom boats. Choose the boat you like paddling!

TREASURE HUNT (REPLACING THE EASTER EGG HUNT!)

3rd May Meet Market Yard: 10am

Our Easter Egg Hunt for the last two years has had to be cancelled because of the weather, so this is an attempt to beat the weather. Let’s hope it works!

In canoes we shall be searching for clues along the banks of the River Frome near the Clubhouse.

What treasure will we find? Probably the edible variety!

This is an event that everyone can join in. So Mums and Dads you are welcome too!

A Wednesday session rule: If the water is above the jetty, no

one gets on the water without permission from Rich or John.

Please arrive at the clubhouse 15 minutes before your session starts. This will give you time to check in and get kitted up.

Kit - we provide all the specialist canoeing kit that you will need but please bring a change of clothes to wear on the water and a towel for the shower after your session. And until it warms up, please have fleecy tops or thermals. You also need some old trainers or wetsuit shoes. (Not crocks) The club does sell wetsuit shoes (£5) and thermals (£16 young people). There will be no shoes to borrow from the club this year.

More about Wednesdays

COME TO THE CLUBHOUSE ABOUT 15 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR GROUP IS DUE TO GET ON THE WATER.

What do I do?

On the door, pay and choose the group you are going to join. You get a coloured bib. Get changed in the changing rooms and then go and collect all the kit you

need. Tracey will help you if you are not sure what to choose. Put the bib on top of your buoyancy aid. This helps the instructor for your

group to find you. Go and wait in the car park with the rest of your group. When your instructor is ready, carry your boat carefully down to the jetty

and get in. Remember the steps are steep and sometimes slippery so take great care. Get someone to help with your boat so that you share the load. At the end of your session, put all your kit away.

What do I need to bring?

£2.50 entry fee or PaddlePass A change of clothes for the water. You will need warm clothes for the first

few weeks. Some old trainers or wetsuit shoes are essential as we don’t have any spare wet suit shoes at the clubhouse now. A towel to dry your-self after your shower. If you have a wet suit, bring that. Bring any other canoeing kit that you may have.

Remember you can borrow kayaks, paddles, spray decks, buoyancy aids etc., from the club.

At the end of my session

Bring your boat and paddle back up from the river. Put your bib in the box by the Store door. Rinse your wetsuit in the showers PUT AWAY ALL THE KIT THAT YOU HAVE USED. We all have to look after

our kit, and things won’t dry if left lying on the floor. Not only that, we will be knee deep in kit after the second week! (The mind boggles!)

News from the Committee - the PaddlePass

WE WANT YOU TO PADDLE MORE! We want to give members more opportunities to paddle and so we are opening the club up on more evenings for everyone to use. In addition we are introducing the PaddlePass scheme. It provides a slightly different way of paying for sessions. From now onwards you can buy a paddling season ticket for the summer months, or you can buy a month-by-month Pass or indeed, multiples-of-months-Pass. Once you have a PaddlePass you can paddle whenever the clubhouse is open during the summer (subject to conditions below). The clubhouse is to be open on Mondays: 6.30pm-8.30pm from 20th April till 14th September Tuesdays: while courses are running, 5th May till 14th July, 6.30 to 9pm Wednesdays: normal club session from 22nd April till 16th September Paddlepass costs £50 for April to September £10 per month The PaddlePass gives a more flexible way of paying. You can of course continue to pay session by session (£2.50) or you can buy up to 6 sessions using the Up-front Card system. So there should be a way which suits everyone! Here are the conditions Under 16s must join a coached group (ie Monday slalom and

Wednesday) 16+ can paddle in any of the three evenings provided they go in a

group of 3 and they are at Two Star competency. (Check with Rich if you are unsure.)

Water conditions may affect who gets on. The Duty Coach has the final say.

Bits and Pieces

YOUNG PEOPLE

Jack and Gareth are our YOUTH REPS for 2015. They are there to answer any of your questions and they will be pleased to listen to your views. Catch them on a club night - Jack leads the Polo and Gareth will be hovering around or helping with the Green group.

Support the tuck shop on Wednesday evenings and help the club to raise money for club kit. Brenda has offered to lead this one and the committee jumped at her kind offer! So after your paddling session, why don’t you replace those vital calories by a small purchase from the TUCK SHOP?

Tuck shop is coming to Club sessions!

One mangled van A Range Rover drove into Gareth as he was driving home after the Frome trip. It was quite dramatic watching the fire teams dismantle his van: doors were cut off and steering wheel was removed. Gareth’s side of the van took the brunt of the collision which left George unscathed, thankfully. We send out best wished to Gareth for a speedy recovery. Take it easy now Gareth and come back to the club when you can.
