SEASON REVIEWSEASON REVIEW

2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW

One year after recording their fi rst winning record since the 2000-01 season the Bears look to build on a successful 2014-15 year.

Coast Guard returns fourteen wrestlers, including four seniors and seven juniors, from a team that went 13-6, beat Merchant Marine for the fi rst time since the 2007 season, and sent two wrestlers to the NCAA National Championships.

“We have a strong nucleus of returning guys that all played a part in last year success. The graduating seniors will be missed as they possessed strong leadership, wrestling ability, and commitment to working hard. We will look for new guys this year to step up and fi ll the shoes Nate Giorgio, Mike Giorgio, Steve Kidwell, Ben Greene, and Mark Howard who were lost to graduation.

Returners include senior Mike Shermot (174) who placed second in the 174 pounds division at the NCAA Northeast Wrestling Regional qualifying him for the National Championships. Shermot was 21-6 wrestling at 174 last season and was named All-New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) second team and Pilgrim League honorable mention. He was also third at the All-Academy Championships.

Shermot will be joined by fellow seniors Kevin Painten (Hwt.), Holden Takahashi (157), and Marc Wagner (184) to provide the necessary leadership to continue the rise of the wrestling program.

Other key returners for Coast Guard are Wagner, junior Mike Palomba (157), and sophomore Chris Sullivan. The three of them were named second team All-Pilgrim and NEWA honorable mention. Junior Phil Azzari (197) was also named second team All-Pilgrim last season.

“The culture is changing but it is still a work in progress,” commented Bratland. “However, from what I have seen so far are guys who are committed to wrestling, who are not afraid to work hard, and they want to be champions on and off the wrestling mat.”

The Bears also bring in a strong freshman class to add to an experienced lineup. The class is highlighted by middleweight wrestlers including Illinois native Nick Remke (157), followed by

Christian Gosch (149), Nick Jabs (157), Colin Johnson (149), Adam Wilhelm (141), and Nick Wittrock (141).

Coast Guard has a full slate of meets this season including an early season test from Roger Williams who is ranked number 12 in the Division III Preseason Coaches Poll. Last season the Bears had a tight battle with the Hawks as they fell by a score of 23-18.

“I hope for the same type of environment and atmosphere that we had last year,” said Bratland. “I think it was good for both programs to go out and battle hard early in the season.”

It will also be a fi rst in Coast Guard wrestling history as the Bears will travel out to Fort Wayne, Indiana in early January to take part in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals. They are one of 24 Division III teams in the nation to be invited to take part in the Duals. 13 of the top 15 teams in the Division III Preseason Coaches Poll will be attending.

“The Nationals Duals will be a great opportunity to expose our wrestlers to the top teams in the country,” added Bratland. “It will be important for the team to see what the top teams are doing and how they compete, and I think they will learn a lot from that process. It is going to be a good test for us as a team, but we are excited for the opportunity.”

Coast Guard is also excited to welcome assistant coach J.R. Lewis. Lewis served as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater Wisconsin-La Crosse for the past two seasons where he coached fi ve All-Americans and one national fi nalist.

“I am really excited about having J.R. on board here at the Coast Guard Academy,” said Bratland. “Being a highly successful student-athlete and coach while at UW-Lacrosse, J.R. understands and values the work it takes to excel in both athletics and academics. His experience, passion, and work ethic will help develop all of our athletes and to continue the tremendous wrestling tradition here at the Coast Guard Academy.”

Bratland and the entire Coast Guard wrestling program continue to strive to build a high power program at not only the regional level, but also the national level. The Bears open their season on November 14th at the Roger Williams Invitational.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFIFTH YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fi fth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.

In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.

Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affi liate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.

Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

KEVIN BRATLANDHEAD COACH [email protected] SEASON

Kevin Bratland enters his second season as head coach of the Coast Guard wrestling program.

He had an outstanding fi rst season leading the Bears to a dual meet record of 13-6, their fi rst winning season in 14 years. Coast Guard also beat rival Merchant Marine for the fi rst time since 2007.

Bratland was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Coach of the Year as he sent a pair of wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championships and Nate Giorgio earned All-America honors for third time in his career with a fi fth place fi nish at 133 pounds. Giorgio won the Northeast Region Championship and fi nished 41-2 on the season.

Bratland was the head coach at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois for the past eight seasons. He led the Cardinals to a 73-47-1 dual-meet record and three College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships while also being named conference Coach of the Year three times. His teams fi nished in top 10 at the NCAA Division III Championships three times.

In his fi rst season in 2006-’07, Bratland led the Cardinals to a 10th-place fi nish at the NCAA Division III Championships, the highest fi nish in school history. Four wrestlers qualifi ed for nationals and two were All-Americans.

North Central sent three wrestlers to the 2008 Division III Championships, each of whom earned All-American honors in helping the Cardinals to a ninth-place fi nish.

In 2009, North Central had two individuals qualify for national-championship competition with both earning All-America honors. The Cardinals also set a school record with 15 dual-meet victories in the 2008-2009 campaign and achieved a national ranking as high as fourth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Four of his wrestlers qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships and two earned All-America honors in the 2009-2010 season as the team posted a 12-5-1 dual-meet record. During the 2010-2011 season, three individuals qualifi ed for the national championships with one earning All-America honors.

In 2012, two athletes earned All-America honors while 2013 saw one wrestler earn All-America status. Last year Bratland had two wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Bratland graduated from Wartburg in 2003 with a degree in fi tness management. He received his master’s degree in exercise science in 2004 from University of Northern Iowa. Bratland is also a certifi ed strength and conditioning specialist and attained his coaching certifi cation from Iowa Central Community College.

As a collegian, Bratland was a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III All-Academic Individual and two-time NCAA III All-American. In 2002, he fi nished third in the nation at 157 pounds and improved his placement to second as a senior in 2003. Bratland served as Wartburg’s co-captain as a junior and senior and was the team’s most valuable wrestler those same two years. He was a member of Wartburg’s 2003 national championship team.

Bratland began his wrestling career at Iowa State University in 1997 and was part of the top-ranked recruiting class in the nation along with four-time undefeated national champion and Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson and four-time All-American and national champion Joe Heskett. The Cyclones fi nished fourth at the NCAA Division I Championships that season, with four wrestlers earning All-America honors.
