2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT | 3

A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN OUR HISTORYMilwaukee has embraced the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music as a significant cultural institution for 117 years. Since the beginning, the Conservatory has embraced the power of music and adapted to the needs of the community. When there was demand for a jazz program, Tony King and Conservatory leadership created the Jazz Department, now known as the Jazz Institute. When the community needed a third-party provider of quality music programs, we formed Conservatory Connections, now serving nearly 9,000 students throughout southeast Wisconsin. When the community needed more convenient locations to take music lessons and classes, we opened locations in Bayside, then Brookfield, and then Wauwatosa.

The 2015-16 school year was pivotal for our organization on several fronts:· Our talented faculty successfully launched our general music curriculum known as Music Counts

which served a broad range of students in our area.

· Demand for Conservatory Connections grew by 31%, serving a total of 59 schools, senior centers, daycare centers, and community organizations. Our partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools increased dramatically with the new Fill in the Gaps Initiative, serving 20 schools within the district.

· After a 5-month strategic planning and research process in 2014-15, changes were made starting in the fall that streamlined our business model, making the organization more financially stable.

With a standards-based curriculum for general music programs, increased demand for our community programming, a streamlined business model that promises to be sustainable, in addition to the long-standing tradition of having high quality teaching artists, our future looks bright.

My predecessor, Gregory Ruffer, led the organization for nearly four years with creativity and excellence, departing in June. I am grateful for the continued leadership of Rachel Fritz, who served as Interim President until I began my tenure as President & CEO on November 1, 2016. It is an honor and a privilege to lead this organization further into the 21st Century. As we continue to adapt to the needs of the community and build upon the pivotal 2015-16 year, I am excited about the prospects of the future. Without question, the single most impressive driving force that I have seen is the power of music which happens every day at the Conservatory. And that happens because of the passion that each faculty, staff, board member, volunteer, and donor brings to our students and the community. Truly the power of music is alive at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Sincerely,

Eric Tillich, President & Chief Executive Officer

4 | 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT

OUR MISSIONThe mission of the Conservatory is to provide the finest musical education to the aspiring professional performer as well as to children and adults who desire cultural enrichment or musical self-fulfillment. We provide musical experiences to students from age four months through lifelong musician, to both amateur and professional abilities. We work to develop creative, artistic, and whole individuals. Programming enhances life in southeast Wisconsin through exceptional music instruction and performances that nurture generations of innovative, inspired, and visionary citizens. THE NEED Music education, once a staple in schools and community organizations in Greater Milwaukee and throughout the country, is in the midst of a difficult and prolonged period of funding and program cuts. Inner-city school districts have been especially effected by this decline. In a report released by the Department of Education in 2012, it was found that 100% of school districts that serve a majority of “free or reduced lunch” had a music program in 1999. By 2012, the year of the most recent update by Department of Education, only 81% had music programs.

OUR PROGRAMSSchool administration, musicians, and music teachers increasingly turn to the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music for educational leadership, curriculum, lessons, and highly-qualified faculty. Conservatory Connections, our community outreach program, provides a wide range of music education residency options, thus making the program valuable to school districts in need of music educators, though unable to staff the positions themselves. The number of partnerships increased by 31% in one year. The Conservatory is uniquely positioned to directly meet the needs of these under-programmed, and often times under-funded organizations with exceptional teaching artists. The program provides individually designed partnerships for public, private, choice, and charter schools, senior living and day facilities, daycares, public libraries, and community organizations. While community programming may reach the largest number of students, our private lessons, classes, camps, and festivals uphold the quality standards set by our founders more than a century ago. By maintaining the highest quality programming, we not only give every student an incredibly valuable experience, we also are able to attract and retain the most qualified teaching artists in all major instruments and music styles.

NEW FOR 2015-16Well-established programs thrived in 2015-16, with significant to small increases in participation across the board. While maintaining the quality of each of those educational opportunities consumes much of our administrators’ and faculty’s time, new programs were launched in 2015-16 to meet the needs of an ever-expanding demand for music education.

· Music Counts, our general music for K4-5th Grade was launched in the Fall of 2015. Our faculty and staff spent three months developing a curriculum that meets local, state, and federal learning standards. This makes the program especially attractive to schools looking for standards-based and day-one ready educational opportunities.

· The Chamber Music Institute was launched in the summer with the first-ever Chamber Music Camp. This provides current and new students who study privately to perform in ensemble with a small number of other instrumentalists. It serves as an important musical experience but also provides these students with a social atmosphere to meet new friends.

· To meet the growing demand for piano lessons, a new studio location was established at the Steinway Gallery of Milwaukee in Wauwatosa. We continually look for ways to expand our studio locations as a way to expand our mission throughout the state of Wisconsin.

_____________

Through the broad range of programming, the Conservatory provides rich musical experiences for children and adults, enhancing music programs that exist in schools, offering financial aid to those in need, fostering relationships with professional musicians, motivating young people to study music, increasing knowledge of music, and developing enlightenment, creativity, self-confidence, discipline, and responsibility in the lives of thousands across southeast Wisconsin.
