By Les Willseyazpreps365.com Last season Chandler and Sandra Day O'Connor stole theDivision I boys soccer spotlight in a highly-entertaining final wonby Chandler. Left out of the final were teams familiar with cen-terstage -- Brophy Prep and Hamilton. Are they primed to regaintheir footing in that regard over the next two weeks? Possibly. Brophy is the D-I tournament's No. 1 seed andHamilton is No. 3 as competition opens Wednesday (Feb. 3) atthe sites of the high seeds. The Broncos and Huskies are two ofonly three teams among the top-10 seeds with winning recordsagainst other top-10 tourney seeds. Brophy was 3-0 during theseason and Hamilton 5-1 in such matchups. No. 7 seedHighland is the other with a 4-1-1 mark. Hamilton and Brophyhave met in the D-I final three of the last five years. Six of the top-10 seeds (Pinnacle, Mesa High, Corona delSol, Campo Verde, Chaparral and Ironwood) have one win or nowins vs. a top-10 seed. Overall there hasn't been a lot of crossplay among the top 10 seeds in power-ranking matches or invi-tationals. Five of the first-round matches are first meetings thisseason. Matchups to date and past prowess seem to point toBrophy and Hamilton as the favorites to reach the finals on Feb.13, but last year's final between a No. 7 seed and a No. 9 seedshows nothing is a sure thing. Here's a brief look at the top-10 seeds -- highest to lowest: No. 1 Brophy (12-5-3): The Broncos did not lose a power-ranking match (11-0-1) and their blemish was a season-endingtie with Liberty. That followed a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 2Pinnacle two days earlier. Brophy bowed in the semifinals lastyear to Chandler and graduated 15 seniors. Coach NoahLewkowitz has seen a core of young players meld to contenderstatus. Leading the way is sophomore Carter Clemmensen with27 goals, including four hat tricks. Sam Fletcher is next with sixgoals and six assists and Sam Tolson has five goals and fiveassists. The defense is led by seniors Ethan Shacknai, GarretAnson and keeper Nick Bruguglio and junior BrandonTheodorou. Marquee wins are over Pinnacle, Mesa andIronwood. No. 2 Pinnacle (20-2):  Coach Brock Heykoop saw the good

and bad of closing the Pioneers' regular season facing Brophy.Though Pinnacle lost, 3-2, Heykoop said his team needed amatch against a high-powered foe to be ready for the level ofcompetition ahead at state. Pinnacle's attack is led bysenior Dan Malki with 31 goals and 11 assists.  SophomoreDylan Stevenson has 11 goals and seven assists and MattGrimes is next with nine goals. The team's assists leader is MattBertocchi with 14. Captains Grimes and Gus Sevchik lead thedefense and keepers Robby Kalna and Joaquin Rodriguez havecombined for five shutouts. Pinnacle's only losses are to Brophyand Hamilton -- the Hamilton loss in the finals of the ArizonaSoccer Showcase in late December. Pinnacle played only threematches against top-10 seeds at state. No. 3 Hamilton (13-2-4): The Huskies have faced a lot of thetop competition in the division with wins over Pinnacle, Coronadel Sol, Highland, Campo Verde and Chaparral. Hamilton got anoffensive lift this season with the arrival of Josh Drack, who hascontributed mightily with 24 goals. The Huskies defense is ledby junior Beto Vidana and keeper Alex Deahr, who has eightshutouts. Hamilton's game relies on technique and speed ofplay. It has played four teams in its half of the bracket -- Pinnacle, Corona, Chandler and Highland. No. 4 Gilbert (13-5): Defense has been the key factor in the

Tigers' success this season. Captains Luke Boudreau andAllaene Espinoza anchor the back. Nine of Gilbert's 13 wins arevia shutout. Keeper Noah Rivera has credit for the sevenshutouts with a 1.07 goals-allowed-averge.Gilbert is 2-3 vs. top-10 tournament seeds. Gilbert's wins over top-10 seeds areCampo Verde and Chaparal and its losses are to Mesa,Highland and Ironwood. No. 5 Mesa (11-3-1): The Jackrabbits have enjoyed a niceyear despite returning only three starters. Defense and ball con-trol are the staples. Mesa's three captains are defenders -- sen-ior Issac Garcia and Brian Gomez and junior Josh Lagunas.Three keepers have split time this year after last year's onlykeeper graduated. Omar Callejas have done the bulk of thegoal-tending and have five shutouts.  Moises Durazo and AlexSalgado are the top scorers with six goals each. Jose Reyesleads in assists with five. No. 6 Corona del Sol (14-4-1): The Aztecs 1-2 punch isarguably the best in D-I with John Rea (26 goals) and RyanFlood (20 goals). Corona is a dangerous playoff team andthought by many to have a good chance at reaching the finals. Its defense will have to play better. The Aztecs open withdefending champ Chandler, who defeated Corona 1-0 nearlytwo weeks ago. A quarterfinal rematch with Hamilton could loomif the Aztecs topple Chandler. The Aztecs have split two gameswith Hamilton, winning 3-2 and losing 4-2. Corona is 1-2-1 vs.top-10 tournament seeds (loss and tie with Camp Verde besidesspilt with Hamilton). No. 7 Highland (12-3-2): The Hawks have allowed thefewest goals of any D-I team (13). Keeper Jacob Faircloth haseight shutouts and defenders Chris Boyd, Peysen Webster,Hunter Peterson and Nathan Miller have been staunch in theback. Offensively the Hawks are led by Hunter Figueroa (14goals) and Raphalello Colasito (8 goals). Highland's 4-1-1record vs. top-10 tournament seeds reveals wins over Gilbert,Mesa, Campo Verde (2), a tie with Chaparral and a loss toHamilton. No. 8 Campo Verde (16-4-2): Climbing the ladder to D-I withits girls program hasn't been easy, but quite successful. Led bycaptains Luke Gleadle, Jonathan Zimmerman and Gary Taylor, the Coyotes were in the hunt for the section title down to thefinal week. Gleadle leads the attack with 18 goals and has fiveassists. The defense is the Coyotes' strength led by JonathanZimmerman, Trevor Devlin, Nathon Smith and keeper JustinZimmerman. Justin Zimmerman has a .688 goals-against aver-age). Campo Verde is on the short end of beating top-10 tourna-ment seeds (1-4-1). The Coyotes lost to Highland twice, Gilbertand Hamilton (2-0). They own a win and tie with Corona del Sol. No. 9 Chaparral (13-4-3): The Firebirds bolted from the gatewith a 9-0-1 record that included winning the Bulldog Invitationalhosted by Goldwater. Since then Chaparral is an even .500 (4-4-2) with the toughest part of its schedule coming from lateDecember forward. Chaparral is 0-2-2 against top-10 tourna-ment seeds. The ties are with Highland and Mesa and losses toHamilton and Gilbert.   No. 10 Ironwood (10-4-1): The Eagles are in the playoffs for

a third year in row, having bowed out last year to eventualchamp Chandler and to eventual champ Brophy in2014. Ironwood possesses good team speed that's explosive attimes. James Holmes tops the goal-scoring chart with 19 andCarlos Avechuco has six goals and 18 assists. The defense isled by senior center back Rogelio Guerrero and junior centerback Gerardo Rodriguez.

By Les Willseyazpreps365.com Its seed is not uncommon. Xavier Prep is No. 1 as the 2016Division I state soccer tournament unfolds Tuesday (Feb. 2) andculminates with the final on Saturday Feb. 13. The Gators havebeen the toughest team to score against in the division, have a loneloss to an Arizona school and a knack of playing deep into statetournaments, if not winning them.Until a rare blip last year. That's when the third-ever, one-and-

done at state took place for Gators. Xavier was the No. 2 seed andupset in the opening round by No. 15 Chandler High, whichadvanced to the semifinals before bowing out. That's not somethingXavier need apologize for, but it's likely to have the Gators highlymotivated this year. Xavier's other opening-round exits were in 1998and 2006. Xavier has been no worse than a top-4 seed each of thelast 10 years and No. 1 or 2 seven of those 10. Girls soccer hasbeen sactioned by the AIA since 1990.Winning this year's tourney won't be easy despite Xavier's per-

formance to date. No. 2 Perry and No. 3 Desert Vista have beenpretty darn good, too. Perry reached the D-I final in 2014 losing toPinnacle so the Pumas would love another crack at a title. DittoDesert Vista, which has lost in the finals two of the last four years, including last year. A good bet would be a Xavier-Perry or Xavier-Desert Vista matchup in this year's final. However, there's always anunxpected result or two along the way. This year should be no dif-ferent.Here's a brief look at the top 10 teams by seed -- highest to low-

est:

No. 1 Xavier (14-2-3): The Gators haven't worn out the score-board compared to some other qualifiers, but the eight goalsallowed in 19 matches is tops. As a team they have 10 shutouts.Defense is anchored by juniors Elena Zurek, Katie Moore andMadie Amavilah and sophomore Madeline Warren. Sophomorekeeper Kinsey Ehmann has registered 10 shutouts. Xavier's leadingscorer is sophomore Nicole Hook (eight goals) followed by EmilyChiap (6) and Alexis Allard (5). Three of Allard's goals have beengame-winners and she leads the team in assists with 10. Xavierroutinely plays in the prestigious Excalibur Invitational in Californiaand enjoyed its best finish there (fourth) this season. Xavier posteda 6-1 record vs. top-10 tournament seeds.

No. 2 Perry (17-2-2): The Pumas are young with six sophomoresstarting and have scored a bunch (73 goals). Hard to concentrateon one or two players as six have scored between five and 13 goalsfor the year. Many of those goals were tallied in invitationals inDecember. Leading the way are senior Kambree Meskill (13 goals),sophomore Amanda Dahl (11) and junior Kelly Cannistra (10).Meskill has 12 assists and Dahl has 11. Perry boasts a 5-2-1 recordagainst the top-10 tournament seeds. All eight schools in its sectionqualified for state and four of its seven section matches were decid-ed by one goal.

No. 3 Desert Vista (17-3-1): The Thunder didn't win their section, but managed to hand section-champ Perry its only section loss, 2-1. Defense has always been the keystone of coach MarvinHypolite's teams at DV. This year is no exception as the Thunderhave given up only 11 goals. Keeper Kamrie Gunderson has turnedin nine shutouts and is helped in the back by Jessica Hale andLauren Schooler. Desert Vista will need others to pick up thedefense with the loss of two senior captains to suspension lastweek. Three players have scored in double digits for the season --Paige Maling (14), Tatum Heering (12) and Olive Jones (10). Inmatches against teams seeded in the top 10 this season DesertVista is a lofty 9-2-1.

No. 4 Hamilton (15-3-2): The Huskies offensive leader is sopho-more Brianna Atterbury, who has 20 goals and eight assists. But it's

defense that has paved the way to another solid season. Juniorkeeper Luz Galindo has 12 shutouts. Hamilton was 4-3-1 againsttop-10 tournament seeds. Hamilton has faced six of the seventeams in its half of the state bracket this season with a 5-0-1 mark.None of those teams (Gilbert, Pinnacle, Highland, Campo Verde,Corona del Sol and Red Mountain) scored against them. Hamiltondidn't play top-seed Xavier.

No. 5 Pinnacle (11-6-1): The Pioneers season was boosted withtransfer of two-time Gatorade Player of the Year Kelsey Turnbowfrom Washington. Turnbow has scored 23 goals and is the focalpoint of the offense. Defensively Pinnacle is led by Sarah Loy, CarlyGoehring and Adrianna Rodriguez. Pinnacle didn't fare well againsttop-10 tournament teams this season with a 2-4-1 record. Three ofthose matches were against No. 6 Chaparral (1-1-1). Pinnacle lostto Xavier, Hamilton and Corona del Sil -- teams in its half of thebracket.

No. 6 Chaparral (14-3-2): The Firebirds are another squad thatwins with defense. They've allowed only 11 goals this season withsix coming in losses to Xavier (3-0) and Pinnacle (3-2). SeniorAllison Jorden leads in scoring with eight goals followed by seniorsSophia Struckman and Aliciai Jamison with seven goals apiece.Freshman Emma Carlson has a team-high eight assists. Defense isled by juniors Chloe Christakos and Rachel Brown. Chaparral post-ed a 3-2-1 record against top-10 tournament teams. The wins wereagainst Desert Mountain, Pinnacle and Corona del Sol.

No. 7 Desert Mountain (12-5-3): The Wolves were the No. 1seed last year and have bounced back with a solid season with newcoach Mark Eggleston taking over for Brad Keller. A pair of sopho-mores fuel the attack. Delaney Rohde and Ashley Valdivieso havescored nine goals each. Valdivieso is the top returning scorer after a10-goal, freshman campaign. Goalkeeper Sophia Lettieri has loggedseven shutouts this season. All five of Desert Mountain's losseshave come vs. the top six seeds in the tournament -- Xavier, DesertVista (2), Pinnacle and Chaparral. The Wolves played Perry to a tie.

No. 8 Campo Verde (10-7-3): An impressive resume for theCoyotes in a short time. They won the D-III title in 2013. Qualifiedfor postseason each of the two years in D-II (finishing runner-up toNotre Dame last season). Earning a top-8 seed in a D-I debut isimpressive. Campo Verde has not defeated a top-10 tournamentteam (0-6-2), but the second half of the season it has played muchtougher against that brand of opponent. Proof of that are tiesagainst Desert Vista and Hamilton. Whitley Jones' 14 goals leadsthe team followed by Kyla Galdos with nine. Defense is led by cap-tains Janelle Halter, Sebrina Rodriguez and Maia Gajate. KeepersAmanda Canzona and Shelby Nelson have shared time. Canzonahas registered a team-high 84 saves.

No. 9 Corona del Sol (9-8-1): The Aztecs have hovered aroundtheir final mark of .500 all season. A three-game losing streak in lateDecember was followed by a three-game winning streak to open thenew year. The Aztecs have won three of their last four matches.Corona defeated its first-round opponent Campo Verde as part of itsseason-best three-game win streak. Corona is 3-4-1 vs. top-10 tour-nament seeds. The losses are to Perry, Desert Vista, Hamilton andChaparral. Offense for the Aztecs has been dominated by sopho-mores Olivia Nguyen (11 goals) and Skylar Byrnes (7).

No. 10 Mountain Pointe (7-8-3): The Pride are under .500 forthe year, but competing in Section 2 of the division is as tough as itgets. Mountain Pointe has played nine matches against top-10 tour-nament seeds and gone 1-7-1 in those encounters. Its win was overNo. 8 Campo Verde and tie with No. 9 Corona del Sol. MountainPointe is led by captains Grace Blair, Emily Lynch and Erin Lynch.Defense is anchored by Blair and Erin Lynch. Top offensive playersare Ali Turk (6 goals, 3 assists) and Emily Lynch ( 4 goals, 6assists).
