Department of Athletics Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Lincoln University shall be to provide National Collegiate Athlet-ics Association (NCAA) Division II programs for men and women that are equally characterized by excellence. The primary phi-losophy of the Department of Athletics is that our staff and pro-gram develop and hold the concept of the student-athlete at the highest level of significance. This important standard must be encouraged and supported and never compromised, thus emphasizing to the student-athlete the importance of not only obtaining a degree, but also in reaching full academic and ath-letic potential.

The Intercollegiate Athletic program shall reflect due regard for the athletic traditions of Lincoln University, as well as future promise. The program shall fall within Lincoln’s abilities to pro-vide appropriate facilities, along with the location, allows Lin-coln to schedule conveniently and competitively and fall within financial capabilities of Lincoln University to fund adequately. The goal of the Department of Athletics is consistent with the core mission of the university: to provide excellent educational opportunities for a diverse student population. Our student-athletes will be viewed as students first, and only then as ath-letes. The department will focus on producing graduates who are successful, well-rounded and prepared to make positive contributions to society.

Academic achievement in the classroom, together with the development of character, individual and team skills, the will to win and a sense of fair play and sportsmanship in athletic competition determines distinction in intercollegiate athletics programs. Such distinction is a source of pride and enthusiasm for Lincoln University, among its constituent groups including students, faculty and staff, alumni, community and friends at all levels of interest.

The Department of Athletics will strive to be a leader in areas of ethics, non-discrimination, diversity and authentic fiscal integrity throughout the Lincoln University campus, the state of Missouri and the country. At the same time, student-athletes must be given the greatest opportunity possible to strive for the highest athletic standards through the best preparation, motivation and support.

Jason Hall was originally built in 1958. Over the years, an addition was made to the front of the build-ing, along with several other minor renovations. The first phase of the Jason Hall renovation took place with an installation of a new HVAC system, a new basketball court and bleacher system. In 2008, the second phase addressed safety issues within the building, such as updating the sprinkler system. The Physical Education department received a new of-fice complex, complete with private offices and a conference room. New audio/visual equipment was also installed in the PE classrooms. The coaches' offices were also renovated to allow for more privacy. The locker rooms were completely redone and a new weight room with state-of-the-art equipment was constructed. The restrooms, ticket booth and concessions area were also remodeled. Finally, a new Daktronics scoreboard was installed in the gym to allow fans the chance to see up-to-the-second player points and other stats.

At Blue Tiger Fest on Thursday (Aug. 27), the Lincoln men’s basketball team added one more player. As head coach John Moseley told the crowd, though, what impressed him about this young man wasn’t his jump shot or his ability on the court, but his background of fighting through adversity.

This past June, Lincoln began working with Team IMPACT, an organization that strives to improve the quality of life for children who are facing chronic or live-threatening illnesses by matching those kids with collegiate teams. Through this partnership, Moseley learned about Blaze Gilzow, a six-year-old boy who was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, essentially meaning he was born with half of a heart. The illness causes Blaze’s

heart to occasionally malfunction, creating pathways that change his oxygen levels and result in breathing difficulties.

By the time Blaze was three, he’d had three open heart surgeries. Blaze also has stints in his aorta to help reroute blood flow and takes medication daily to reduce his blood pressure. By looking at Blaze, however, you would only see a typical six-year-old boy who loves the sport of basketball. Blaze’s courage in battling through this illness is what drew him to the Blue Tigers.

“[Team IMPACT] contacted us to gauge our interest,” Moseley said. “To me, though, it wasn’t so much the organization as it was Blaze’s story. He’s a kid who loves basketball, plays like any other six-year-old. But he’s getting to learn he’s a little different, and I thought our team could offer him confidence and support. I also think Blaze offers our team something - inspiration, a reason to give and motivation to play a little tougher.”

Moseley decided to learn more about Blaze and, on Thursday, he and the rest of the Blue Tigers officially wel-comed Blaze to the team. At Blue Tiger Fest, Moseley invited Gilzow up to the stage and introduced him to the crowd. The team presented Blaze with a jersey bearing the number 10 as well as his name, making him an official member of the squad. The rest of the players surrounded Gilzow as the audience gave a big round of applause.

Team IMPACT said that Blaze was thrilled to become the newest Blue Tiger, and Moseley said he knows that Blaze will inspire his teammates throughout the upcoming 2015-16 campaign.

Team IMPACT has worked with over 300 schools in 43 states and has positively impacted the lives of more than 700 children. For more information on the organziation, visit their website at http://www.goteamimpact.org/.

John Moseley enters his second season as the head men’s bas-ketball coach at Lincoln University with a wealth of NCAA Division I experience.

During his first season with the program, Moseley helped guard Joshua Buie become the only player to finish in the top-five in the MIAA in both scoring and assists. Buie also became the first player in program history to be selected as a Capital One/CoSIDA Aca-demic All-District player, as Buie was one of just two MIAA players to earn the prestigious honor during the 2014-15 season.

Moseley joined Lincoln after spending the previous four years at North Carolina Central University, including the last three as the team’s associate head coach.

Working with head coach LeVelle Moton, Moseley helped lead the Eagles to a 28-6 record, tying the program record for wins in a season, and both the regular season and tournament Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships. NCCU earned a No. 14 seed in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, where the Eagles fell in the second round to No. 3 Iowa State.

During Moseley’s time at North Carolina Central, the Eagles in-creased their win total all four years, going from 15 victories in 2010-11 to 17 in 2011-12 to 22 in 2012-13. In each of the past two seasons, NCCU went 15-1 in MEAC play, and in 2013-14, was a perfect 14-0 at home. Moseley was the position coach for two play-ers who went on to earn All-MEAC honors, including a first team and a second team selection.

In addition to the Eagles’ success on the court, Moseley helped his players succeed in the classroom, as NCCU earned its highest APR in program history this past year, with the team posting a GPA of 2.85 during the fall of 2012.

Moseley brings 10 years of NCAA Division I experience with him to Lincoln. A 1998 graduate of East Carolina University, Moseley returned to his alma mater in 2008 to serve as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations. In 2009, Moseley was promoted to assistant basketball coach, serving as the recruiting organizers. In both of his years with the Pirates, ECU posted double digit wins.

Prior to coaching at East Carolina, Moseley was an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State University in 2007-08, where helped lead the team to its most Division I victories in program history.

Before that, Moseley made a one-year stop at Wright State University, working as an administrative assistant on a Raiders team that won Horizon League regular season and tournament championships.

Moseley’s teams have enjoyed success at every one of his stops, and he has proven he can win at multiple levels of competition. Moseley was the head basketball coach at War-ren County High in Warrenton, N.C. from 2004-06, leading the program to its first state championship in 23 years.

This will be the first head coaching job at the collegiate level for Moseley, who has a bachelor’s degree in science, exercise and sport science as well as a master’s degree in education and athletic administration.

Moseley and his wife, Crystal, have a daughter, Jillian.

Ed Wilson, a six-year coaching veteran at Penn Valley Community College, joined the Lincoln men’s basketball team as an assistant coach in August of 2014. Wilson is currently in his second season with the Blue Tigers.

Wilson, who began his coaching stint at Penn Valley in 2008, helped guide the Scouts to four 20-win campaigns during his six seasons on the staff. Penn Valley won 22 games in each of the past two seasons, averaging 84 points and 34 rebounds per game during that span. In Wilson’s first season on the coaching staff, the Scouts won 28 games, and in his second the team tallied 22 wins. In total, Wilson helped coach the Scouts to 127 victories and five winning seasons. During that time, the Scouts also won two regional championships and made a pair of NJCAA national tourna-ment appearances.

Among Wilson’s responsibilities at Penn Valley included pre-game prepa-rations, leading film sessions and designing individual development plans. Wilson also helped coordinate scouting and recruiting for the coaching staff and helped bring prospective student-athletes to the pro-gram. Wilson, who also has experience working as a mediator and behav-ioral specialist, directly worked with two players who earned All-American honors and Regional Player of the Year awards.

Wilson began his collegiate career as a player for Penn Valley, earning first team all-region honors as a freshman after leading the Scouts to a 29-6 re-cord and an appearance in the NJCAA National Championship game. As a sophomore, Wilson was named the regional most valuable player. Wilson, who earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts from Park Valley in 2003, was inducted into the Scouts’ Hall of Fame in 2010.

Following his two years at Penn Valley, Wilson played two more seasons at Park University, ultimately graduating with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies in 2007. Wilson was a two-time team captain and all-conference selection at Park, and in 2005-06 led the team in both points and re-bounding.

Harold Robertson, one of the greatest players in the history of the Lin-coln University men’s basketball program, was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame on June 6, 2013. Robertson, who led NCAA Division II in scoring with an MIAA record 34.5 points per game during the 1977-78 season, became the first Lincoln athlete to be inducted into the league’s hall of fame.

The MIAA’s Most Valuable Player and an Associated Press Little All-

American first team selection in 1977-78, Robertson led Lincoln to four NCAA Division II Regional appearances, two league regular season cham-pionships and one tournament crown during his time as a Blue Tiger. Robertson scored 2,551 points during his Lincoln career, the second-most by any player in MIAA history.

In that special 1977-78 campaign, Robertson led Lincoln to a 22-6

record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. He scored 965 points, which still stands as the MIAA’s single season record, en route to earning All-American recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Street & Smith magazine and Basketball Weekly magazine. Robertson was also selected to the NCAA Division II Regional All-Tournament team and he was invited to play in the NABC

Collegiate All-Star Game. A three-time All-MIAA first team selection and two-time league MVP, Robertson set three other marks that, to

this day, are still conference records. On Jan. 11, 1978, Robertson scored an MIAA single game record 59 points against Arkansas-Little Rock. He also owns the league’s career (1,116) and single season (408) records for field goals made. Making these accomplishments all the more impressive is the fact that Robertson played in an era where there was no shot clock or three-point line.

Robertson, who twice earned NABC All-District V honors and was a two-time selection to the MIAA’s All-Tour-

nament team, was selected in the fourth round of the 1978 National Basketball Association draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. The MIAA Hall of Fame will become the second Hall to induct Robertson, as he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 for his play at Lincoln.

The 2013 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on June 6, 2013 at the Kansas City Public Library in

Kansas City, Mo. Joining Robertson in the hall were Gene Bartow (Central Missouri), Janet Clark (Northwest Mis-souri), Mark Curp (Central Missouri), Dr. Peggy Martin (Central Missouri), Sherri Reeves (Northwest Missouri), Tom Smith (Central Missouri & Missouri Western), Warren Turner (Missouri Southern), Ronnie West (Pittsburg State) and league basketball official Bill Westbrooks. Also chosen for induction were the 2003 Central Missouri baseball team, the 2004-05 Washburn women's basketball team and the 2009 Northwest Missouri football team, each of which won national championships.

Donald Corbett, the winningest men’s basketball coach in Lincoln Uni-versity history, was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame on June 5, 2014. Corbett, who led the Blue Tigers to five NCAA appearances in his eight seasons as head coach, became the second person from Lincoln to enter the league’s hall of fame, joining one of his players, the legendary Harold Robertson.

The head coach at Lincoln from 1971-79, Corbett won 159 games with just 59 losses for a winning percentage of .729, the best by any coach in program history. Corbett guided the Blue Tigers to MIAA three regu-lar season championships, including in 1977, when the Blue Tigers also won the league tournament title. Lincoln also won league champion-ships under Corbett in 1972 and 1975. The Blue Tigers went to the NCAA tournament in all three of those seasons, as well as following the 1975-76 and 1977-78 campaigns, with the Blue Tigers falling in the Elite Eight to Wisconsin-Green Bay, 63-61, during that last appearance.

During Corbett’s eight-year tenure, the Blue Tigers never had a season in which they won fewer than 17 games, and in four of those seasons LU won 20 or more contests. Corbett led Lincoln three 22-win campaigns, with that victory total tying for the second-most in a season in program

history. Twice under Corbett, in 1971-72 and 1976-77, the Blue Tigers went 11-1 in MIAA play, with the 11 league wins being a school record. Overall, Corbett’s teams went 71-25 against MIAA competition for a winning percent-age of .739.

Corbett coached some of the best players in Lincoln history, including Robertson, who led NCAA Division II in scoring with a 34.5 average in 1977-78 and was twice the MIAA’s scoring champion. Following that 1977-78 cam-paign, both Robertson and teammate Tim Abney were named All-MIAA first team selections. Among the other notable players coached by Corbett are LaMont Pruitt, the MIAA’s scoring leader in 1972-73, and James Hampton (1971-72), James Edwards (1974-75) and Vince Humphrey (1975-76), who all were MIAA single-season rebound-ing leaders. During his eight seasons at Lincoln, Corbett coached six players who were selected All-MIAA, includ-ing Pruitt, who earned the distinction three times, and Robertson, who was recognized twice.

Following his tremendous success at Lincoln, Corbett went on to coach at North Carolina A&T, where he posted a record of 249-133 (.651) over 14 seasons. Corbett took A&T to seven MEAC regular season championships and seven MEAC tournament championships, with those seven tourney titles tying the University of Kentucky for the most consecutive tournament championships. A six-time MEAC Coach of the Year, Corbett led A&T to seven NCAA tournament appearances.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY 2015-16 MEN'S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

John Moseley enters his second season as the head men’s basketball coach at Lincoln University and his first as the program's interim athletic director.

Moseley joined Lincoln after spending the previous four years at North Caro-lina Central University, including the last three as the team’s associate head coach.

Moseley was the head bas-ketball coach at Warren County High in Warrenton, N.C. from 2004-06, leading the program to its first state championship in 23 years.

Moseley has a bachelor’s degree in science, exercise and sport science and a master’s degree in education and athletic administration, both from from East Carolina University. Moseley and his wife, Crystal, have a daughter, Jillian.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY 2015-16 MEN'S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Since 2003, few teams in any sport have achieved the level of success enjoyed by the Lincoln women’s track & field team. The Blue Tigers continued the dynasty in spring of 2014, when Lincoln won the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field national title. Winners of 11 total national championships over the past 12 years, including five-straight NCAA Division II outdoor titles from 2003-2007, the Blue Tiger track & field program was honored in 2013 by being inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Lincoln has established itself as one of the top track & field programs in all of NCAA Division II, having finished in the top three at every outdoor championship meet since 2003. That includes a special 2012 season in which both the Lincoln men and women finished as the national runners-up at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. No team in the MIAA has come close to matching what the LU women have done on the track, as the Blue Tigers have won eight conference indoor and outdoor championship meets since 2010.

The Lincoln men's golf team has also experienced the feeling of winning a championship recently, as the Blue Tigers have won the past two PGA Minority Collegiate Championship Division II tournaments. An annual golf tournament sponsored by the PGA and open to all HBCU men's golf programs, Lincoln posted wire-to-wire victories at the championship in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Blake Lammers continued the tradition by becoming the individual champion at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship.

Over the past four years, 10 of Lincoln's 14 athletic programs have qualified for some form of postseason competition. In 2011-12, the LU women's basketball team came within eight points of playing in the MIAA tournament championship game. In 2013, Twishana Williams became the only female runner in the MIAA to earn All-American honors. The Blue Tiger softball team, which had an athlete selected as an academic all-American in 2013, and the LU tennis team have also qualified for the MIAA championship tournament over the past three seasons while, in 2012-13, Cedric Ridle of the LU men's basketball team was the MIAA's scoring champion.

The women's track & field team poses with its 2014 championship trophy at a rally in Jefferson City.

Blake Lammers won the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in 2015.

Dan Carr joined the staff at Lincoln as the Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations in October of 2011. He is in his fifth year as a member of the Blue Tiger athletic department.

Carr serves as the primary me-dia contact for all 12 of Lincoln’s Division II teams, and is respon-sible for the writing, design and editing of all media guides and press releases. Among his main duties are maintaining and updating the athletic department’s website, recording statistics and working with various media outlets to promote all of Lincoln’s student athletes.

For the past three years, Carr has also served on the MIAA Basketball Championship committee, helping to organize and coordinate the conference’s post-season basketball tournaments. Carr, a member of CoSIDA, runs the Lincoln Athletic Department’s Twitter, Insta-gram and YouTube accounts. Carr was the on-site media relations coordinator when Lincoln hosted the 2014 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Regional.

Prior to coming to Lincoln, Carr worked as a sports in-formation assistant at Cleveland State University, where he served as the primary media contact for seven of the school’s 17 Division I sports. In 2011 he handled all the media relation duties for the Horizon League Swim-ming & Diving Championships and also worked with members of the press when the school hosted second and third round games of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

Carr also has experience in television, as he worked for BCSN, a cable sports network in the Toledo, Ohio area before entering the field of sports information. Carr recorded stats, did camera work and created graphics for a wide variety of high school and college sporting events.

Carr began his athletic career as a student assistant in Denison University’s sports information department from 2003-2005, ultimately graduating in 2005 with degrees in communication and theatre.

Lincoln UniversityHistory of Lincoln UniversityAt the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution in Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. The following stipulations were set for the school:

1. The institution shall be designed for the special benefit of the freed African-Americans;2. It shall be located in the state of Missouri;3. Its fundamental idea shall be to combine study and labor.

Members of the 62nd Colored Infantry contributed $5,000; this was supplemented by approximately $1,400, given by the 65th Colored Infantry. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was for-mally established under an organization committee. By June of the same year, it incorporated and the committee became a Board of Trustees. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant in the 62nd Infantry, was named first principal of Lincoln Institute. On Septem-ber 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class in an old frame building in Jefferson City.

In 1869, Lincoln Institute moved to the present campus, and in 1870 it began to receive aid from the state of Missouri for teacher training. College-level work was added to the curriculum in 1877, and passage of the Normal School Law permitted Lincoln gradu-ates to teach for life in Missouri without further examination. Lincoln Institute formally became a state institution in 1879 with the deeding of the property to the state. Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Lincoln became a land grant institution, and the fol-lowing year industrial and agricultural courses were added to the curriculum.

In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill introduced by Walthall M. Moore, the first black American to serve in that body, which changed the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln Univer-sity and created a Board of Curators to govern the University.

The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited the high school division in 1925, the teacher-training program in 1926, and the four-year college of arts and sciences in 1934. Graduate instruction was begun in the summer session of 1940, with majors in education and history and minors in English, history, and sociology. A School of Journalism was established in February 1942.

In 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, and Lincoln University responded by opening its doors to all applicably meeting its entrance criteria. Today, Lincoln University serves a diverse clientele, both residential and non-residential, engages in a variety of research projects, and offers numerous public service programs in addition to providing an array of academic programs.
