Elk Valley 2nd graders collect field data atPresque Isle.

STEM in the Gym,Jason Johnson (EVES)Elk Valley students are learningscientific concepts in anunusual way, through physicaleducation. Through this "STEM(Science, Technology,Engineering, and Math) in theGym" project, students canunderstand how simplemachines such as inclines, levers, pulleys, and wheel andaxle systems (among others)are beneficial to our society. It'sa fun way to support lessonstaught in the traditionalclassroom. As part of theiractivities, students physicallyuse a variety of specializedSTEM equipment tokinesthetically learn how simplemachines work and help usaccomplish tasks. Studentsactually experience themechanical advantage of eachsimple machine while learningabout force, load, work, andmore.
