What is Dual Credit?Dual Credit is the term given to courses in which high school students have the opportunity to earn both high school AND college credits at low cost.

Where are Dual Credit classes taught?Dual credit courses may be taught on the college campus, on the high school campus, online, or through a combination of methods.

• Students take 2‐3 courses each fall and spring terms.

FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) • What is FERPA?

– The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records.  The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

• However, there are options for students who would like their parents to receive this information.

– A student may log in to their student accounts at any time to show the record of grades to a parent.

– SOS & Blackboard Accounts• View an unofficial transcript, • Order official transcripts for

college/university applications • Pay tuition and fees• Print a degree evaluation,• Check class schedule and final grades

• Does FERPA give me a right to see education records of my son or daughter who is in college?

– When a student turns 18 years old or enroll in an institution of higher learning at any age,all rights afforded to you as a parent under FERPA transfer to the student.

– As college students, dual credit participants are protected by FERPA law and their information cannot be disclosed to parents.

– In practical terms, this means SJC cannot disclose information about a student enrolled in a college course to parents or other interested parties. In general, a college instructor cannot discuss a student’s grade or progress in a course with parents.

– High School and College Sharing Information: FERPA allows high schools and community colleges to share the educational records of dual credit students without the consent of either the parents or the student.

• Academic Freedom allows faculty and students to pursue whatever inquiry they feel is important and to speak about it in the classroom without fear of censorship. – Understand that within a college environment, students may encounter adult

language and images, different philosophical viewpoints and belief systems.

– Understand that appropriate and essential discipline specific terminology, concepts and principles are utilized as needed in the classroom setting.

– All high school students are held accountable to policies, rules, and regulations of the San Jacinto College District.
