Thermotherapy

The bipolar radiofrequency induced thermotherapy (RFITT) technique represents an effective, user-friendly andsafe alternative to conventional surgical methods, to laser technology and to monopolar high-frequencyapplications.

How Does Bipolar RFITT Work?The method is based on the principle of local thermaldestruction of pathologically altered tissue by use ofradiofrequency current. In other words, by heating to over80 °C, the affected tissue is destroyed and resorbed by thebody within a short time, leading to a volume reduction of thetissue. In addition, the body forms scar tissue which resultsin the tightening of the treated area.

The bipolar electrode arrangement used in the Celonapplicator permits precise delimitation of the treatment area,because the flow of current takes place exclusively betweenthe two poles at the tip of the applicator. In monopolarmethods, by contrast, the current flows through the wholebody of the patient. Bipolar RFITT is thus even suitable fortreating patients with heart pacemakers. A further advantageof the Celon method is that in most cases it can beperformed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesiaand with only minimal pain and discomfort to the patient. Italso involves very little bleeding and is an extremely efficientform of treatment.

RFITT in ENTIn ENT treatment, bipolar RFITT is used particularly successfully to treat turbinate hypertrophy and chronicsnoring. However, the Celon method can also be used togently treat more serious conditions such as obstructivesleep apnoea, where breathing is interrupted during the nightand leads to a lack of oxygen supply to the body, and alsofor treating tonsils. Another specially configured bipolarapplicator has been developed for treating tumors in theneck or head area.
