WELCOMEIt is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2015 Americas Expatriate Management Conference in Naples. This year’s conference is packed with exciting sessions, case studies, and panel discussions covering an array of international assignment program management topics. We know you will be inspired by the insights and analysis from an extremely knowledgeable group of industry, business, and Mercer experts.

Based on your feedback, we made changes to the conference format; expanding focus from North America to the Americas, sessions are more streamlined, and we are excited to host our keynote speaker, Dr. Arup Varma, Professor of Human Resource Management at Loyola University Chicago, for an engaging discussion on expatriate issues.

We really encourage you to participate actively, join in discussions and debates, and push back on our presenters with questions when you need details. We have also built in plenty of opportunities for peer-to-peer networking and a lighting fast round of speed networking; participants in prior conferences have told us that this is one of the most valuable aspects of these events.

Again, welcome. We are so glad you made the effort to attend the 2015 Americas Expatriate Management Conference. We plan to give you a return on your investment of time and money by presenting practical, actionable insights into mobility practices today that will help you optimize your international assignment programs for tomorrow.

KEYNOTE ADDRESSHOST COUNTRY NATIONALS – THE KEY TO EXPATRIATE SUCCESS?Dr. Arup Varma, Professor of Human Resource Management Loyola University Chicago Quinlan School of Business

Over the last decade or so, research on expatriate issues has been emphasizing the key role played by host coun-try nationals (HCN) in helping expatriates adjust to their assignment location, as well as by guiding them in the workplace.

PLENARY PANEL I: PROTECTING RETIREMENT AND HEALTH BENEFITS FROM MOBILITY THREATSAnn Marie Durning, Johnson & Johnson; Bill Greer, Kellogg Company; Tracey Roth, Brown Brothers Harriman; Lai Wang, Medtronic, Inc.; Kevin Dent, Mercer

This panel discussion will consider how mobility causes problems and inconsistencies in the provision of medical, retirement and other benefits to the mobile employees and a select panel of companies will share their experi-ences in accommodating and mitigating these issues.

PLENARY SESSIONSPLENARY PANEL II: LEVERAGING MOBILITY AND DIVERSITY TO WIN THE WAR ON TALENTHeather Henry, Marsh & McLennan Companies; Vickie Pierson, Monsanto Company; Michael Grover, Mercer

With more employers using the mobilization of talent as a key driver of growth, inclusion and diversity strategies are moving to the forefront of HR policies. But while employers seek to harness the collective knowledge and experiences of all of their employees, diversity of globally mobile staff has not kept pace with that of the local population—the proportion of mobile women remains persistently low, LGBT employees face specific barriers to mobility, an aging workforce and dual careers challenge existing policies and benefits.

Join our experts as we explore:

• barriers to mobilizing diverse talent• how to ensure equal career development

opportunities for all employee groups• best practice solutions for managing diverse mobile

talent• how mobility professionals can drive change within

their organizations

Dr. Varma has conducted several empirical studies in numerous countries around the world to investigate the relationship between HCN support and expatriate suc-cess. In this talk, he will draw upon his research findings and personal experience to offer specific suggestions so that organizations may successfully draw upon this key research.

A MOBILITY CONSULTANT’S GUIDE TO TRENDS AND BEST PRACTICESMike Shore and Conor Schoemer, Mercer

With the global economy showing signs of recovery, what will the impact on the Global Mobility function be to leverage new opportunities in existing and new emerging economies? We will use our survey results to examine how the Global Mobility function sees its role in supporting business strategy, discuss Mercer’s thoughts on potential future state and review the challenges and methods of selecting and measuring the ROI of assignments.

ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR THE MEDICAL NEEDS OF YOUR EXPATRIATES?Joe Barber and Steve Nurney, Mercer

The cost burden of offering comprehensive and competitive medical benefits to expatriate employees around the world has grown exponentially over the last few years, driven by medical inflation, growing regulation and the ever-increasing spread of countries where organizations are expanding or developing local entities.

In this session we will take a look at how — by combining three key areas of success — communication, coordination and collaboration — organizations will be able to gain greater control over their premium costs, create a governance model that supports compliance with regulation in multiple locations, and ensures that organizations maintain a competitive advantage while providing valued benefits to employees.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF GENERATION YJordan Blue and Jorie Weinger, Mercer

Much has been documented about Generation Y’s distinct-ly different behaviors, values and attitudes to previous gen-erations all of which have been largely blamed on the tech-nological and economic implications of the internet. Is generation Y really that different? This session will explore how this theory impacts today’s HR Professionals and whether or not there really has been a major shift which demands significant changes to Global Mobility Policies and what those changes might be.

THE MAIN CHALLENGES FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS IN LATAM - EMERGING MARKETSCaroline De Araujo, LATAM Airlines; Francisco Noriega, CEMEX; Sandra Huertas and Vince Cordova, Mercer

We will explore the complex global mobility landscape in this emerging region and examine common myths about expatriation. Multinationals operating in the region need to stay abreast of certain upcoming trends when setting their strategies for attracting and retaining talent. This ses-sion will address key challenges related to effectively man-aging the workforce and driving business strategy in LATAM considering realities of inflation and exchange rates in some of its countries.

INFLUENCING AND CHOOSING THE RIGHT EXPAT FOR THE ROLE Grayson Leverenz, RW3, LLC; Carlos Mestre, Mercer

Being a star performer in your home country does not nec-essarily mean your expat will be a star performer when sent on an international assignment. How can Global Mobility professionals be part of this conversation and selection pro-cess from the start? By positively impacting assignee suc-cess, you will be able to demonstrate the value of your Global Mobility function as a strategic asset.

TRENDS IN INTER-COUNTRY RELOCATIONEllie Sullivan, Weichert Workforce Mobility; Roger Herod, Mercer

Today, a growing number of companies are centralizing their global workforce mobility programs and as a result, are interested in harmonizing “domestic” policies where applicable. Understanding the norms and best practices for domestic moves and what provisions work locally will provide the foundation for effective relocation strategies.

This is also valuable information when dealing with perma-nent international moves and localizations. In this session you’ll gain insight into what is driving this trend from the Corporate HR perspective and the challenges involved. We’ll discuss some of the critical differences in domestic relocation policies between countries such as the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and the UK, which will allow you to gain a broader understanding of different relocation prac-tices. We’ll share information and benchmarking data about the type of innovative programs global companies are implementing and how they are harmonizing programs worldwide for intra-country moves.

COMPENSATION LOCALIZERMERCER’S LOCAL PLUS CALCULATOR

Streamline the way you pay international employees on a local compensation program

Compensation Localizer simplifies putting an employee on a host-based compensation program, gives you complete confidence in how the change will affect your employee, and helps determine any transitional or ongoing supplemental payments.

Use the tool to quantify the economic impact whenever you are putting an employee on a host-based compensation package, for:

Local Plus packages (where it is a feasible alternative to a traditional expat package).Localization (transitioning expatriates to host-based pay).One-way indefinite international transfers.Locally or directly hired foreigners.

Calculate the precise economic gain or loss to your transferee and the amount needed for the transferee to remain economically “whole.” Compare the package to the local market, using Mercer’s robust proprietary market remuneration data or your own local pay structure. Easily “sell” the package that represents a gain to the employee or decide whether to cushion a package that represents an economic loss.
