Haawka!

Greetings! (Translation from Iipaay ‘Aa, the Kumeyaay language)

As Inter Tribal Sports completes its twelfth year of existence, the theme of the past and the present emerges. As our Execu-tive Director departed amicably to pursue other endeavors, we were left with a leadership void. Thankfully, that void was quick-ly and capably filled by our new E.D., Ms. Angelina Renteria. Aided by an experienced Executive Board, Ms. Renteria helped us move on from our storied past and embrace an exciting and uncharted present.

In addition, while keeping key programs and services intact, several innovative accomplishments stand out as noteworthy for 2015:

A universal NIKE uniform has been adopted for use during three of the four sports we offer. This has made ordering and maintaining uniforms easier for everyone; while Dri-Fit technology keeps kids cooler in hot, Southern California envi-ronments.

Our commitment to Native American culture took a huge leap forward with the addition of peon tournaments to our semi-annual cultural gatherings. This traditional hand game originally played by ancestors of local tribes has really caught on and signals the young people’s desire to connect with their heritage.

We increased our community members’ knowledge of sport-specific nutrition this year. Our licensed nutritionist educated kids and adults on the best foods to eat for their ac-tivity level, during mandatory coaching clinics and at outreach booths on game days.

As a Native American-focused organization, it is important to walk in two worlds. Our aim is to blend the traditional and the modern. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our ef-forts to prepare our young people to succeed in the modern world while honoring their past. ‘Eyaay ‘Ehaan, Nyipily Nesoom (Thank You, That’s All for Now),

JOURNEY TO WELLNESS 3

Hello friends of ITS!

The 2015 year was a year of many changes from several new staff members to new ITS Nike N7 uniforms, a new Cheer program and new ideas from the community, board and staff alike. With the support, commitment and hard work of the nearly 30 tribal board members, dedicated ITS staff, community partners, tribal and grant funders, ITS was able to deliver programs to over 1,700 Native youth across three counties in Southern California!

Thanks to tribal and grant funding, ITS youth proudly sported new Nike N7 Dry Fit “Universal Uniforms.” The transition to this style arose from the need to ensure comfort and heat safety during the hot summer sports seasons. The new dry fit material helped keep nearly 1700 ITS athletes cool during softball, soccer and soft lacrosse seasons.

An exciting new addition to ITS programming was the Dreamcatchers Cheer Program. Thanks to a phenomenal volunteer and community advocate, Monica Perches, the Cheer Program was embraced by 53 young ladies representing 7 tribes who performed during basketball and flag football opening day and championships. Their energy and spirit brought ITS games to whole new level!

Bridging communities across 3 counties happens not only through the athletic programs offered by ITS but through the spring and fall ITS Youth Cultural Gatherings as well. Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians proudly hosted the 2015 ITS Youth Spring Cultural Gathering while the Barona Band of Mission Indians proudly hosted the 2015 ITS Youth Fall Cultural Gathering. Overall, 100 youth worked, shared, learned and reinforced together, that they come from a proud and rich history of people.

Additionally, when our communities speak, ITS listens. A 2015 Community Needs Assessment was completed as a method to gather community feedback and specific needs. As a result, to help ease the reported challenges that long distance games can create, ITS established Northern, Central and Southern regions in which all tribes come together to compete at Opening Day and Championships and when possible season schedules were created based on assigned regions.

Communities and supporters also voiced a need for a more user friendly website. Released on December 4th 2015, the new and improved ITS website has been a key resource for not only sharing information but for improving the capacity to deliver season schedules earlier than ever. Now coaches and families can plan out their schedules further in advance.

Finally, none of the above would be possible without the outstanding support of our tribal sponsors, grant funders and individual contributors. It is with their generous support, that ITS was able to reach over 1,700 tribal youth participants. And to the amazing youth athletes, volunteer coaches and tribal communities, ITS thanks you for allowing us to be a part of your journeys!

Sincerely,

Angelina RenteriaExecutive Director

Inter Tribal Sports, Inc. began offering Native American centered youth flag football leagues in September 2002. Soon to follow were basketball and softball leagues. All three sports were well received by tribal youth and communities and were identified as ITS’s core annual sports. To mix things up in 2012 soccer was added, followed by volleyball in 2013. After securing a grant in 2014 soft lacrosse was implemented in the 2015 sports season. Since the inception of ITS, thousands of Native American youth have competed on 971 ITS teams and counting.

In 2015, a total of 1,877 youth registered in ITS sports leagues, with 1,754 non duplicated youth athlete participants throughout the year. ITS leagues, including basketball, soft lacrosse, softball, soccer, and flag football, are divided into four age divisions: D-League (8 and under), C-League (11 and under), B-League (15 and under), and A-League (18 and under).

Included in each sports program, ITS offers pre-season coaches and players camps designed to introduce game fundamentals, coach certification, season expectations, rules, practice drills, nutrition education, season schedules and equipment distribution. To close the season ITS hosts arguably one of the most exciting events to witness, the division championships for A, B, and C-Leagues, where athletes perform at their peak and winners receive a custom ITS trophy and bragging rights for the year. Also, notable for 2015 was the introduction to the new Dry Fit Universal Nike N7 uniform. With the support of the Nike N7 Fund and the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, the ITS moisture wicking team uniforms provided comfort during the hot summer months and sported the globally recognized Nike Swoosh and Nike N7 logo. Below and on the following pages is a statistical breakdown, listing of championship teams, and pictures from each of the five sports that were offered in 2014.

2015 marks the fifth season of the ITS All-Stars Travel Basketball Team. This year’s teams consisted of 18U boys, 18U girls, and 13U Co-Ed. The ITS All-Star Travel Basketball Team was designed as an opportunity for youth to continue playing basketball during the off season for an extended four months of play. Travel ball athletes, are those players who display a high level of interest, are willing to put in the work and commitment, and have the desire to develop high level skills to play at a more competitive level. In addition, the Travel Ball Coaches undergo a competitive application process to ensure youth participants are receiving top notch coaching from individuals who have a strong commitment to tribal communities and high performance sports. Some of the benefits reported by athletes and their families include the ability to improve fundamentals, knowledge of the game, cultural pride, sportsmanship, discipline, inter tribal unity, social development and new friendships with athletes from other tribes.

In total, 38 youth participated on the 2015 Travel Basketball team. The teams practiced weekly, played in numerous local tournaments, as well as regional tournaments expanding as far as the NABI Tournament in City, Arizona and the Lori Payestewa Games in Las Vegas, Nevada. ITS would like to give special recognition to the 2015 ITS All-Star Travel Basketball Team, Coaches Ricardo Macias, Andy Silvas, and Daniel Padilla and to the parents for their commitment to their teams, themselves and their tribes through sport. Congratulations on your growth and successes in 2015!!

As one of the three pillars of enrichment identified in the ITS mission, Native culture is certainly what sets the organization apart from other youth service organizations. ITS is always seeking out new and innovative ways to authentically and respectfully implement cultural aspects into our programs and services. While various element of culture are present at all times, youth cultural gatherings have been the hallmark of this pillar since 2010. Typically, there is a gathering in the spring and fall with one tribe serving as the host community, which then has an opportunity to invite other communities to their reservation to share pieces of their traditions and history. The gatherings always feature an assortment of activities and a traditional meal.

The tradition of ITS cultural gatherings continued this year, with gatherings held at Soboba on June 13th and Barona on November 21st. In Soboba, 30 youth participated in basket weaving, shinny demo, Bird Singers: Inter Tribal Bird Singers, peon demo, storytelling, Well for Culture- Traditional Wellness, and Venison, beans and fruit. At Barona 100 total youth participated in a youth peon tournament, archery, cultural museum tour, arts and crafts, as well as the Fun Run.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMInter Tribal Sports launched its inaugural scholarship program in 2013, as a part of ITS commitment to encouraging the pur-suit of higher education. Native American youth from the ITS service area in southern California, that were graduating high school seniors or current college students attending a university, junior college, or trade school were eligible to apply. A total of $4,000 had been awarded to three inspiring young students. The 2015 class of scholarship recipients included:

Alec Calac Is a full-time out of state Native American student attending the University of Arizona, from Pauma Band of Luiseno Indians. Alec is studying Neuroscience & Cognitive Science, Molecular and Cellular Biology at U of A and plans to graduate in Spring of 2016 with a B.S. in Neuroscience and Molecular/Cellular Biology, having minors in Biochemistry and Computer Science. His hopes and dreams are to receive a MD-PhD degree in Neuroscience/Systems Biology, and pursue clinical-based academic research, as well as actively practice medicine. With this college education, he plans to give back to the Native American communities to offer his services.

David StreamerIs currently a full-time Native American student attending the University of California Los Angeles, from Los Coyotes Band of Indians. In 2015, David will be entering UCLA as a junior in the American Indian Studies department. His expected graduation date is Spring 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies. David’s long-term goal after his undergraduate degree is to return to school in pursuit of a law degree in either Tribal or Environmental Law. David hopes to return to the reservation “to promote youth programs that offer tutoring and education while at the same time teaching and preserving traditional and cultural way of life.” Streamer says this about Inter Tribal Sports, “ITS has helped me grow as a professional and continue to build relationships between my community and myself.”

Minda StreamerIs a tribal member from Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians, and currently a full-time student attending the University of California Los Angeles as a sophomore. Minda is in pursuit of a Bachelors of Arts in American Indian Studies class of 2018. Minda says, “When Inter Tribal Sports was first introduced to us, it brought on a whole new level of excitement. We were all very excited and eager to start playing. ITS had let us into a part of something greater and more meaningful with-in our community. We became closer to our Native roots as well as made more friends within our neighboring tribes. ITS had become a second support system to me, a support system with great resources.”

Taylor Denmark Is a tribal member from Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel, who received acceptance into California State Uni-versity San Marcos where she will be majoring in pre-nursing, in hopes to become a Neonatal Nurse in the class of 2019. After graduation, she plans to return home to Santa Ysabel and use her nursing degree to help her tribal community. Denmark says, “I’ve been playing for ITS since I was seven for Santa Ysabel, (ITS) is where I learned the fundamentals of sports: teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and athleticism. I learned how to challenge myself.”

16 ITS - 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

2015 was a significant year for the ITS wellness initiative as our group mobilized and took our wellness plan on the road. The provided funding allowed our wellness team the ability to go out in the communities and conduct nutrition education and food demonstrations with various tribal associates. An emphasis was placed on community outreach and providing heathy support to new and existing partners.

Re-Think your Drink The Re-Think your Drink campaign was introduced with the goal of raising awareness on the excessive amount of sugar found in soft-drink beverages. At each public event, educational material was distributed with facts concerning effective ways of keeping our bodies hydrated and Diabetes free. Many of our community members witnessed the actual amount of sugar found in their favorite beverages via a poster board presentation. Instead of supplying Gatorade at our events, infused waters and iced herbal teas were eagerly enjoyed by adults and youth alike.

Tribal Snack Bar Partnerships IITS started a change in food culture a couple years ago when the team decided that fast-food trucks were no longer acceptable at sporting events. This past year ITS embraced that true change stems from providing our community members with a choice in healthy food options. Thanks to the collaboration with our Tribal snack bars, our wellness group was able to create meals that were both nutrient-dense and delicious. Aside from the typical sports day snacks, members were able to purchase healthier alternatives to the foods they typically ate at Game Days. For example, our wellness staff prepared healthier nachos that utilized multi-grain chips and real melted cheese with a blend of spices. Multi-grain Turkey sandwiches and fresh fruit were also a successful hit with our athletes. This year was indeed a busy year for Rez Dogg and his team as they continued to pave the way for a new food journey.

Looking Forward Along with many accomplishments came the endless possibility of new opportunities. ITS has focused on providing sports-based nutrition education and programming to the communities it serves. The topic of wellness is consistently changing, and with those shifts come new ideas and innovative ways to keep our youth performing at their very best. Thanks to generous partner funding, ITS will be able to deliver effective programming for the upcoming year. Stay tuned, the best is yet to come.

WELLNESS GROUP OUTINGSThe tradition of ITS providing Native American youth with opportunities to connect socially and to be inspired by witnessing athletes playing at the highest levels continued in 2015. While some of the outings have become annual traditions, there were also two new outings of significance that were made possible by ITS’ longstanding relationship with Nike N7.

N7 is Nike’s long-time commitment and mission to inspire and enable two million Native American and Aboriginal youth in North America to participate in sport and physical activity. The N7 philosophy embraces the Native philosophy - In every deliberation we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.

This year Nike is celebrating eight years of N7. After nearly a decade of partnership with tribes across North America to support programs aimed at physically active lifestyles, in 2007 Nike deepened its connection to the Native American community with the launch of N7 beginning with the Nike Air Native N7 shoe. Nike then created the N7 collection in 2009 to celebrate Native American and Aboriginal culture and to raise awareness and funds for the N7 Fund, which has raised more than $3 million for Native American and Aboriginal youth sport programs.

The N7 Collection highlights the N7 philosophy of considering the lasting impact our decisions have on the planet and embodies Nike’s commitment to sustainable innovation by creating product engineered for superior athletic performance and lower environmental impact.

ITS entered into its fifth year as serving as a host and sponsor of AmeriCorps VISTAs. AmeriCorps is part of Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which

strives to provide opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to engage in service that ad-dresses the nation’s educational, public safety, environmental, and other human needs. The VISTA (Vol-unteers in Service to America) program, an idea generated by President John F. Kennedy in 1965, is spe-cifically targeted at reducing poverty in America. Today, nearly 6,000 VISTA members serve in hundreds of non-profit organizations and public agencies throughout the country. The opportunity was created by Nike N7 in 2012, which sponsored one of the VISTA placements through CNCS, and then ITS was eligible to receive a second placement at no cost.

AMERICORPS VISTA

Anna Shayo, a native of Kenya, began her service as Resource Development VISTA with ITS in November 2013. Anna diligently worked under the Development Specialist soliciting grants, fundraising and enhancing ITS’ marketing efforts. In May 2015 she ended her VISTA extension and stepped into the role of full-time Program Specialist at ITS. Anna completed her B.A. in International Development and Social Change with a concentration in Global Health, from Clark University (Worcester, MA). She has always been involved with her community through volunteer positions that empower children, adolescents and adults through education and self-esteem growth.

Eric Forte was our AmeriCorps VISTA, began his year of service in November 2014 and ended in November 2015. Eric served as our Program Development VISTA, and came to us from Sojourner-Douglass College (Baltimore, MD) where he obtained his B.A. in Social Work. Before attending college, he had worked for Job Corps, AmeriCorps NCC, The Boys and Girls Club and homeless shelters in central Baltimore to better assist the needs of the people in his community.

Erika Jaimes is our newest AmeriCorps VISTA and began her year of service in November 2015. Erika serves as our Volunteer and Development Coordinator VISTA, and comes to us from Santa Ana, California. She went to Humboldt State University (Arcata, California) where she obtained her B.S. in Wildlife Conservation and Management and a minor in Geospatial Analysis. During college, she was an active member of the Indian Natural Resource Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP) and the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

Income Inter Tribal Sports brought in $612,041.41 in revenues in 2015. Tribal sponsorship makes up 44% of the funding. Grants provided 46% of our revenue this year. Fundraising activities (6%), program income (2%), and personal donations (2%) made up the remainder of funding. Collectively, these sources allowed ITS to continue to provide impactful programs and services to the Native American communities of southern California.

FUNDING SOURCES

TRIBAL SPONSORSHIPDirect support from ITS’ member tribes has consistently accounted for slightly more than half of annual revenues. Requests for sponsorship are made to all member tribes and tribal organizations on an annual basis. In 2015, $281,000 was received by ITS from 10 different tribal sponsors. All funds received from tribal sponsors are reinvested directly back into the communities in the southern California service area by supporting programs and operations. Sponsors that contribute at the Gold and Silver Arrow levels not only cover the cost of youth participating from their own communities, but also support youth participation from other communities throughout the region.
