CEO LETTER

FACT: CHILDHOOD CANCER IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF DEATH BY DISEASE FOR KIDS IN AMERICA, AND INCIDENCE RATES ARE ON THE RISE. WE ARE WORKING TO CHANGE THAT DIRECTION.

Dear Friends,

It’s difficult for me at times to believe that Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation was started 23 years ago. There are many times when I feel as if it was just yesterday. It’s those days when I take the time to sit down and reflect on all that we have accomplished, and the many challenges along the way. It also reminds me to be grateful for the people who were there from the very beginning and helped me start Bear Necessities in the kitchen of my home. And it reminds me to be grateful for the many new people who join us in our mission each year and help us continue to grow the organization.

Pediatric cancer remains the number ONE cause of death by disease in our children, just as it did in 1992, when the foundation was born. Without each of you, we would not be able to bring hope to these brave children battling this disease every day of their lives.

Many wonderful accomplishments have happened in this past year, many dollars have been raised, much joy has been brought to our children but our work is far from being done.

Bear Necessities will continue to meet the needs of these children and their families though our Bear Hugs Program and our Bear Discoveries Programs but we need your help to further our reach and grow the foundation to another level. We do this because we need to step up and be advocates for the 15,700 children who are diagnosed each year, because shamefully less than 4% of all federal dollars allocated for cancer research goes to find a cure for our children, our future.

When I look back and think about sitting in the hospital room with Bear, as we discussed forming Bear Necessities, I am deeply touched, proud and blessed for the support that has been given to our organization over the years. We would not be where we are today if it weren’t for our wonderful supporters, family and friends. I want to extend my most sincere thanks to every single person who has had a part in making Bear’s dream a reality.

As we approach a new year, I humbly ask you to find new ways you can help us make an even bigger impact in the lives of these children.

Warmest regards,

Kathleen A. CaseyCEO, Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation

BEAR HUG

JACOBJacob a vibrant 8-year-old was referred to Bear Necessities after being diagnosed with a brain tumor in March of 2015. He loves to be outside in nature especially near rivers to fish in and has a love for trains and RVs. After Jacob’s diagnosis and beginning of treatment it has been more of a challenge for him to do the things he loves to do in the outdoors, including the addition of a wheelchair to help him get around.

When Jacob was presented with the opportunity to have a Bear Hug he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He had been longing to see Blue Man Group in Chicago with his family including his younger brother. Jacob also wanted to have lunch at Rainforest Café to help bring the tropical outdoors inside so he could enjoy it.

On a sunny Sunday in July, Jacob and his family made their way to the downtown Rainforest Café Chicago for lunch and caught the matinée of Blue Man Group. Jacob and his family were treated to an excellent lunch and then had “rockstar” seats so they could be up close and personal during the show.

Jacob’s mom shared, “The special memories he made & laughs he had with us and his little brother will be treasured forever. The genuine smile on his face the entire day was awesome to see!”

“Thank you for all of your hard work arranging everything. You gave us a day for family time and laughter, where nothing else mattered...and that means the world to us.” Lauren, Jacob’s mom

A special thanks to Blue Man Group Chicago and Rainforest Café Chicago for making this Bear Hug possible!

BEAR DISCOVERIESEach year, the parents of approximately 15,700 kids will hear the words “your child has cancer.” The words child and cancer should never be together in the same sentence. Unfortunately, only two drugs have been approved to treat pediatric cancer in the last quarter century. With less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) annual budget dedicated to pediatric cancer, it takes organizations like Bear Necessities to step up to fund research.

THE AUXILIARY BOARD*In 2014-2015, The Auxiliary Board, in its 9th year has surpassed 60 young professional members committed to raising awareness and funds to support the Foundation’s mission.

The Auxiliary Board hosted two major service events for the kids touched by Bear Necessities. The highlight of the year was the 5th Annual Teddy Bear Ball at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, in which patients and their families were invited for a day of crafts, face painting, and a magician. This year was a record attendance with more than 55 families participating in the special day. The second was the Annual Creative Collaborations held on two separate days to allow more children to participate. This event is hosted at the office allowing the kids to use their creative side and make art that was auctioned off at both the Purple Affair for the Bear and the Bear Tie Ball.

The Auxiliary Board hosted 3 smaller fundraisers located at local establishments over the year. While raising funds for Bear Necessities during these events, they also worked to spread the word to the younger professional community about all the good work this organization does for pediatric cancer. The board’s major fundraising event was the 9th Annual Signature Event, Purple Affair for the Bear: Masquerade was held in January 2015 at The Chicago Cultural Center in the Preston Bradley Hall. With over 600 guests in attendance, the Auxiliary Board raised over $72,000 for Bear Necessities.

* The Auxiliary Board has changed its name to The Young Professionals Board.

Co-Chairs Brian Ferron and Greg Kosinksi welcomed more than 90 golfers to Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer on June 29th for Golf for the Bear, which raised nearly $50,000. Golfers enjoyed numerous contest holes, including closest to the pin, longest drive, golf ball launching, hole-in-one, and more! After a day on the course, golfers enjoyed a BBQ dinner and a moving speech by Bear Hugs Ambassador, Ashley Gustafik, a 15-year-old who has received four Bear Hugs since 2003.

ANGELICAAngelica, a spunky 6-year-old’s life changed as she knew it when she was diagnosed with Leukemia ALL in January of 2014. When they received the call from Bear Necessities, Angelica became very excited about a day that would be planned just for her. When thinking about what she wanted to do, she wanted to make sure that she could include her brother and family in the experience and decided that a trip to the Disney Store for a shopping spree and then breakfast at one of her favorite restaurants would be perfect. So on a Monday morning, Angelica and her family went to the Disney Store in St. Louis an hour early to run through the store and pick out some things to take home with them. After completing their shopping spree they continued on to IHOP to share breakfast with her family to end her special day experience. Angelica’s Mom shared that it was so nice to see a smile on her face the entire day as well as a smile on her brother’s face. It was almost as everything was back to “normal” for one day. A big thank you to the Disney Store-St. Louis and IHOP-St. Louis for their generosity in helping to make this special day possible.

MASONAge 8Brain Tumor FACT: CHILDHOOD CANCER IS NOT JUST

ONE DISEASE. IT IS MADE UP OF A DOZEN TYPES AND COUNTLESS SUBTYPES. WITH YOUR HELP WE ARE CHANGING THIS.

PEDIATRIC CANCER AWARENESS DAYBear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day was on September 12, 2014. With a lot of help from our supporters, we were able to set-up a great display at Daley Plaza to help spread awareness about childhood cancer. Although the day was not what we had hoped for weather wise, it was eye-catching and successful. Why the shoes? To help our kids with cancer grow up and into their shoes.

TEAM BEAR THE CHALLENGE

For those who want to help

children with cancer through their

endurance abilities, Team Bear

the Challenge is for them. Any

endurance endeavor involving a

fundraising aspect can and has

helped our children in the fight

for their lives.

In addition to competing in

marathons, half marathons,

triathlons and other races across

the country, members of Team

Bear commit to raising funds for

Bear Necessities. By adding a

charitable focus to their physical

challenge, members of Team Bear

know all too well that crossing the

finish line is just the beginning on

the road to making an impact in

the lives of children and families

battling pediatric cancer.

A WALK FOR THE BEARBear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation held their first annual “A Walk for the Bear” – A Beary Spooky Stroll on October 26, 2014. The three-mile family friendly walk took place along the Chicago lakefront at Montrose Harbor. Over 250 participants joined in the fun and the top individual and group fundraisers received a special prize for their amazing efforts to help raise money for pediatric cancer research. We were also so grateful to our sponsors, Wintrust, Marianos, TCW, Culloton Strategies, A Mind and Body Total Fitness, and CorePower for helping the inaugural walk be possible.
