A-STATE/UT ARLINGTON SERIES HISTORY• UT Arlington leads the all-time series with A-State by a count of 36-34 and the two teams split

two meetings a season ago. A-State won two of three games in the regular season series in Arlington, but UTA won 8-7 in the SBC Tournament semifinals.

• The Red Wolves won the first game of the three-game set last season by a score of 5-1 with David Owen earning the win as three A-State pitchers combined to only allow one run. The Mavericks defeated A-State in the second game of the series 6-2 to give the Red Wolves its first conference loss of the season, but A-State bounced back to take game three 14-10 in an offensive showdown. UT Arlington ended A-State’s season with an 8-7 come-from-behind victory after the Red Wolves held a 7-6 lead in the 8th inning.

• The Red Wolves and Mavericks met for the first time in history during the 1969 season as members of the Southland Conference and A-State won both games over UTA by scores of 12-2and 2-0. The two schools competed as conference foes until the 1987 season and competed nine more times as non-conference members with UT Arlington holding a 6-3 advantage in those games, including a 5-4 win over A-State in Tommy Raffo’s second game as head coach.

LEE CONTINUES SUCCESS OUT OF THE BULLPEN• A-State sophomore LHP Coulton Lee was vital in A-State’s sweep of Houston Baptist last

weekend as he entered the last game of the series in the seventh inning and closed the game out to earn his first career save in the Red Wolves 2-1 victory.

• Lee allowed his first run of the season, but it was an unearned run due to an error in the eighth inning. He only allowed two hits in three innings of work and has now thrown 11.2 innings this season and still has a 0.00 ERA. He’s only given up three hits all season and has held opposing hitters to a .075 batting average. So far he’s struck out nine batters against only one walk.

ZUBER-STAR!• Arkansas State sophomore starting pitcher Tyler Zuber ran his scoreless innings streak to 14 as

he tossed six shutout innings in A-State’s 2-1 win over Houston Baptist in the second game of a doubleheader last Saturday that clinched the sweep for the Red Wolves. It took Zuber a career-high 95 pitches to navigate the six innings, but he only allowed two hits and had four strikeouts against two walks against the Huskies.

• This season Zuber has solidified the Arkansas State weekend rotation after spending 2014 in the bullpen. The White Hall, Ark., native has now thrown a team-high 19 innings and has only allowed four runs (three earned) with all of the runs coming in his first start. He has a 1.42 ERAwith nine hits allowed, 13 strikeouts, and six walks while holding batters to a .134 average.

• Zuber earned the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week award for his effort against Louisiville on Feb. 21. His performance also caught the eye of College Sports Madness as he was named the publication’s SBC Player of the Week. He was also named a College Baseball 360 Primetime Performer.

GLIDEWELL’S RETURN• A-State redshirt senior Jon Glidewell earned his first career victory in the first game of last

Saturday’s doubleheader (a 13-2 A-State win). The left-hander only needed 76 pitches to get through six innings as he gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts as he improved to 1-0 on the year.

• The A-State bullpen of Cody Jackson, Tanner Kirby, and Adam Grantham threw three scoreless innings to nail down the win for Glidewell, who made just his second start of the season after last pitching in 2012. He missed all of the 2013 and 2014 seasons due to injuries. This season Glidwell has thrown 11.1 innings with a 3.97 ERA with six strikeouts and five walks while holding opposing hitters to a .158 batting average.

OWEN’S STRONG OUTING IN TEXAS• Junior David Owen registered his strongest outing of the season as he improved to 2-1 on the

year after tossing a career-high eight innings against Houston Baptist last Friday. He didn’t allow a single run as he scattered seven hits and recorded five strikeouts against one walk.

• All of A-State’s starters shined in the series against Houston Baptist as they combined to throw 20 innings and only allowed two runs (one earned) on 12 hits. They combined for 11 strikeoutsagainst six walks as the Red Wolves earned their first sweep since sweeping ULM April 18-20 a year ago.  It was also Arkansas State’s first nonconference series sweep since taking all three games from Miami (Ohio) to open the 2014 campaign Feb. 15-16.

POWER SURGE• Arkansas State has hit six home runs through 10 games so far this season after only hitting one

through the first 10 games of last season. Tanner Ring and Jeremy Brown have both hit two each with Austin Baker and Joe Schrimpf adding one apiece to make up the total of six. Last season, Matt Burgess was the only player to have one through the first 10 games, but he made it count as it was a grand slam against Illinois State on Feb. 23.

• Speaking of grand slams, two of A-State’s six homers this season have been with the bases loaded. Joe Schrimpf was the latest as he connected for one in the first game of last Saturday’s doubleheader against Houston Baptist. The Red Wolves were trailing 1-0 in the top of second inning and had loaded the bases with no outs. However, two outs later no one had crossed theplate for the Red Wolves, but Schrimpf brought them all home and shifted the momentum in A-State’s favor as they went on to win the game 13-2.

• The Red Wolves hit three home runs against HBU as Jeremy Brown and Tanner Ring both led offinnings with solo shots for their second home runs of the season. Ring’s came the next inning after Schrimpf’s grand slam to give A-State a 5-1 advantage in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader. Brown led off the top of the fifth inning in game two of the doubleheader with a solo shot to give the Red Wolves a 2-0 edge. That run proved to be the winning run as A-State held on for a 2-1 victory. All in all, the Red Wolves had eight extra base hits and knocked in 17 runs with nine different players registering an RBI against the Huskies.

HISTORY MADE IN GEORGIA• A-State’s series victory over No. 7 Louisville was the first series win over a ranked team since

the 2010 season when the Red Wolves took two out of three games versus 18th-ranked Western Kentucky in Jonesboro. The win also marked the first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 2 Louisiana-Lafayette 6-4 in Jonesboro last season.

• The wins against Louisville also marked the first win against a ranked nonconference foe since

Records also indicate that the series victory over Louisville is the first time Arkansas State has ever won a series against an opponent ranked in the top 10.

SERIES FINALE PERFECTION STARTS AGAIN• A-State’s 2-1 victory over Houston Baptist in the series finale last Saturday starts another streak

of the team winning the final game of a series. The Red Wolves had won 15 straight series finales before falling to Louisville 14-8 in the final contest of a three-game set. However, the 2-1 victory over HBU means that A-State has won 16 of its last 17 series finales dating back to last season.

• Last season, Arkansas State was 14-0 in the final game of every single weekend series the team played. The Red Wolves won the final game in each of its 10 conference series and also took the last game against Miami (Ohio), Illinois State, UAB, and Creighton in nonconference action.

• However, A-State was actually 11-1 in Sunday games a season ago, but the Red Wolves have yetto play on Sunday in 2015 due to weather. The series finale against Illinois State was cancelled due to frigid temperatures and winter weather moving in to the area later that day. The Red Wolves were set to travel to Northwestern State the following weekend for a doubleheader against the Demons and Creighton, but instead opted to play Louisville in Emerson, Ga., for a single game Friday and doubleheader on Saturday with no Sunday game. Arkansas State was supposed to play a Sunday game against HBU, but the threat of rain on that day caused the coaches to agree to play a Saturday doubleheader instead.
