SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES & PRESENTATION ABSTRACTS

Dr. Elie Amm received his dental training and specialty degree in orthodontics at Saint Joseph University in Lebanon. He is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Saint Joseph University and is also a fellow and Instructor at the Charles Tweed International Foundation in Arizona, USA. His main clinical interests are biomechanics, treatment of children in the Tweed philosophy, adults and 2D lingual orthodontics, implant site development and TADs. Dr. Elie Amm is a member of the Angle Society.

There are NO Lingual OrthodontistsThere are only orthodontists and lingual orthodontics should be part of ones daily routine. This presentation will highlight an easy and quick start guide for any orthodontist to incorporate lingual orthodontics into his daily practice where lingual patients will be seen between regular patients. This lecture focuses on fundamental biomechanics and case selection and this will be shown through clinical cases.

The Ortho-Perio InterfaceOrtho and Perio were strangers during school years. Just after graduation they decided that two separate fields in dentistry cannot be “friends”. Twelve years later they ended up together in our daily practice. In the lack of solid evidence-based information, the interrelationship between orthodontics and periodontics can be illustrated with clinical cases.

In our presentation we will point out some aspects of this symbiosis such as the implant site development by tooth movement, and the gingival and alveolar bone alignment.

Dr. Elie Amm

Dr. Woo-Ttum Bittner is a specialist in orthodontics who graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany. He is the founder and CEO of ADENTICS®, a group of orthodontic practices that focus on lingual treatment. Dr. Bittner is Congress President for 2015 for the German Lingual Society (DGLO). He is a chief contributor to the Suresmile® Lingual Clinical Protocol, as the first Suresmile® user for lingual in Europe he has now treated over 500 Suresmile® lingual cases.

Suresmile® Lingual - Bringing Advanced Digital Technology to Lingual TreatmentThis presentation introduces Suresmile® lingual as a comprehensive new treatment option for lingual orthodontics. Suresmile® lingual is a further development of the Suresmile® system, available since 2004 for labial treatment in the US market. Digital tooth and bone models are first created from intraoral scans or from cone beam CTs. The Suresmile® interface enables the doctor to simulate all possible orthodontic treatment options on these digital models, including complex multiphase surgery options, which are supported by digital interaction with the Suresmile® system throughout all stages of treatment. If a cone beam radiograph is available, it is further possible to anticipate realistic bone formation, including single tooth models with roots, allowing consideration of the movement of roots and thus avoiding interferences of roots or conflicts with the cortical bone. The speaker will discuss several cases treated with self-ligating lingual brackets and provide insight into the versatility of the Suresmile® lingual system. In combination with the wide variety of lingual brackets in its database, as well patient-specific, customized archwires manufactured using Suresmile’s proprietary robotic technology, Suresmile® lingual is bringing new levels of sophistication and clinical control to lingual treatment.

Faster, Easier, More Reliable… and Lingual! New Suresmile® Digital Technology Allows Us To Rethink Our Approach To Lingual TherapyFaster, easier, reliable...and more beautiful: the practice of orthodontics is not immune to these increasingly standard demands in our modern world. Now is the time for the orthodontic community to rethink its traditional approaches and become more responsive to customer demands. Finally, as the result of a combination of several well-known appliances, new cutting edge techniques and dynamic digital technology, it is easily possible to adapt traditional lingual treatment to meet the requirements of our patients. Reduced treatment time, self-ligating brackets, piezo-surgery, and improved patient comfort with a newly developed terminal tube have made lingual treatment one of the most requested options in the practices of the speaker. He will also show how lingual treatment time can be reduced efficiently using STL-based positioners and aligners for finishing without loss of precision.

Dr. Steve Stramotas completed a Masters of Science in Dentistry and a Masters Degree in Orthodontics at Sydney University and has a private specialist orthodontic practice in Sydney. He is an Honorary Clinical Associate Lecturer in Orthodontics at the University of Sydney and is currently the President of the Australasian Society of Lingual Orthodontists (ASLO). Dr. Stramotas represents 3M as a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) and is an expert in the use of the Incognito lingual appliance and presents Incognito Certification and refresher courses. He has presented at international dental conferences in the US, Europe and Singapore and has been invited to speak to many different professional groups in Australia. He enjoys treating both children and adults and has a special interest in lingual orthodontics and other forms of aesthetic orthodontic appliances.

Incognito - New Advances Available with the Incognito Lingual Appliance SystemIncognito is a proven system for comprehensive orthodontic management. It is used to treat a wide range of malocclusions with precision and predictability, something that cannot be said for many of the orthodontic appliances available today. Incognito is continually working to uphold its ‘cutting edge’ status in the world of lingual orthodontics, updating the system with new advances to make it more user friendly to improve efficiency, lessen treatment periods and reduce doctor chair time. This lecture will cover all the new advances and discuss their applications.

Dr. Steve Stramotas

Dr. Giuseppe Scuzzo specialized in dentistry in 1987 (Rome University) and orthodontics at Ferrara University. He has always worked exclusively in orthodontics, with a special interest in lingual orthodontics since 1983. Dr. Scuzzo has a private practice limited to lingual orthodontics in Rome, Italy. He has spoken and published extensively in Italy and abroad on lingual orthodontics and together with Dr. Takemoto, gives many lectures and courses all over the world on the ‘STb’ lingual appliance.

Alias System: Part 1, 2 & 3: Superiority of Lingual Straight Wire Method and Square Slot Self-Ligating BracketLingual Straight Wire (LSW) method was developed by Dr. Giuseppe Scuzzo and Dr. Kyoto Takemoto in 2001 and improved in 2010 in order to change traditional lingual orthodontic mushroom archform. The mushroom archform involves complicated handling, arch wire bending, difficulty in mechanics and upper and lower arch-coordination. The new LSW method with the self-ligating bracket design has been introduced to eliminate these faults. This technique using plane archforms reduces archwire bending and the square slot self-ligating bracket gives improved biomechanical rotation and tipping control. Arch coordination is easier and sliding mechanics simplified. LSW, set-up laboratory procedures and customized bonding will offer precise and predictable technical support to the doctor. You will see reduced chair time with fewer appointments and maximum patient comfort. The concept of LSW and a square self-ligating bracket will be presented in detail and shown to contribute to treatment efficiency. The presentation of numerous clinical cases with various orthodontic problems will educate the participating doctors on how to manage and apply this system efficiently.

Dr. Nils Stucki has been in private practice in Berne, Switzerland, since his post-graduate studies were completed at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Berne in 1996. He is a member of SLOA (Treasurer of the Swiss Lingual Orthodontic Association), WSLO (Treasurer of the World Society of Lingual Orthodontics), ESLO (Active Member of the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics), CAIC (Founding Member Clear Aligner International Committee), ALOA (American Lingual Orthodontic Association), KSLO (Korean Society of Lingual Orthodontics), WFO (World Federation of Orthodontists), AAO (American Association of Orthodontics) and SSO (Schweizerische Zahnärztegesellschaft). He lectures nationally and internationally on topics such as lingual orthodontics, eCligner, Clearaligner, Invisalign and microimplants.

A Comparison Between Various Aligner Treatments with Emphasis on the eCligner Technique and the Limitations Between Aligner Versus Lingual Orthodontic Treatment Methods It seems that nowadays the treatment with aligners is the predominant treatment method. Therefore: What is the relevance and importance of aligner therapy in the context of invisible aesthetic methods of treatment? Does it make sense for an orthodontist specialised in lingual orthodontic treatment to offer aligner therapy? Dr. Nils Stucki presents a comparison between the various aligner treatments putting some emphasis on the eCligner method and discusses the limitation of the aligner methods versus lingual orthodontics.

Dr. Nour Eldin Tarraf finished his BDS at Cairo University with Honours in 2001 followed by an orthodontic residency at Cairo University. He then moved to Sydney where he completed his Masters degree in Orthodontics at the University of Sydney in 2008 with Honours. He works in private practice in Chatswood and is involved in research and teaching at the University of Sydney. With his practice composed of 40% adult patients Dr. Tarraf has a special interest in invisible orthodontic techniques such as lingual orthodontics and Invisalign. He also has a keen interest in the clinical applications of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and is currently working towards a PhD on the application of skeletal anchorage in growth modification for growing children.

Incorporating TADs with the Lingual Appliance in Complex Cases In recent years the application of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) has become a part of mainstream orthodontics greatly expanding the envelope of what can be achieved through orthodontic treatment. The inclusion of TADs with lingual orthodontics poses some unique challenges. In addition to the biomechanical considerations for maximum efficiency the aesthetics and comfort of the setup must also be considered. The customized nature of the lingual appliance also makes preplanning the mechanics essential for maximum efficiency. This presentation will show some of the applications of TADs in lingual orthodontics and the Incognito appliance in particular with emphasis on the utilization of mid-palatal TADs for direct and indirect anchorage.

Dr. Nour Eldin Tarraf

Dr. Zieg Weber completed his masters in dentistry in 1983 and has been an active member of the South African Society of Orthodontics since. He was trained using Tweed, Level Anchorage, Creekmore, Bio Progressive and Begg Techniques. He has been in fulltime practice as a specialist orthodontist since qualifying and was a part time postgraduate teacher for a while. With a keen interest in using a lingual approach in the upper arch for obvious cosmetic reasons, Zieg has developed a unique, less complex method for accomplishing this often extremely challenging task. This includes the development of a lingual root torquing auxiliary which allows for direct bracket placement with markedly reduced chair time and no added laboratory costs. Well over 1000 (almost 2000) cases have been treated using this approach.

A Reflection on 21 Years of Lingual Orthodontics: What I Do and Don’t UnderstandAfter more than 30 years of practicing as a full time orthodontist in private practice, the joys and satisfaction of this highly rewarding profession, are often muted by persisting unanswered questions and frustrations. This is even more true when using a lingual as compared to a conventional labial approach. With more than 21 years of experience in lingual orthodontics, some of the questions to be pondered upon include: “Why are there so many different appliances?“, “Is simplicity a possibility?“, “Are extractions a necessary evil?“, “When, if ever does overjet become a goal?“, “Do all teeth need torque control?“. All discussions will be highlighted using lingually treated case presentations.

An Apple a Day Keeps the Paper @ BayAdequate record taking and long-term storage thereof has plagued the orthodontic profession for many years. Having instant access to clinical records at current patient visitations as well as during the long term follow up appointments of treated patients, can present a logistic and administrative nightmare, especially for practitioners having been in practice for a number of years. A simple, cost effective method was developed not only to store and have ready access to patient information, clinical notes, radiographs and photographs, but also to transfer all existing patient records to a digital storage facility using hand held tablets to feed in the information. The system will automatically back up all files loaded to three different locations, making loss of data virtually impossible. It will therefore become possible for an orthodontic practice to become totally paperless not only in respect of new patients as is the current trend, but also in respect of any number of current and treated patients as well.

Dr. Geoffrey Wexler has Batchelor and Master’s Degrees from Melbourne University, the latter in Children’s & Preventive Dentistry. His second Master’s degree was in Orthodontics and his College Entry took him to the University of London & The Eastman Dental Hospital. Dr. Wexler has practiced at Frankston Victoria for 25 years and in Toorak for 12 years. He’s taught clinical photography at the Melbourne University School of Oral health Therapy for 11 years. Geoff’s Lingual Practice began 16 years ago with Stuart McCrostie, He’s been a follower of Scuzzo, Takemoto, Fillion & Wiechmann, whose teachings have influenced him a great deal. Over the last five years Dr. Wexler’s practice has become fully digitalised, with few exceptions. His preferred lingual system is Suresmile Lingual with a large proportion of his patients selecting lingual appliances.

Keys to Delivering the Fastest, Least Expensive and Highest Quality Lingual Orthodontics PossibleThanks to the advancement of digitization over the past four years, the speed and quality of Lingual Orthodontics has dramatically improved, its difficulty is now far less and its enjoyment far more. Orthodontists now have more control and speed than ever before, using these improved digital tools. One key to delivering the fastest, least expensive and highest quality Lingual Orthodontics possible is by consistent, accurate bracket positioning and re-bonding. What is the best way to do this? What are the barriers to achieving these goals? What do we do when teeth and brackets are not where we originally planned?

Dr. Geoffrey Wexler

Dr. Francis Wong gained his Masters degree in orthodontics in Manchester (UK) and has been a practicing orthodontist for over 25 years, contributing skill and expertise to patients and the orthodontic community in Australia. Dr. Wong served on the teaching staff of the Perth Dental Hospital teaching postgraduate dental students. He also formed part of the key clinical teaching staff for orthodontic graduate students at the University of Western Australia for 2 decades. In 1983, he initiated two busy private practices in Perth, WA. After moving to California for a while, he returned in 2008 to Australia’s Gold Coast where Dr. Wong now has 2 orthodontic practices specializing in lingual orthodontics.

Rising to the Challenges of Lingual Orthodontics Raising the Bar of Lingual Orthodontics Using Robotic Technology. Finishing cases with lingual appliances is more dynamic and sometimes more challenging. Suresmile technology provides tools for precision movement and reduction of treatment time.
