CEF Presents Check for $33,600

On January 27, 2015 at the Centennial School District Board of School Director’s meeting, Mr. Robert

Phillips, president of the Centennial Education Foundation presented a check for $33,600 to Dr. Joyce

Mundy, Centennial School District Superintendent of Schools.

The funds are to be used to support the District’s initiative in developing college and career readiness

through career pathways in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and STEAM

(science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) programs for students district-wide.

The District’s focus for this initiative is to provide practical educational experiences to students in

STEM and STEAM. Through partnerships with corporations and universities, the District can create

real-world experiences in fields of study, industry, and entrepreneurial pursuits. This “in-sourcing”

allows students to explore careers in science, industry, technology, and business through authentic pro-

ject-based learning. Both programs encourage an inquiry-based, hands-on curriculum that closely

matches what a student will experience in college and the workforce.

The Centennial Educational Foundation funding is being provided via the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit program (EITC). The EITC

provides a tax credit for businesses that make donations to non-profit (501c3) organizations, such as CEF, to supplement programs like STEM and STEAM,

as well as other enrichments to the regular school curriculum. Since 1997, the CEF has raised more than $600,000 in grants that are awarded to educators in

the Centennial School District, providing supplemental funding to classroom projects that may otherwise not exist. CEF is independent of the school district

and relies solely on donations and fund-raising.

L to R: CEF Board members, Dr. Albert Catarro, Wayne

McCulloch, Mark McKee, Christine Bailey Alff, Bob Phil-

lips and School Board President, Jane Lynch along with

Dr. Joyce Mundy.
