SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
Airline senior Shelbi Chadick serves in a game earlier this season.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
When Shelbi Chadickmoved with her family toBossier City from Wyo-ming five years ago, vol-leyball action in area highschools was non-existent.
Flash forward to the2015 season and the areasaw 12 area varsity teamsin action in two divisions.Chadick, a senior at Air-
line, not only helped pushthe sport forward at herschool with her friendHeather Gmys, she wasvoted the 2015 All-RegionPlayer of the Year by localvolleyball coaches.
“Between her years ofcompetitive volleyball ex-perience prior to attend-ing Airline and through-out her high school career,Shelbi brought to the tablenot only talent, but exten-sive knowledge of thegame,” Airline coach Reg-gie Digilormo said. “Peo-ple truly enjoyed watch-ing her compete. She dis-played both powerful at-
tacks and an aggressivedefense that motivatedgirls on our team andthroughout our communi-ty to attempt to recreatethe skills and competitivespirit that she modeled.”
Chadick, who playedthe sport in school or atthe club level for 10 years, said seeing the sport growin the area was the high-
light of her volleyball ca-reer.
“Playing at all the areaschools was really neat.Volleyball is really pick-ing up in Louisiana,” saidChadick, who posted 165kills, 67 aces and 208 digson the season for the LadyVikings.
As part of her seniorproject at Airline, Chad-ick worked with her men-tor on physical therapy,
something she’d like topursue as a career, learn-ing to properly tape anathlete’s ankle.
“I learned that if youdon’t cut the tape in strips, you can cut off their cir-culation when you applyit,” she said.
Chadick, who attendsFirst Baptist Church of
Bossier City, also partici-pates in drama club as aLady Viking and has beenin the school’s talentedarts program. She choreo-graphed some dance num-bers for a school program.
Playing travel volley-ball with her NorthwesternLouisiana club teamhelped her expand herfriendship with folks likeEmiline Hoskins, a formerHaughton player who is
now a freshman at BPCC.Chadick isn’t sure whatthe future holds for hervolleyball career.
“I do miss it already. If Igo to Louisiana Tech, I planto try to play there, but if Igo to LSUS, I’ll just play in-tramural,” she said.
