IAPO will help international students with application procedures, application deadlines, visa requirements and international tuition fees. Queries relating to academic qualifications and specific course requirements must be directed to the relevant faculty office. Prospective undergraduate international students who intend to study for a degree at UCT, or international students who intend to study at UCT for only one or two semesters, must apply online. studY visas

In terms of the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and are not a South African citizen or do not have permanent residence, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic for the purpose of attending the University. The offer of a study place by the University does not bind the Department of Home Affairs in any way to allow you to study in South Africa, nor does it remove the need for you to obtain permission to enter the country. If you are offered a study place please apply immediately for a study visa. Your application must be made to the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. This procedure could take up to 8 weeks. The application form BI-1738, duly completed, must be accompanied by the following:(a) Valid passport(b) A fee (current details are available from the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission)(c) an official letter from UCT confirming provisional acceptance at the institution and the duration of the course(d) in the case of a person under the age of 21 years. (i) the particulars of the person in the Republic who will act as that learner’s guardian and a confirmatory letter from that intended guardian; and (ii) proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or from the custodian parent, along with proof of sole custody in the latter case(e) a police clearance certificate(f) medical and radiological reports(g) documents relating to marital status if applicable(h) a yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic area(i) in the case of a foreign state accepting responsibility for the applicant in terms of a bilateral agreement, a written undertaking in respect of the departure of the applicant(j) proof of medical cover with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 1998 (Act No. 131 of 1998), or other medical insurance cover recognised in the Republic (access www.medicalschemes.com for a list of medical schemes recognised in South Africa)(k) proof of sufficient financial means(l) payment of a deposit: Provided that such deposit shall be refunded to the depositor after the final departure of the applicant or after a permit contemplated in section 25 of the Act has been issued to the applicant: Provided further that the payment of the deposit may be effected by means of a bank guaranteed cheque or credit card at places where such facility exists.

(m) In the case of students from Africa, the payment of the deposit shall not be required: Provided that the Government of the relevant African country submits a written undertaking to pay all costs relating to the deportation of the student, should this become necessary.(n) Other requirements as may be prescribed by the Consulate/Embassy.

We recommend that you contact the nearest South African Consulate/Embassy before sending in your visa application, in order to find out exactly what documents are needed, because requirements may change. It is very important that your study visa is valid for studies at the University of Cape Town. If you have studied at another South African University or attended high school in South Africa, your study visa needs to be changed for studies at the University of Cape Town.

International students residing within South Africa will not be able to register unless in possession of a valid study visa and proof of medical cover. International students (Master’s and Doctoral students) living outside South Africa during the academic year may be registered by the University without having to apply for a study visa. Such students need to obtain a suitable visa when visiting UCT and their supervisors, and on arrival in Cape Town must report to IAPO with details of their visa.

Your application status We will publish your applicaton status online. You should monitor your application status online. After consideration of your application, one of the following statuses may apply:

• Decision Deferred: this means that, at the time of considering your application, we are not ready to make you an offer of admission. In order to make you an offer of admission, we may await your NBT results, stronger school examination results, predicted scores, etc. A deferred decision does not mean that your application is unsuccessful.

• Conditional Offer: this means that we are offering you a place with conditions, which are included in the offer letter that you will receive from us. Your offer of a place is confirmed only when you meet these conditions. You need to establish the final status before arriving at UCT for registration in 2015.

• Firm Offer: this means that you are offered a place without conditions.

• Waitlisted: this means that a final decision on your application will be taken when we have further information about the entire pool of applicants. This additional information will allow us to assess your application in relation to others.

• Denied: your application was unsuccessful.

A typical application will have various statuses throughout the application cycle. It is important to monitor your application status.

It is possible to hold offers of admission for both of your choices. If, in January 2015 or before, you are made two firm offers of admission, we will communicate with you, and require you to go online to select one of the programmes. Your application to the other will be withdrawn once you decide.

CODE TABLES TO BE USED WHEN COMPLETING YOUR PAPER APPLICATION

NB: With the exception of the specialisation in Actuarial Science, the minimum entry requirements for all specialisations in the BCom and BBusSc degrees are the same. You should thus list two choices in Commerce only if one of them is Actuarial Science.

It is easy to swap from one BBusSc or BCom specialisation to another in first year. It may seem to you that you can only swap BCom to BCom, when you can actually also swap BCom to BBusSc. This means that you only need to choose one BCom or BBusSc specialisation at the time of your application. You can change between these qualifications and specialisations (except Actuarial Science) when you register.
