MED: MED: Did you choose your engineering design career, or did it choose you?

ALICIA: ALICIA: I would have to say my engineering design career chose me. As a

child I knew that I had a love and a talent for art. I was always told I had

something special. Entering into my college years I wasn’t quite sure how to

implement my skills into as actual career. I initially chose interior design, but

after graduating and working in that field for a couple years I realized it was-

n’t for me. I needed something less cosmetic and superficial and something

a little more substantial. I returned to school with the idea I’d just add more

skills to my resume by getting certified on mechanical and architectural

drafting. I fell in love. I not only saw the beauty in things, I saw the function

as well. From that point on I knew I was a mechanical designer.

MED: MED: How do you feel about working with your co-workers in the MED

department?

ALICIA: ALICIA: I absolutely love my co-workers. I have never had an experience

like this in the past. I feel as if I am constantly surrounded by friends and

family. We have great communication and team morale is always shown in a

positive light. There is obviously a conscious effort to assist and build each

other up, for we understand we are all in this together.

MED: MED: How do you balance family and professional life?

ALICIA: ALICIA: Balancing family and professional life is always and will forever be

the inevitable struggle. I have been truly blessed to have great support sys-

tems through family and friends. They allow me the flexibility I need in order

to juggle my day to day activities. ESI has been gracious enough to allow

flexible hours as well. Finding and making time to get things done is always

possible.

MED: MED: How do you relax after a long day at the office?

ALICIA: ALICIA: I like to relax after a long day at the office by spending some quiet

time alone. With the fast pace of the office and the type of work that we do,

it is nice to be able to find some time to slow things down. Reflection, medi-

tation, and preparation allows me to not become overwhelmed, and it helps

to put things into perspective.

BRIAN???

Page 11: 2015 Employee Appreciation and Family Day Program

MED: MED: Did you choose your engineering design career, or did it choose you?

BRIAN:BRIAN: I was 20 years old and still living in my parents basement and real-

ized that if I wanted to make something of my life I needed to go to college.

At the time computers were just a hobby and gaming was a way to escape

reality. I then saw a commercial for the ITT-TECH CAD program and realized

that I should put my computer skills to use. While in school I was able to

land my first job with an engineering firm where I learned civil and mechani-

cal engineering design. So I would say we choose each other.

MED:MED: How would you describe the MED department?

BRIAN:BRIAN: Working with this group of mechanical design engineers has been

an absolute pleasure. They are a bunch of hard working, likeminded people

with the goal of making our Boss look good. The group has a mix of many

different personalities, that somehow seems to click very well. The group

has had many training sessions now on the work we do so our contribution

to the company is the greatest.

MED: How do you balance family and professional life?

( funny answer – I moved 700+ miles away from my family so I only have to

deal with them about twice a year for approximately 6 days total, which is a

good balance. Personal life? What’s that?)

BRIAN: I am originally from the Buffalo NY area, and most of my family still

lives there. The relative that lives closest to me now is my sister, she lives in

Charlotte NC. I do travel up north to visit family and childhood friends a cou-

ple times a year, as long as there is no snow.

MED:MED: How do you relax after a long day at the office?

BRIAN:BRIAN: One of the first things I do when I get home is take my dog for a

walk. The walk allows me to clear me head and start the winding down pro-

cess. Then it’s time to escape reality. Whether it’s through video games,

board games or comic books, I’ll do anything to start thinking about a fanta-

sy world. I have a very active and creative imagination, and if I can’t tame

my mind, I might as well try to tame a dragon.

LETTER FROM THE MANAGER…..

Welcome to the 2nd Employee Appreciation and Family Day Event.

First, I would like to thank everyone who attended the 2013 event for

returning, and a special welcome to first time attendees.

I’m often asked why do I take the time to put together an

appreciation event for my team. Most of the time I simply respond

“why not?” It’s no secret to me my success depends on the success of

my team. So the way I see it, it’s the least I could do for such fine

professionals.

Since our last event in 2013, the Mechanical Design Department (MED)

grew a lot stronger and wiser. For example, Steve Stern was

promoted to Mechanical Design Supervisor, charged with managing the daily operations of the

department. This was the first such promotion since the inception of the department in 2011, and I’m

looking forward to handing out more promotions in the near future. Intern Julian Cunningham

accepted a full-time position with the department and proving to be a productive member of our team.

Gennady Kogan put together a series of lunch and learn sessions on the basics of “Steam and Power

Design”, which truly enhanced designs skills. Jerry Hamilton was selected to the Autodesk Plant 3D

Design Council making ESI the only American engineering firm to be invited. These are just a few

examples of how the team grows and continually strives for design excellence.

TO THE MECHANICAL DESIGN TEAM, THANK YOU!! I sincerely appreciate your hard work and

commitment to our department vision, which enables management to believe in me, just as much as I

believe in you. A special shout out to Gennady, Steve and Alicia. You guys have stood by me since 2011

and now working on your 5th year, setting a very good example for the rest of the team. I have

nothing but love and respect for each of you with all my heart. I look forward to even greater things for

you in the future.

TO THE FAMILIES of these wonderful employees honored this afternoon, your support during our busy

times is greatly appreciated and not taken for granted. I appreciate you coming to help me celebrate

your loved one who work in the department. Thanks for your support!!

GOD BLESS,

Demetrius Franklin
