John P. Horn is Professor of Neurobiology and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. He earned an A.B. in chemistry from Brandeis University and a Ph.D. in physiology & biophysics from the University of Miami. After postdoctoral fellowships in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School with Stephen Kuffler and Torsten Wiesel, Dr. Horn joined the University of Pittsburgh as an Assistant Professor. In Pittsburgh, Dr. Horn has taught medical and graduate students for over thirty years. He has also served as vice-chair of the medical school curriculum committee and contributed to the development and administration of the University of Pittsburgh’s campus-wide Ph.D. program in Neuroscience. In his current role as Associate Dean, Dr. Horn chairs the medical school’s graduate council and is responsible for 300 Ph.D. students in 12 biomedical training programs, 6 of which operate under an Interdisciplinary umbrella (www.somgrad.pitt.edu) that he directs. Dr. Horn is known for his research on synaptic transmission, neuromodulation by acetylcholine, catecholamines and neuropeptides, and the integrative function of sympathetic ganglia. His work combines cellular electrophysiology with anatomy and computational methods. Recent work has focused on mechanisms that regulate synaptic amplification of activity in sympathetic ganglia and the relation of these mechanisms to blood pressure control and hypertension. His honors include an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, an NIH Research Career Development Award and numerous grants from the NIH and the American Heart Association. Dr. Horn is past-president of the International Society for Autonomic Neuroscience. In the recent Vth edition of the ‘Principles of Neuroscience’ textbook edited by Kandel et al., John Horn and Larry Swanson wrote the chapter on the Autonomic Motor System and Hypothalamus.
