Findings:
Manual blasting process for field joint coating:
• A common used technique for the steel surface preparation on onshore projects
• A quality critical and time consuming process
• Major impact on the health and safety of our skilled personnel and on the environment
• Major impact on the planning and overall cost of an onshore project
Solution:
Onshore automatic vacuum blasting unit for large diameters:
• Installed on the pipeline under construction and moved from joint to joint
• Applying ‘closed loop’ vacuum blasting with reuse of efficient abrasives
• Completely automated and remote controlled process
Achievements:
• Development and successful implementation of the innovative technique on several onshore projects in range ND900 – ND1400
• Less risks and hazards on Health & Safety as the dust production is completely eliminated and the process is fully automated
• No contamination of the environment due to the vacuum ‘closed loop’ blasting technique
• Proven quality up to Sa 3 cleanliness grade
Achievements:
• High production rates up to 80 field joints ND1400 on 10-hours production
• Blasting cycle-time of only 5 minutes for field joint ND1400
• Reduction of skilled personnel
• Cost reduction on direct costs field joint coating
• Cost reduction on indirect and general costs due to shorter lead time of onshore projects
