Having a Baby in Iwakuni? What Are My Options?Delivering a baby in Japan can be a confusing and complicated experience.Shortly after the realization you are expecting, the next question arrives: Should I deliver locally in Iwakuni with Dr. Shoji or travel to Yokosuka to deliver my baby at the Naval Hospital there? This question can be very pressing and not easily answered. Every person/couple is different and makes their choice based on individual factors. No one can make the decision for you, but to provide a little guidance here are a few responses from individuals who delivered a baby either with Dr. Shoji in Iwakuni or traveled to Yokosuka.
What was your overall impression of the facility you delivered in?
How would you describe your overall experience?“I had a very pleasant experience.
Staying in Iwakuni was a great decision
for our growing family because of the
amazing network of help offered to us
throughout our days at the hospital.
Johanna Gilbert provided much needed
advice as the base lactation consultant,
and the Branch Health Clinic sent out
their Nurse on Call on a daily basis to
check on us and explain anything that
may have gotten lost in translation.”
-Ericka Grygowski
“For me, Dr. Shoji, the other doctor, and
the other nurses will go out of their way
to make sure I was taken care of.”
-Sarah Nelson
Where did you deliver?
“After discussing it
my husband and I
decided to deliver
with Dr. Shoji.”
Sarah Nelson
“Dr. Shoji's in
Iwakuni”
Ericka Grygowski
“We chose to deliver
our first child, in
Yokosuka.”
Melinda Kimble
“Yokosuka.”
2nd LT Ali Peterson
Why did you chose to deliver where you did?“My husband is gone a lot with the command he is in. We decided it would be less taxing on our relationship if we went through the whole prenatal /delivery process in town. That way, he could, in my opinion, make it to some of the more critical appointments more easily. I also work on base teaching dance so I didn't want to interrupt the classes either” -Ericka Grygowski
“Mainly for the purpose of understanding since this was our first child. We did
not want to have complications and not understand what was happening. We
also prefer the expected level of care provided by Naval Medicine.” -Ali Peterson
photo by United States Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan
“Above and beyond what I expected.
The staff was helpful and provided
excellent care.” -Ali Peterson
“Yokosuka was beyond what we could have asked for. Caring, intelligent staff;
accommodating to our needs and desires. For our delivery, there were three doctors
on call, including the pediatric specialist, in case our daughter needed extra help.
Every one of them made us feel comfortable and let us know they were more than
happy to be there and did not seemed burdened by the extra time.”
-Melinda Kimble

by Deanna O’Neal, NMCRSHaving a Baby in Iwakuni? What Are My Options?Would you deliver at this location again?
More questions will come up while you are expecting. MCAS Iwakuni has numerous resources to assist expecting and new parents with all their questions and more. The NPSP offers classes in taking care of baby and also provides tours of the local medical facilities. WIC provides one-on-one nutrition guidance and vouchers for healthy food for those who qualify. The NMCRS provides classes in dealing with the financial aspects of adding a new addition to your family and also provides free in-home visits from our Visiting Nurse to support breastfeeding and answer all baby related questions. The Branch Health Clinic provides hands-on childbirth education classes focusing on labor and delivery, postpartum, and breastfeeding. MCAS Iwakuni has more resources than many realize. On January 24 10 AM - 3 PM, all of these organizations and more will come together at the 3rd annual MCAS Iwakuni Baby Expo. The Baby Expo is a one-stop shop for all things baby and child related. Even if you are not expecting, you can attend to find out information on all aspects of having a child in Iwakuni. Call 253-4408 to register now.

coming. They speak enough English to
ask the important questions: how far
apart are contractions, how long have
you been having them, etc. We got there
and were escorted in and brought to the
room that we would be staying in. We
chose to get a personal room and not
a group room. She asked me to double
check my birth plan, which I had given
Dr. Shoji the week prior, and she took
my and my baby’s vitals. After that, we
were left to labor on our own for a bit.”-
Ericka Grygowski
“We're delivering in Iwakuni this time for
convenience not because we didn't love Yokosuka.”
-Melinda Kimble
“Yokosuka knew
we were coming
in pr ior to our
arrival and when
we a r r ived at
the hospital, we
checked in with
the OB admin staff. They had our
entire package ready to go, key in hand.
Appointments were already made and
any additional were easily added. All
we had to be was sit back in the stork’s
nest and wait.” -Melinda Kimble
“I did! I had another baby 14 months later!”
-Sarah Nelson
“I would not hesitate to deliver with Dr. Shoji again.”
- Ericka Grygowski
“Absolutely!” -Ali Peterson
Anything else you would like to share with others making a choice on where to deliver their baby?
“Overall, we had a wonderful experience with Yokosuka and would highly recommend it. We had a wonderful team that followed our every wish down to the birth plan. We felt supported and comfortable. Our Iwakuni experience was not always bright and shiny; however, our assigned Doctor in Iwakuni was great and we do miss him.” -Melinda Kimble
“Moms and dads just need to know if they
decide to deliver with Dr. Shoji that they
take care of you and they know what they
are doing. If they didn't know the base
wouldn't have a contract with them.”
-Sarah Nelson
“Have a birth plan translated into
Japanese. Be open minded. Every culture
has slightly different medical practices
and standards. Dr. Shoji seems like a very
serious and scary man, but he loves his
job and he will giggle if you manage to
crack a funny joke. It was wonderful to
have friends be able to come and visit
while we were still in the hospital. Since
my husband stayed with us the entire
time, they brought him food and snacks.”
-Ericka Grygowski
“I would highly recommend Yokosuka. The staff was amazing which made the delivery process easy, especially with this being our first baby. I felt comfortable with the fact that if there was an emergency they had the facilities and staff that could handle it. Also if advance care were required the local hospital was closer than Hiroshima, which would have especially been important if I would have needed to travel there every day.”-Ali Peterson

Snow FestivalsIN JAPANOne of our favorite things about living in Japan is the opportunity to experience many of its unique festivals which take place throughout the year. After living in Japan for nearly six years (three in Okinawa and three in Iwakuni), we still have not seen it all despite our best effort to travel wherever and whenever it was possible. One of the things we have not done is a winter trip to visit one of Japan’s numerous snow festivals. Here are some that made it to our wish list.
WHEN: Selected Saturdays and Sundays in January LOCATION: Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture
The best time to view UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go is arguably in the winter, when the picturesque village is covered in a blanket of snow. While not a snow festival, on certain nights in January and February, the well-preserved gassho-zukuri style
farmhouses are illuminated. Visitors can walk through the village or trek up to the view point; however, access to the village can be difficult
due to heavy snowfall and accommodations are limited.

WHEN: February LOCATION: Sapporo, Hokkaido
Hailed as one of the biggest winter events in Japan, this festival attracts over two million visitors each year. For seven days in February, Sapporo becomes a winter wonderland of ice and snow sculptures, snow mazes and slides. To avoid the crowds, it is possible to view the statues and sculptures before the official start date of
the festival. However, it is worth noting that (according to the official website), the statues and sculptures are destroyed the day after the
official end date of the festival for safety reasons.
Sapporo Snow Festival
WHEN: 2nd Saturday and Sunday of February LOCATION: Iiyama, Nagano Nagano, well known as a haven for winter sport enthusiasts, boasts some of the highest accumulation of snowfalls in Japan. In February, the city of Iiyama hosts a snow festival featuring not only snow sculptures but also a fire dance and a shrine procession in the snow.
Iiyama Snow Festival
WHEN: Early February LOCATION: Abashiri, Hokkaido
In the winter, Abashiri is famous for, among other attractions, boat cruises on ice breaking boats to view wildlife and endless miles of ice and snow on the frozen sea of Okhotsk. Early February is a great time to visit, as it coincides with
the Abashiri Okhotsk Drift Ice Festival, where elaborate ice-sculptures are
illuminated in the evenings.
Abashiri Okhotsk Drift Ice Festival
WHEN: February 15th & 16th every year LOCATION: Yokote, Akita Prefecture Dating back over 400 hundred years, this festival features one-room snow huts, or kamakura, that are built across the city. Along the river bank, there are hundreds of small kamakura
illuminated by candles in the evenings.

The best way to experience Japan is to take your time and explore it, but if you leave Iwakuni for more than a day, you’ll need a place to crash for the night. You can book yourself in a regular hotel, but why not try something different? Something a bit more Japanese.
Several options are available for your overnight pleasure. Here are some traditional and unique places you can spend the night while you’re in Japan.
Stay in a traditional Japanese hotelTraditional Japanese hotels can vary widely. Some are small, Mom and Pop bed-and-breakfast type places (called minshuku). Some can be larger (ryokans), almost hotel-like chains. They can be expensive or cheap, depending on where you go and at what time of year you’re going. But they normally have a few things in common.
If you stay at a ryokan or minshuku, you’ll sleep the old-fashioned way: on a futon spread out in a tatami room. When you first enter the room, you’ll usually see a table laid out with a tea service and cakes. Towards the evening, maybe after you’ve gone to the communal bath, you’ll come back to find that the table has been pushed aside and the futons are laid on the tatami mats, ready for bedtime.
Most ryokans have a public bath, and most also serve an optional dinner and breakfast. Try the full dinner at least once! The presentation of these meals, and the unique fla-vors, are worth the price.
We’ve stayed at cheap minshukus for 4,000 yen a person, and at the fancier ryokans at anywhere from ¥12,000 to ¥25,000 per person, so the services and price can vary, de-pending on where you’re staying, the amenities, and the season.

Try a Capsule HotelI have to admit, I haven’t tried this one yet. A capsule hotel room pretty much has a bed in it, and maybe a small TV. This one definitely won’t do for a family, but if you’re a single traveler, it might be a cheap way to go!
HostelsIf you’re a young ‘un, or even a bit older, try a youth hostel. These are cheap, between ¥2,000 to ¥4,500 a night. You’ll crash in a room with bunks or futons, and have a shared toilet, but it is definitely a cheap way to go.
Western StyleIf you crave a western bed, you can always go the western style way. Big chains, as well as Pensions (kind of like a minshuku but with a western bed) will keep you cozy.
Don’t forget the business hotels. We stay in them often when we travel; they’re cheap-er than the big chains, and although the rooms are small, sometimes these little hotels will surprise you. The last one we stayed at (the Green Rich Hotel at Yuda Springs in Yamaguchi) had a full massage chair in the room. They also served a breakfast and gave us coupons to use the wonderful public bath half a block away. We spent about ¥8,000 for the two of us per night.
However you decide to travel, DO travel!! Japan is a wonderful country to explore, and there’s a hotel to fit every budget. You can contact ITT for more information on hotel prices and reservations. Several websites also offer bookings for ryokans and other hotels.
CampingCamping is always an option when you travel, although camping in Japan is very sea-sonal. Most camping locations have places where you can pitch a tent, or you can rent cabins for the night. Even camping in Japan can be pricey, however. Cabins can run as high as ¥15,000 per night, and tent spots are usually anywhere from ¥2,000 to ¥4,000 depending on the season and location.

Sleep in a Buddhist Temple (shukubo)Next to a traditional ryokan, this is my favorite. Staying in a shukubo is very much like a ryokan, except instead of ladies dressed in kimono, the monks will take care of you. Normally, the setup is similar: you’ll stay in a small tat-ami room, with or without a private bathroom (this can vary; the ones we’ve stayed at have all been public bathrooms) and the monks will serve you din-ner and breakfast.
At the temples we’ve visited, the food was vegetarian and wonderful. The friendly monks served us on small serving trays and we sat on cushions to eat. Some temples are set in breathtaking locations, like Mt. Koya, the sa-cred mountain that everyone should try to visit before they leave Japan.
Prices can be comparable to ryokans, but usually don’t get quite as expen-sive as the high-end ones.

Exploring Scholarship Options in Iwakuni
Are you looking to continue your education while being stationed thousands of miles away from the States? Hopefully it does not come as a surprise to you, but Iwakuni has several options for making long distance continuing education affordable, including a local scholarship offered to dependent spouses and graduating seniors.
A first stop for many interested in continuing their education while on MCAS Iwakuni is the Education Office in Building 411. The education office can
“help with searching for education and
training options, including methods for
finding the right schools and/or training
opportunities, advice on programs, and
strategies to best make people’s goals
into realities,” says Eric Drummond, the
education specialist on MCAS Iwakuni.
Drummond says the education office assists
service members, dependents and civilians
with the “step-by-step process for going to
college or getting skills while stationed
here in Japan and beyond. Additionally,
the office will advise individually to assist
anyone who needs help or guidance.” The
office will also provide guidance on how
to apply to not only federal financial aid,
but also scholarships---a resource usually
overlooked by hopeful students.
“Millions of dollars in available scholarships
go unused every year. Most students never
even look for a scholarship to help fund
their education,” says Drummond.
One scholarship program designed
specifically for the residents of MCAS
Iwakuni is offered by the Officer’s Spouses
Club of Iwakuni. Since 2004, the OSC has
offered all graduating seniors and active
duty dependent spouses an opportunity to
apply to three scholarships.
Currently, the OSC scholarships are
awarded to two graduating seniors from
MC Perry and one active duty dependent
spouse with each scholarship totaling
$2,000. However, Jamie Savarese, the
current OSC president, says this year the
OSC has chosen to push harder and raise
more money in order to create a new
scholarship.
“VMFA-242 and the Iwakuni community said goodbye to one of their own, Reid Nannen, this past March,” said Savarese. “With this in mind, OSC approached Reid’s wife Sarah with the opportunity to offer another scholarship award in Reid’s name with specific qualifications for the recipient.”
To meet their goals of adding another
scholarship, Savarese hopes to get the word
out about the scholarships and increase the
amount being fundraised. OSC’s biggest
fundraiser for the scholarships is Wilson's
Auction, a silent, live auction of one-of-kind
furniture, jewelry and decor from all over
the world.
“Wilson's Auction is a great chance to leave
Iwakuni, Japan with a one of a kind piece
that will be cherished for years to come,”
said Savarese. It’s also a great chance for
the community to “get involved and give
back to the amazing dependents on this
base by participating in the auction.”
The OSC begins accepting applications for
their scholarships April and recipients are
usually notified in the May.
According to Drummond, service members
and their families have nothing to lose
by applying to as many financial aid
opportunities as possible.
“The worst thing that can happen when applying to a scholarship is that one’s current situation did not change at all and the best case is that they discover that they get it,” he says. “What that means is that there is every reason to try and no real reason not to.”

“The year 2015 brings both promise and innovation ...”
The Chinese New Year is
symbolized by an animal in
its yin or yang form, along with
one of five elements. These elements
are earth, fire, metal, water and wood.
On February 19, 2015 the year of the
Wood Sheep will take its place on the
throne embodying its yin form, and
relieving the 2014 Year of the Horse
from its role. The year 2015 brings
both promise and innovation. This
year, encourage your altruistic side
and take part in the Year of the Sheep.
It is the year to redirect and focus on
giving back to others and creating a
humbling and refocused environment
for you and loved ones. Sheep
individuals are loyal and trustworthy.
Be a great friend, remain accountable
to yourself and others, and don’t be
afraid to adapt to new situations. Have
you been thinking about traveling
around Japan but haven’t been
motivated enough to do so? Swing by
the Cultural Adaptation Office now
located in the Library and sign up for
your next tour.
Start the New Year by sprucing up the
home with elements that correlate
with wood. In a wood year it is favorable
to bring plants, flowers, or bamboo
into the home for an uplifting feel.
Wood also associates with the kitchen,
for wood fuels the cooking fire. Break
through the barriers that may hold
you back, and obtain the year of the
sheep’s motivation and adaptability
by trying out a new meal or cooking
as a family. People who obtain strong
levels of the wood element have a
clearer vision towards the path of
obtaining their goals. Cleaning out
the front porch and entryway to the
home is also welcoming to all the good
fortunes, love, and support that others
will bring during this year.
Sheep access and utilize their artistic
minds. In doing this, they develop
a stronger enthusiasm for creating
beautiful things and beauty in itself.
Obtaining beauty in its raw form can
be done by first replenishing your
mind, body, and soul. Attending a
yoga class at the Ironworks gym or
relaxing in the sauna could provide
a clear conscience and a better grip
on indecisive decisions you have had
in the past year. A relaxing massage
could also produce a refocused
outlook on future decisions. Adhere to
the humble side of the sheep as well
and purchase a massage for a friend
or loved one.
If a new family member is to be joining
you in their Benming Nian, or year of
birth, the new bundle of joy will bring
gaiety to the lives of those all around.
Traits such as loyalty, reservation,
happiness, art ist ic abil ity, and
kindness will flow from these children
as they age. Some famous individuals
who have been born in the year of the
sheep include Michelangelo, Mark
Twain, Thomas Edison, and Julia
Roberts.
Turn the pages of the calendar and dive into a great outlook of the 2015 fiscal year. Make the decision to live this year in hopes of a creating a better tomorrow. Create a peaceful environment for yourself and those around you by fulfilling the dreams you have set aside and successfully conquering the challengesahead. The year of theWood Sheepis on yourside.
