For applicants who have fulfilled the minimum entrance requirements, admission scores are calculated for use in admission selection.

The information contained here is based on the admission scores (with weighting applied where appropriate) of offered applicants in the JUPAS main round admission exercise. Sample cases of students having the same median and lower quartile scores are presented for reference. Students admitted through special admission routes (other experiences and achievements, principal's nominations, sports talents, disabled applicants and Home Affairs Bureau Multi-Faceted Excellence Scholarship) are not included in the calculation of scores.

Students are reminded that because of the different weightings adopted, the admission scores are not comparable across programmes and different admission years. The sample cases are for reference only and should not be used to predict the chance of admission. The selection criteria vary each year, and many types of scores are used in the selection process. In addition to public examination results, other factors (such as band choices, interview performance, etc.) may also be considered.

Selection Criteria

We adopt a holistic approach in the assessment of applicants' suitability for teacher education and

other complementary discipline programmes. In selecting students for our full-time undergraduate

and higher diploma programmes, we take into account their public examination results, band

choices, non-academic achievements, school principal's recommendations and interview

performance etc. For entry to the specific programmes like Chinese, English, Mathematics, Music,

Physical Education and Visual Arts, applicants have to demonstrate a required level of competence

in the subject area. For example, applicants for Mathematics major should possess Level 3 or above

in HKDSE Mathematics (Compulsory Part) and Level 2 or above in Module 1 or Module 2 of

Mathematics (Extended Part).

Students nominated under the JUPAS School Principal's Nominations Scheme (SPN) and the

Institute's Undergraduate Programme Nominations Scheme will be considered favourably with good

school reference reports and interview performance.

HKDSE Admission Scores

Bachelor's Degree Programmes

The HKDSE admission scores for degree programmes are the sum total of the level/grade values of

the best four core subjects (i.e. Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, and Liberal

Studies) plus one elective subject.

Higher Diploma Programme

The HKDSE admission score for higher diploma programme is the sum total of the level/grade values

of the best five subjects, including Chinese Language and English Language. A maximum of two

Applied Learning subjects will be counted.

Subject levels/grades are converted into numeric values according to the following scoring system:

Explanatory Note on the Calculation of Average HKDSE Scores

From 2013-14 onwards, one of the following mechanisms is adopted for calculating the average HKDSE

scores for Bachelor’s Degree programmes:

O 4X + 1 Best Elective: The 4 core subjects including Chinese Language, English Language,

Mathematics and Liberal Studies, plus the "best" elective subject will be taken into account.

O Any Best 5 Subjects: The "best" 5 HKDSE subjects will be taken into account.

O Chinese & English Languages + Any Best 3 Subjects: Chinese Language and English Language, plus

any 3 "best" subjects will be taken into account.

For Higher Diploma programmes, the Chinese & English Languages + Any Best 3 Subjects mechanism is

used. The average HKDSE score point total of admittees is calculated based on their results in Chinese,

English and 3 other subjects which have the best results.

When calculating the average HKDSE scores, subject weighting is not applied and HKDSE level attainments

are converted to level points as follows:

O Core and Elective Subjects

5** = 7, 5* = 6, 5 = 5, 4 = 4, 3 = 3, 2 = 2, 1 = 1 and Unclassified = 0

O Applied Learning Subjects:

Attained with Distinction (accepted as Level 3 at HKDSE) = 3,

Attained = 0 (applicable to Bachelor’s Degree programmes only),

Attained (accepted as Level 2 at HKDSE) = 2 (applicable to Higher Diploma programmes only)

O Other Languages:

A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, Others = 0
