Describe your/the co-op's role in the project *

Mark Justice was in charge managing the entire week's events.

Mark Justice built relationships with 10 different authors and/or illustrators and booked them to visit 34 schoolsthroughout the week. Mark identified schools that could benefit from author visits, specifically, Title I schools.

Mark planned and executed a kick-off dinner for all of the participating schools' media specialists and the authors.Mark also facilitated a panel discussion at the dinner between four of the authors and the audience about the state ofliteracy in education today.

Andrew Herdeg, Cobb EMC creative design specialist, designed all promotional materials for the event, including acrewneck sweatshirt, pop-up banners, vinyl outdoor banners, and mini-banners the author signed for door prizes atthe kick-off dinner. Andrew Herdeg also video-recorded several of the authors' presentations throughout the weekand developed a short video recapping the events of the week.

Mark Justice, Tiko Jones and Becca Duvall coordinated transportation for three authors throughout the week, anddelivered promotional banners to schools prior to the week's events. Tiko and Becca also represented Cobb EMC atmany of the author presentations throughout the week at different schools.

Describe others’ role in the project (Reference outside sources of material, including templates; pre-existingWeb tools and apps; information from outside groups, such as Straight Talk or Touchstone Energy; stockphotos and music, etc.) *

Camille Fish was hired as an independent contractor to schedule each author visit throughout the week. Uponreceiving the list of participating schools, she matched schools with authors and made sure all of the authors’ needswere met (PowerPoint, projector, A/V equipment, easels, tables, etc.). Camille scheduled each author’s day from startto finish including any requests from the school, such as the author appearing on the school’s morningannouncements, eating lunch with students, signing books, etc. Camille also assisted with the transportation of oneauthor to and from the schools.

Project's Objective *

Restrictions/Limitations *

Literacy Week was limited to October 26-30, 2015, so any pre-established scheduling conflicts with authors and/orschools had to be adjusted within the parameters of those dates.

Page 40: 2015 Literacy Week Simple Schedule...• TUESDAY, October 27, 2015: School Contact: Carol McMichen 8:00 Jenny Cote arrives at Free Home Elementary 8:20-9:10 Session 1 – Room 2 3rd

Additionally, we originally booked author visits for 36 schools during the week but due to circumstances out of ourcontrol we had to reschedule two visits outside of the dates of the Literacy Week. One author had a death in theimmediate family and another’s child was hospitalized suddenly. Both appearances were rescheduled in the weeksfollowing Literacy Week and have already been made up.

School schedules were also a limitation for this event. Schools now have to meet seat-time requirements so asexcited as they are about Literacy Week, they are not as open to outside events as they were previously. It is difficultto schedule an event that impacts every single child at a school in one day. Specifically, at the Title I schools with1,000+ students, two authors were sent on two separate days to ensure every student was able to participate.

Describe why you chose this typeof social media and how you usedit *

Provide a brief summary that states the purpose of the event, how the program was implemented, and resultsand how they were measured *

Purpose: For the past six years, Cobb EMC has implemented the Literacy Week event to inspire and encourage a loveof reading and writing among students and reinforce the fact that literacy is the true foundation for a qualityeducation. This year, Cobb EMC sponsored visits from 10 different authors and/or illustrators to 34 different schoolsacross Bartow, Cobb, Cherokee, and Paulding counties. When: October 26-30, 2015 Implementation: In the early planning stages of Literacy Week, schools were selected for author visits based oninterest and need; schools with the Title I designation were at the top of the list. We wanted to reach students whomay not be given frequent opportunities for supplemental learning. After selecting schools, we carefully scheduledauthor visits for each school throughout the week, planned a kick-off dinner and developed/ordered promotionalmaterials for the week. Large banners featuring the Cobb EMC logo, author name and photo, were sent to eachparticipating school to get students/parents excited about the author visits. On Monday, October 26, 2015, Cobb EMC hosted a kick-off dinner on-site for all 10 authors/illustrators and themedia specialists from the 34 participating schools. Four of the authors participated in a panel discussion about thecurrent state of literacy and reading both in the classroom and culture at-large. The panel reignited everyone in theroom’s love of reading and many left with a renewed motivation to promote literacy. Each day, an author spent the entire day at one school, presenting and doing activities with three to six sessions ofstudents. Wattson, the Cobb EMC safety mascot, visited approximately 25 of 34 schools throughout the week to handout bookmarks, pencils and stickers. The Cobb EMC education and community relations team also visited as manyauthor presentations at different schools as possible; we believe in being hands-on with schools in an effort to buildbetter relationships with the community. Results/measurement: Literacy Week is a part of Cobb EMC’s strategic plan for the education and communityrelations department. The success of Literacy Week was established based on the number of authors, number ofschools, and number of students reached. The goal for Literacy Week 2015 was 7 authors, 25 schools and 13,000students impacted. We far exceeded our goal in all three of those categories. 10 authors and 36 schools participated(after two rescheduled visits due to unforeseen circumstances) and roughly 20,000 students were impacted. Another goal for Literacy Week was to secure attendance to one school’s author visit by State Superintendent RichardWoods. Once Woods learned of the great impact Literacy Week has on the schools, he was eager to visit not one, buttwo schools. Woods visited both LaBelle Elementary and Boston Elementary and event took the time to read hisfavorite children’s book, “The Day The Crayons Quit” to an entire grade level of students.
