WHO WE ARE
08 13MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN
As I write some thoughts for March, I just returned from the southernmost tip of mainland Japan. For those
that might want to visit Point Sata, there is a lot to see and do, including live volcanoes, wild monkeys and
pigs, crystal clear warm waters, jungle walks, glass bot tom boats and great fishing and diving.
The month of March is upon us and for those thin blooded individuals amongst us, hopefully some warmer
weather. If you are new to Japan or to Iwakuni, please take some time to visit the Kintai Bridge at the end of
March and beginning of April to view the blooming of the Sakura trees. This annual event at the Kintai Bridge
brings visitors and vendors from across the nation and is an experience of a lifetime. Grab some coworkers,
friends or family to have a traditional “hanami” or a picnic beneath the blossoming trees to celebrate the
breathtaking blossoms. For the shut terbugs out there, take some photos that you will no doubt want to keep
forever.
This month is recognized as Women’s History Month, let’s all take a moment to identify the struggles and
achievements that women have experienced throughout the history of the United States and world. It was
in 1995 that U.S. presidents began issuing annual proclamations designating Women’s History Month. The
procession of ef for ts to make it of ficial were the result of hard work and dedication; similar to the ef for ts
of women throughout history. Stop by the Library and pick up some reading material to learn more about the
ef for ts of some notable women in leadership.
The weather will be warmer before you know it and there is no bet ter time to make plans for the future than
the present. Please stop by IT T, Outdoor Rec, and Cultural Adaptation to learn what events are coming up that
will help you make the best of your time in Japan. Enjoy the springtime in Japan, Iwakuni!

BEGINNING APRIL 1, 2015 THE JAPANESE ANNUAL ROAD TAX SEASON WILL STARTThis is when all vehicle owners must pay their respective vehicles taxes. While this point is important, it is imperative
that you know your vehicle must be registered to this base and prefecture or adjacent prefecture by April 1, 2015. This simply means that if you were previously registered in Okinawa and you transferred to MCAS Iwakuni with a vehicle
and never registered at Pass and Registration building 608, prior to April 1, 2015 you will be responsible for paying your taxes in Okinawa or another bases prefecture.
Signs will be posted at key locations throughout the base to remind you to pay your road tax. Prices may differ slightly from previous year but shouldn’t vary much from last year’s payment. If you are unsure of the previous
amount paid please look at the documents used for vehicle registration, you should have the following: Title, Japanese Compulsory Insurance, Recycling Fee receipt (motorcycles will not have one), secondary car insurance and the Road Tax
receipt which is usually a little white piece of paper about the size of a credit card that states “Automobile Tax Stamp” across the middle. These are the primary documents you will need when you go to Pass and Registration to validate payment and registration,
along with the vehicle being registered. IF YOU HAVE LOST ANY OF THESE DOCUMENTS PLEASE GO TO PASS AND REGISTRATION AND RECEIVE THE PROPER DOCUMENTS TO RECOVER SAID FORMS.
YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PAY YOUR ROAD TAX AT:
MCCS AUTO SKILLS CENTER PMO (DURING SPECIFIED TIMES, TBA)
IWAKUNI CITY HALL
THE AUTO SKILLS CENTER WILL BE AT THE FOOD COURT WIFI LOUNGE APRIL 1-30, MON - FRI, 9 AM - 6 PM The tax is required by Japanese law, so pay your Road Tax right on base (Yamaguchi Prefecture plates only). Cost is $5 per vehicle plus required tax, call 253-5325 for fee structure.
If you have any questions please contact Pass and Registration Supervisor at 253-3135.

oBentoOne of the best things about lunch for a lot of Japanese people is the
anticipation of what they will find when the open up their obento.
Obento is what we call a boxed meal, or a packed lunch. They are
usually packed up in a bento bako, which is like a lunch a box that
can consists of two plastic containers that stack on top of each
other or a single large container with dividers. For the ones that
are two containers, one is for the rice or rice balls and the other
is for the okazu. Okazu is what we call the food that is prepared
specifically to be eaten with rice. Many moms and wives will
wake up way before everyone else in the family to lovingly
prepare an obento for their children and husband. As each
person heads off to school or work, they are handed their
obento. They usually don’t know what is inside so it’s a
surprise when they sit down to eat and open their bento
bako up.
Sometimes leftovers from the previous night’s dinner
are used, but quite often the food is freshly made
that morning. The person preparing the obento puts
some thought into making it a well balanced meal
that can be enjoyed at room temperature in case
there isn’t a microwave available. Typically, there
will be some fish or meat and some vegetables.
There might be four or five different items in
the okazu box, but they are all small portions
so they can all fit nicely into the bento bako.
Presentation is another important part
of making obento and some people get
very creative with it. I have seen little
rice balls made to look like soccer balls
for a son who loves soccer. A friend of
mine made her husband an obento
and designed a naked woman by cutting seaweed and using
a few other food items. It was truly a work of art and he had
no idea so I could only imagine his expression when he lifted
the top off of his obento. Some women have been known to get
creative when they are angry too. One used seaweed pieces cut
up to form a mean message on top of her husband’s rice. I often
wonder what his expression was and whether he ate his obento
or not. While everything used to be done by hand, now there are
so many tools and molds to help people prepare really cute items
for their obento. I’ve seen molds to make rice balls in the shapes of
cartoon characters, and tools to help cut seaweed into different faces
to place on the rice balls.
Although I didn’t grow up eating obento every day, my mom made a
large obento whenever we had an outing. I remember the two large
plastic containers that she would pack full with delicious okazu and rice
balls, and wrap in cloth so it would be easier to carry. I loved the outings
with my family and my favorite part of the day was always sitting down on
the ground and opening up the huge obento to see what my mom had made
for us. When I became a responsible adult and got a job, my mom would make
me obento sometimes to take to work with me. She would never tell me so I
wouldn’t know until she handed it to me on my way out the door.
I would have a huge smile on my face when I opened my bento bako because while I had no idea what was under the lid, I knew it had all been prepared
with love and thoughtfulness.Today, more women are working and just don’t have the time to make elaborate
lunches for their loved ones anymore. That’s where convenience stores and obento
shops come in. If you go to any convenience store you will find a nice selection of
obentos that people can just grab and heat up. There are also some very reasonably
priced obento shops that will deliver a freshly made obento to your office every day.

My family and I moved to Japan about a year and a half ago. It was a wonderful experience that we will never forget. I was very excited to take this opportunity to explore a new country such as Japan and their culture; we were thrilled! Although it seemed like a large task to move from one side of the world to the other; it was surprisingly easier than I thought. I still remember the first day we landed. There was technology everywhere, spotless public airport bathrooms, and gourmet sushi at our beck and call. When getting off the plane and driving towards the base, the first thing we noticed was the number of 7-Eleven stores and vending machines. At that point, we knew that this place was close to home even if we were so far away.
As we looked at the scenery of the mountains, street signs, different vehicles, and stores; we instantly made the decision to move out in town to really get the full Japanese experience. We started looking for homes immediately the next day and we quickly became depressed. As a family of 5, there was no place available at the time that could even fit 3 of us. We have all girls so they need their own space and that was something that was very hard to come by. We watched House Hunters and just had the feeling that we would find a perfect fit for us...and we did.
Although we had to compromise on the location; meaning having a further commute as well as the dark streets with two way lanes that seemed like it would only fit one small car at a time; the good far out weighed the bad. We were surrounded by glorious green mountains in the winter that turned amazing bright rainbow colors in the summer. We have enough space to fit 10 cars and a trampoline comfortably, which means that the children could ride their bikes and play freely without worry of danger. The air was crisp clean with the slightest breeze coming in the wind. The bottled water that we drank regularly started tasting like chemically processed sludge after drinking the delicious well water we had the pleasure of drinking in abundance and free of charge. But the best part of it all is that the owners of the property quickly became the Japanese grandparents for my children. We became a part of their family with regular outings, picnics, and good old fun.
I would encourage everyone to come with an open mind, free spirit, and thirst for the rich culture that Japan has to offer. I’m certain that we wouldn’t have had as many great experiences or the pleasure of interacting with so many generous friendly people if we hadn’t taken the opportunity to live in the Japanese economy to the fullest extent. It was a decision that my children will always remember and times that we will always cherish. The sheer delightful feeling of seeing the sun rise from our home or having front row seats in our yard for the fantastic star shows in the sky without interruption are truly priceless. It all seems like a dream and a fabulous one at that. So get out and explore!

VOLUNTEERS!
You’ve seen them everywhere ... the cheerful coach of your child’s youth sports team, the
sympathetic spouse clipping coupons for Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society to give to new residents, a perky parent putting
together baskets for the school auction, the limber leader of a toddlers and tunes class.
Who are these wonderful workers you ask?

Community
If you want to have fun while
connecting with your community,
making new friends, and even
building your résumé, volunteering
is the way to go.
Volunteers are the helping hands
that give the extra push to make
this base a great place to live and
work. As a volunteer, you bring
unique perspectives, experiences,
and knowledge to share. Not only
are you giving to others, but the
benefits you receive are endless.
Among those benefits are gaining
leadership skills, discovering new
talents, and creating a network in
your community. It is important
to become connected to your
community and make a life of your
own at your duty station, especially
living overseas! It’s easy to feel
overwhelmed when tackling a new
location, much more a new country!
Volunteering is a great place to
begin building those positive
connections and relationships with
in your new community.
But don’t worry, even if you’ve
never volunteered before or are
clueless to the countless volunteer
opportunities aboard this station,
Marine Corps Family Team Building
can help. We have a wonderful staff
who can help you find the best way
to channel your own passions and
spread that enthusiasm to others.
Let’s say your passion is holiday
baking, how about donating those
delicious treats to the Single Marine
Program? What if you really love
to yell encouragement as you pass
out water to runners? Guess what,
there are many opportunities for
you to do just that!
Every time you volunteer, regardless
of how little you think it might be,
you’ve planted a seed of inspiration
in others. For me, that seed was
planted in a L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses
class I attended, which grew and
inspired me to do the same for
others as a L.I.N.K.S. Mentor. After
taking the L.I.N.K.S. class, I was
blown away by the positive impact
it had by giving spouses great
information on topics that affect all
of us and also promotes building
friendships with fellow spouses. I
enjoy every class I teach and every
new friend I make through this
program.

However, I’m not the only one enjoying volunteering. Here is what a few of our other L.I.N.K.S. Mentors had to say:

who are new to life in the Marine Corps or just new to our duty station. We can make the transition as seamless as possible , but to further expand our network

SEMPER FIT ARTICLE
The Semper Fit Commanders Cup Chal-lenge provides servicemembers here at MCAS Iwakuni with an opportunity to of-ficially prove which unit is better. Through healthy competition that challenges ser-vicemembers both mentally and physi-cally, the Commanders Cup Challenge is here to make it official.
The Commanders Cup Challenges will incorporate all aspects of fitness to in-clude power, speed, agility, endurance and strength. All the while, maintaining a fun factor element to keep the events better balanced for all servicemembers
involved. Adding sports like Racquetball and ultimate Frisbee allow military mem-bers of varying skill to participate.
Additional challenges like Zombie Tag and Pirates of Iwakuni test problem solving skills and focusing less on ath-leticism. There will always be a degree of athleticism involved, but the goal of the Commanders Cup Challenge is to pro-mote healthy lifestyles and camaraderie within each unit.
The Commanders Cup Challenge pro-vides servicemembers an opportunity to come together as a unit outside of the
day-to-day obligations of their respective military branches. By changing up the routine and having some good old fash-ioned fun.
The final event in the Commanders Cup Challenge is the Gladiators Challenge. Five separate events to push servicemem-bers harder than any other challenge be-fore it. The winners will walk away with the hard earned title of Commanders Cup Champs.
All the while providing them with actual proof that their unit is indeed, better than the others.
THERE WILL ALWAYS BE RIVALRY. RIVALRY IS GOOD. RIVALRY IS HEALTHY. IT GIVES SERVICEMEMBERS ABOARD MCAS IWAKUNI SOMETHING TO ASPIRE TO. AN UNOFFICIAL
LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE TO ACHIEVE WITHIN THE RANK AND FILE.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE
by Stacey Kobe-Bellika, Supervisory Librarian
The Lucky Corner:
The most well-known treasure the Library
offers is that of information, which can be
considered the most important commodity
in the 21st century. Libraries are the place
where you go for information, because we
have everything you need to get started
and keep you going on your personal or
professional journey. Whether you prefer
your information through the printed
word or electronically, visually or orally,
through classes or research databases,
we’ve got you covered.
The foundation of a democracy depends on
access to a wide variety of information and
ideas. This is why we believe information
should be free. We offer FREE print
books and electronic books, audio books,
magazines, journals, music, and movies
for all ages. Even if the Library doesn’t own
what you are looking for, we can borrow
from other Libraries through Inter-Library
loan and we even take purchase requests.
Why would you ever buy your own books,
music or movies?
This is not to say that the Library is just for
traditional learning; don’t forget the value
of fiction. Neil Gaiman, popular author of
adult and children’s books, puts it best:
“Fiction can show you a different world. It can take you somewhere you've never been. Once you've visited
other worlds, like those who ate fairy fruit, you can never be entirely content with the world that
you grew up in. Discontent is a good thing: discontented people can modify and improve their worlds, leave them better, leave them different.”1
Finding Treasure at your LibraryIn 2014 the value of Library service provided in Iwakuni was $1,347,287*. There is a pot of gold in Building 411 and it’s being given away for FREE!
THE REAL GEMSLibrar ies are not just about the information, but about the community. Libraries are community centers, centers for the arts, youth centers, technology centers and cultural centers.
A whole new world opens up when you begin to understand the Japanese language, culture and customs. The Library offers a Japanese Language and Culture section to learn on your own or you can sign up for one of the Cultural Adaptation Program’s many trips and classes. A few of our upcoming events are Bamboo Cutting and Rice pounding and a lunchtime Survival Japanese series. We also offer a monthly Living in Japan: The Basics course where you can gather all kinds of tips and tricks for living in Japan. Want to introduce your children to new experiences? Why not bring the whole family the second Saturday of every month to our Story Time in Japanese.
In the words of Robert Putnam,
So, discover your community, make connections, get out there and explore, expand your mind and your horizons and claim your piece of the treasure.
OTHER PEARLS TO FIND IN THE LIBRARY:• Marine Corps and Navy
Professional Reading lists
• Public use computers with Printing, copying, and scanning
• Free Wi-Fi
• Cultural trips and classes
• Story times in English and Japanese
• Reservable community meeting room and computer lab
• United through Reading site

HIDDEN TREASURESCan’t make it to Building 411 to gather your
bounty? You can share in the wealth without ever stepping foot in the building. Our electronic resources can
be accessed online 24/7.
The hidden treasures are those that you can’t see when you walk in the building.
Like the live online tutors offered to K-12 students though Tutor.com

SCHOOL LUNCH:
How much bang for your buck?
After World War II, General Lewis Hershey
testified in Congress regarding the national
security implications of our nation’s lack
of healthy soldiers. Hershey headed up the
Selective Service Board and testified that
as many as 40% of rejected draftees were
“too malnourished to fight”. In response
to his testimony, President Harry Truman
signed the National School Lunch Act in
1946. With this act, the Department of
Agriculture would reimburse schools for
a portion of each meal served, as long as it
met certain nutrition standards designed
to get more calories into our growing
school age population.
I may be showing my age here, but when
I was in school in the late 70’s and early
80’s, school lunch reimbursement rates
plummeted by 1/3 and it showed in
the quality of foods served. Schools
were forced to turn to the most cost-
effective ingredients; mass produced,
processed commodity ingredients filled
with saturated and trans fats and little
nutrition. Hence the term “mystery meat”.
Many students regularly ate from the
snack and soda vending machines in every
school. Our nation’s youth went from too
underweight to “too fat to fight”.
Fast forward to today. There have been
massive systemic reforms to the School
Lunch Program. The Healthy, Hunger-Free
Kids Act of 2010 requires schools to offer
more of the items that kids need and less
of what they don’t.
Just a little of the “bang for your buck” that you get today:• School lunch menus must provide a full
third of the nutrition your child needs
in a day, including protein, calories,
vitamin A and C, iron and calcium
among others.
• Menus must also strictly limit items
that may be detrimental to your child’s
future health, including saturated and
trans fats, sodium and excess calories.
• How do they do this? Menus are planned
by a Registered Dietitian who calculates
the precise nutrients and portion size
of foods based on each stage of a child’s
development. Where else can you get
meals medically planned specifically for
your child’s needs?
• Children from families with incomes at
or below 185% of the poverty level are
eligible for free or reduced price meals.
For 2014-2015, that’s $55,167 for a family
of four. You may be eligible, so apply
today!
• According to a 2008 USDA study, the
estimated average cost to produce a
school lunch in the U.S. was $2.91. Since
then, rising food, labor and fuel costs;
long distance shipping of fresh foods;
and obtaining of products specially
formulated to meet your child’s specific
nutrient needs have nearly doubled
these costs in difficult to reach areas
like ours. The price that you pay for
lunch today is less t hat
lunch cost to produce
more than five years
ago and is much
more nut r it ious.
That’s a lot of bang
for your buck.
We’ve come a long way since World War II; but we are still working to improve every day and in every way possible. As a matter of fact, just this year we introduced a great new convenience for parents, online account services!
