Chapter’s October Meeting Minutes. President Ponder asked if there were any changes to the minutes of the Chapter’s October meeting, and on hearing none proposed, he asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the Chapter’s October meeting; in response there was such a motion from the floor; the motion was seconded; the motion was passed on a unanimous vote.

Elizabeth’s New Life Center (ENLC) Ultrasound Van. President Ponder thanked all, who were at the blessing last month of the ultrasound machine by Bishop Joseph R. Binzer, who is the Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. President Ponder said he was very proud of the Chapter’s participation in raising funds for the ultrasound van and in supporting the events to bless the ultrasound machine.

Cincinnati-area Ultrasound Van. President Ponder gave a synopsis of recent telephone calls, which he had with State Warden Larry Droesch, State Culture of Life Director Gary Anderson, and Cincinnati Chapter President Walt Amrein, who all asked for assistance from councils in the Dayton Chapter to raise funds for an ultrasound demonstrator to be used in the Cincinnati area. The Cincinnati Chapter is seeking assistance in raising $15,000 in order to reach a decision by December 15 th regarding courses of action.

Coats for Kids Program. President Ponder said there is one free box of coats for the Chapter from the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council for the Coats for Kids Program; last year, there were fourteen free boxes of coats for the Chapter. He said while the decline in the number of Supreme-provided free boxes of coats for distribution in the local Dayton area is disappointing, on the other hand, any council can purchase a box or more of coats via the Knights Gear Online Store (www.knightsgear.com) for distribution in the areas served by that council.

Degree Teams. In response to a question from State Warden Droesch, President Ponder said: (i) there is no Chapter-sponsored team for the Knighthood Degree (formerly called the Third Degree), but there are two conferring officers with teams in the Dayton area; and (ii) there is no Chapter-sponsored team for the Formation Degree (formerly called the Second Degree), but there are three teams in the Dayton area.

Greater Dayton Rosary Rally. Don Coty provided an update report on last month’s Greater Dayton Rosary Rally. He said that with recent contributions, the Rally can now pay its bills for this year, i.e., 2015, with a little left over to contribute to Radio Maria, which provided free radio coverage. With respect to the 2016 Rosary Rally, the Rosary Rally’s budget is now about $6700; accordingly, he asked all councils to add the Rosary Rally to their 2016 budget, and to donate as soon as possible to the 2016 Rosary Rally to allow for adequate planning, given constrained resources. He said that as long as the Rosary Rally can continue to pay its bills, the Rosary Rally will continue. There was a general discussion on the elements, which comprise the Rosary Rally’s budget; for those interested, please contact him for the specifics. He said that the Rosary Rally is looking for a photographer for next year, as well as for a volunteer to maintain the Rosary Rally’s Facebook page. The Rosary Rally website is at http://familyrosaryrally.com/ or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/familyrosaryrally.dayton. Bishop Binzer will convene a meeting on December 15th to discuss how to get more support for the Rosary Rally from priests in the Archdiocese’s area.

Columbian Classic. Jim Dieme said October’s Columbian Classic Dayton Deanery Priest Appreciation Golf Outing and Dinner at Community Golf Course raised about $4500 for vocations; this amount is about $500 less than last year.

Serra Club. President Ponder reported that the Serra Club’s Youth Ministry Awards banquet will be held on Sunday, April 10th at St. Luke Catholic Parish, Beavercreek. The banquet organizers are seeking a contribution of $100 from all Greater Dayton area councils and assemblies and are requesting participation from local Fourth Degree assemblies. Already, two councils have sent $100 checks to the Serra Club; checks go to Dayton Serra Club.

Greater Dayton Chapter Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Program. DD8 Bob Burns, who is temporarily the VAVS Program focal point, reported on happenings with the VAVS Program. On Sunday, November 15th, Chapter VAVS volunteers decorated for Christmas the Multipurpose Room of Building 305 at the Dayton VA Medical Center Complex. On Thursday, December 17th, there will be a gift giving tour in the Medical Center Complex. The Christmas Vigil Mass will be held on Thursday, December 24 th at 7pm. Finally, DD8 Burns is looking for a replacement as the new permanent VAVS Program focal point.

5. OSC Program Staff Reports.

State Community Director. State Community Director Tom Forsthoefel said that councils should accomplish their reports right away to ensure that they’re not forgotten and to get credit in the OSC general program for their activities.

State Retention Director West. State Retention Director West Bill Wirtz said that there are issues remaining with the OSC website; consequently, councils should go the website after posting reports to ensure that the posts are posted correctly; in general, reports should be done in a separate word processing document, saved, then copied to the OSC website; that way, if a post fails to show, the council just has to copy and paste the same report over and not to recreate it from scratch. Also with respect to retention, in the OSC General Program Book, Activity #84 is “Establish a Mentoring Program,” whose purpose is to get a new member familiar with how your council works and with how the overall Knights of Columbus organization works, to get a new member feeling welcomed and comfortable and integrated into meetings, and to get a new member to participate in activities in the Knights of Columbus. He said very few councils submitted a report this year on this Activity, which requires the adaptation of a council Mentoring Handbook with examples showing how this program ties to the Retention Committee and to Proposer training. He concluded by saying the key is to put together a mentoring program and to use it to improve membership.

District Deputy Coordinator, Cincinnati. District Deputy Coordinator, Cincinnati, Sam Robinson reminded Chapter delegates: (i) to being issues, concerns, comments, etc. to their district deputies for potential discussion at January’s District Deputy Semiannual Meeting, which is a good time to broach topics with Ohio State Council officers and staff and with the Supreme representative attending; (ii) to encourage district deputy wardens and those interested in being a district deputy to attend and observe the District Deputy Semiannual Meeting; (iii) to encourage councils to send participants to the OSC state bowling tournament; (iv) to encourage councils to complete their fraternal survey and submit it when due; (v) to encourage councils to complete their semiannual audit and submit it when due; (vi) to encourage councils to submit their first report for the OSC Pennies for Heaven Program; (vii) to encourage councils to order their Free Throw Program materials; (viii) to encourage councils to participate in the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council’s program to spread the Light of Christ at 8pm

on December 2nd; and (ix) to encourage council members to work with their insurance agents regarding covering costs associated with burial expenses; he relayed comments from the Cincinnati Chapter’s November meeting, at which a representative from the Gate of Heaven Cemetery discussed burial expenses (e.g., for full body ($6700 for a funeral home + $6700 for the cemetery), for body donation ($800 for cremation), etc.) and concluded with pre-planning for burial expenses allows for mourning, rather than for logistics, immediately after death; insurance agents can facilitate pre-planning for burial expenses.

6. Fourth Degree Hennepin Province Staff Report. No report.

7. District Deputy Reports. DD5, DD6, and DD8 reported on events and degrees now since passed. DD17 Bob Weaver asked Chapter delegated to make known that the Regional Free Throw Challenge will be at Bishop Fenwick High School, 4855 State Route 122, Franklin, on February 28, 2016, with registration beginning at 12:45pm with the first shot beginning at 2pm. Additionally, President Ponder asked district deputies to encourage councils, which have been members of the Greater Dayton Chapter, but now do not attend, to attend the Chapter meetings.

8. Unfinished Business.

Delegate Enfranchisement. In September, Mike Thomas led a discussion on whether council delegates to the Dayton Chapter should be allowed to vote if the delegates’ councils have not paid yet their dues to the Dayton Chapter. Because the Chapter attendees could not reach a decision, Chapter Vice President Shaw said then that Chapter President Ponder will address this topic at the next Chapter meeting in October. At the October Chapter meeting, Chapter President Ponder said he is not ready yet to address this topic and it will be tabled until November’s Chapter meeting. At this November Chapter meeting following discussion, during which it became apparent that the Chapter Bylaws do not address this issue, Mike Thomas agreed to propose a resolution at the January meeting to amend the Chapter bylaws to address this matter.

9. New Business.

December Meeting. President Ponder announced that consistent with past years’ Chapter meeting schedules, there will be no Chapter meeting in December. He wished all a blessed holiday season and to take time to spend time with families.

10. Council Announcements. Council 7981 and others announced events (degrees, fundraisers, etc.) now since passed. In particular, Council 14995 received a round of applause from the Chapter attendees when the Council’s representative said the Council raised $14,000 for its Parish’s school.
