What is KPLD Week? Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Awareness Week, or
KPLD Week, is a week hosted by the KPLD Service Leadership Program Committee designed to raise awareness for Pediatric Lyme Disease through a number of challenges assigned to the individual days of the week. These challenges are intended for members of the New York District Kiwanis family to have fun while raising awareness of and money for the KPLD Foundation. The Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation was founded in 2002 under New York District Kiwanis Governor John Gridley to focus on two initiatives: assisting families with paying medical bills related to treatment for Pediatric Lyme Disease, and raising awareness of Pediatric Lyme Disease and its prevention. KPLD Week 2015 will be held on the week of February 9, 2015, with the days signifying the following:
• Mon: Wear “lyme green” to show support for PLD
• Tues: Educate anyone and everyone on PLD
• Wed: fundraise for KPLD
• Thu: distribute tick kits to help with prevention & treatment • Fri: Complete and share photos from photo scavenger hunt
• Sat & Sun: plan your own event!

The Photo Scavenger Hunt The KPLD Week Photo Scavenger Hunt is meant to be a
way for the New York District Kiwanis family to get involved in fundraising and awareness-raising for Pediatric Lyme Disease in a fun and creative way.
During this scavenger hunt, which can take place anytime during KPLD Week, there will be a number of challenges to complete. Feel free to post them anywhere you can: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are usually the best places. But don’t forget to use the hashtag #KPLD2015!
While it is recommended that you post the images on Friday for the strongest effect – the more people who post at the same time, the more noticed it will be – post them whenever you get the chance during the week.
If you want to hold such a scavenger hunt as a group such as a club or division, you may want to charge an admission fee in order to raise money (more information on that in our Fundraising Guide).

Create a KPLD Banner (5 points per banner, 15 points maximum)
One really nice, easy, and fun way to raise awareness for any cause is to get together and make a pretty banner! So, one thing you can do to raise awareness for Pediatric Lyme Disease is make a banner representing KPLD. Have a blast with this one, and make it look however you’d like (keeping it appropriate, of course). For inspiration, visit the KPLD Foundation’s website.
“KPLD” from Limbs & Bodies (1 point each, 5 points maximum)
Another idea to get a bunch of people together: bend and shape your bodies and limbs to form the letters “KPLD”. You might want to include a cameraman for this one, since your arms will be busy.
“KPLD” from Objects (1 point each, 5 points maximum)
Same goal as the last one, except now you can use objects. Get some green skittles and M&Ms and write out “KPLD” with them. You can also use water bottles, shoes, your options are endless! Get creative with it.

Drawing a Tick in the Snow (1 point each, 5 points maximum)
Perhaps the most prevalent method of transmission of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease is through deer ticks. Your mission: draw a tick in the snow. If there’s no snow out, draw a tick in the mud or the grass. The ground is now your easel. If you’re feeling like doing extra, you could even write out KPLD under it and leave it around for a while.
Group Wearing Lime Green Shirts (1 point per person, 10 points maximum)
We all know how popular you guys are. So get all of your friends together, because it’s group selfie time (you could also get somebody else to take the picture, if you’d prefer). If you have KPLD shirts, that’s great. If not, any lime green shirts will do. Get as many people in the picture as you can, and don’t forget to look awesome!

Writing Facts on Chalkboards (1 point each, 5 points maximum)
Want to feel like a teacher? Need a use for your 24-pack of dry erase markers? Get out a chalkboard or whiteboard and write out some Lyme disease facts. Here’s a couple:
The bacteria that cause Lyme disease are usually transmitted by deer ticks.
Some symptoms of Lyme disease include headaches, mood swings, irritability, & depression.
The most common identifier of Lyme disease is a “bull’s eye” rash.
Lyme disease, when caught early, may be cured with oral or intravenous antibiotics.
95% of US Lyme disease cases in 2013 were in the upper Midwest or Northeastern US.
But you’re not limited to these! If you need more or want some unique ones, you can visit the official KPLD webpage or the CDC’s webpage on Lyme disease (http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/).

Wearing Deer Antlers (1 point per person, 10 points maximum)
If you’re the hands-on creative type or you happen to have a pair of deer antlers lying around your house, this challenge is for you! Take a picture with your awesome deer antlers on, it’s that simple. Pass them to your friends and get them to post pictures too.
Dress for Tick Protection (1 point per person, 10 points maximum)
Ticks are usually able to bite people by crawling up from the ground. One of the easiest ways to prevent this is by tucking your pant legs into your long socks. That way, ticks remain outside of your clothes. Now that you know this information, let everybody known by taking a picture of yourself dressed this way and posting it!
Design a KPLD Pin (5 points per design, 10 points maximum)
Are you good at designing? Post your take on a KPLD pin design! It’ll help to raise awareness, and it may even serve as our official pin design. Don’t you want to be KPLD famous? Here’s the current design:

KPLD-themed Cupcakes (2 point per cupcake, 20 points maximum)
This is one of those times where you will be encouraged to post food pictures on Instagram. Get all of your friends who know how to bake together to make some delicious KPLD-themed cupcakes! Again, let your creative sides loose with this challenge. They can be lime green, have KPLD written on them, ticks drawn on top of them, it’s all up to you! You could even sell them to raise money. Have fun with this one!
Using a Tick Kit (1 point each, 5 points maximum)
Using a tick kit is a method of preventing Lyme disease! Posting an image of somebody using one raises awareness of both the disease and its prevention. If you need a tick kit for this challenge, contact the committee’s Circle K Chair Terrell via email at [email protected] ASAP and we will work together to order them.

Find KPLD Fellows (1 point per fellow)
Do you know any KPLD fellows? These are recipients of the Brittany Fellowship (including the Emerald level) and/or a Joseph M. Wuest Service Leadership Fellowship Pin. Help them be recognized for their efforts to support those with Lyme disease by taking a picture with them. Try to get them to wear their pins or medallions if you can.
Raise Awareness Your Way! (1 point each, 5 points maximum)
This one’s a free-for-all! Have any ideas that may help to raise awareness that aren’t included in this guide? Feel free to post them up anyway! Anything in good spirit can help support this cause. Just don’t forget the hashtag when you post the pictures.
