Fire Extinguisher Use There are different types of fire extinguishers for different types
of fire hazards.

Notes: LIMITED indicates that the extinguishant is NOT the agent of choice for the class of fire, but that it will have limited extinguishing capability.
Class D fires (involving combustible materials) use only special purpose extinguishers and seek expert advice.

HOW TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER
Extinguishers come in a number of shapes and sizes. They all operate in a similar manner. Here’s an easy acronym for extinguisher use:
P PULL the pin on the extinguisher
A AIM the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire and stand 2m away from the fire
S SQUEEZE the handle of the extinguisher
S SWEEP the extinguisher left to right, while aiming at the base of the fire

Dry Chemical Extinguishers
ABE fire extinguishers are recommended for fires where wood, paper, flammable liquid or live electrical equipment are involved.

Water fire extinguishers are recommended for Class ‘A’ fires that involve combustible materials such as wood, paper, rubbish and fabrics. These extinguishers should not be used on flammable liquid or live electrical equipment fires.
