27th August 2015 Dear Parents, ENHANCING ONLINE SAFETY FOR OUR CHILDREN Recently the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has released another avenue for children to report if they have experienced bullying. It is an online service where children can visit the website https://www.esafety.gov.au/ and make an online report about a cyberbullying experience if they wish. The Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner is a one-stop-shop for online safety. The Office provides Australians a range of up-to-date information and resources, coupled with a comprehensive complaints system to assist children who experience serious cyberbullying. The aim of the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner With the aim to help guide children and young people toward safe, enjoyable experiences online, the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner hopes to encourage behavioural change—where Aus- tralian children and young people act responsibly online—just as they would offline. Our goal is to create an environment in which cyberbullying is truly unacceptable. To achieve this, we hope to both educate and help prevent harmful online behaviour from occurring in the first place. SCHOOL CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE The St Francis de Sales School will celebrate it’s Centenary in 2017. We are seeking members of the present and past school community to form a Centenary Celebrations Committee which will start planning for the event. It is planned that the formation committee will consist of the Parish Priest, a mem- ber of the Parish Council, the Principal and 2 members of staff , 2 members of our current parent body and 2 members selected from interested past students/ parents. Our 2016 student cohort’s input will also be encouraged in the planning next year. It is then expected that the committee will decide on the formation of sub- commit- tees to work on the various elements of the celebrations and the dates. Any interested parties are to please contact the school on our e-mail address: [email protected] to register your interest in serving on the commit- tee. Please register this interest by next Friday, 4 September 2015. We will also advertise for interested parties in the Clifton Courier next week.

5 Reasons Why Reduced Screen Time Will Make Your Family Life Easier

(Continued from last week)

2. Your child will be able to concentrate better at school with no screen time before school. Screen time and TV has been shown to impact on children’s concentration in the class-room. Many teachers I’ve worked with tell me they can tell each day who has had screen time in the morning by the children’s concentration and attention levels! A better option is to swap screen time for some active play. Trampolines are my personal

favourite, but bouncing on an exercise ball, running around the back yard or having a

quick swing is very instrumental in preparing the body through movement and muscle in-

put to be ready for concentrating. The reticular formation is a small part of the brain that

responds especially to up and down movement, feeding and preparing the nervous sys-

tem to be ready for sitting, learning and taking in new information.

Over the past few weeks, Year 5/6 have been very busy learning about a variety

of topics. In Technology, we have been learning how to create an I-Movie using

the I-Pads. In small groups, we had to write a script, film our performance and

then edit the film to create our movies.

In Drama, we refined our improvisation skills and performed a variety of sketch-

es where we were given stimuli to react to in each scene. This was difficult but

the end results were very funny!

Finally, we have been rehearsing with Mr Spranklin for the Bush Dance. We are

starting to look pretty good which is lucky as it's not long now to the big day!

What a full on term we have been having!
