THEATRE SEASON

It’s Anzac Day this week, that’s my day, that’s the old Diggers’ day.

Is Anzac Day the chance to commemorate history, celebrate heroism and conjure national pride – or does it fly the flag for a different reality, one that brings the dignity of our Diggers to its knees? Alan Seymour’s landmark Australian play returns to the stage to incite as much passion as ever.

“The One Day of the Year occupies an important place in Australian Theatre. […] Perhaps The One Day of the Year holds a clue to ANZAC Day’s contemporary appeal among younger Australians: not sentimentalising war but sharing compassion for the sacrifices made by all who have fought in war.”

MIKADO

24 - 28 MarchAll shows - 8pmThe Capital’s Bendigo Bank TheatreGeneral priceAdult $44Conc $39

The Mikado has delighted audiences for more than a century, and spawned a number of imitations. Set in a Japanese town full of colourful characters, three little maids from school, a wandering minstrel, a hilariously corrupt public official and a Lord High Executioner. Beautiful school girl, Yum-Yum, loves the romantic minstrel, Nanki-Poo, but she is engaged to Ko-Ko, the executioner. This romantic triangle takes the usual course of thwarted romance, until the arrival of the fearsome Katisha, claiming Nanki-Poo as her perjured lover. The Mikado was first performed at the Savoy Theatre in London in 1885. Since then it has twice been a film and performed in every possible style. CT Production’s presentation is in the traditional mould, combining a modern playfulness with respect for the creators’ original intent.

There are some great live artists in the world whose performances really stamp themselves on your memory and they don’t get much more memorable than Michael Franti & Spearhead. Franti knows all about the power of music and with his band Spearhead they have earned a reputation for the communal spirit they create with their extraordinary live show. Franti regularly brings down the barrier between the performers on stage and the people in the audience; whether venturing into the crowd to slap hands or pulling fans up to dance, sing and play along with the band.

Happy to be a support act

So we’re not just a bank to our community – we get involved in lots of other ways too. Like sponsoring the performing arts.

Bendigo Bank (1858) and The Capital (1873) have spent many decades helping to make this city a stronger community.

But when it comes to the arts, we know our limitations as bankers.

That’s why we’re happy to be a support act for The Capital’s Theatre Season.

Everyday miracles do happen

A fully staged music theatre show about ordinary everyday miracles. Funny and heart-warming, packed with well-known and lesser known songs from the 30’s to the 70’s and a gorgeous frock or two, this is a story about embracing life, daring to try in spite of everything and finding love a second time around. Rebecca Morton is the lover, the mother and the chanteuse, dreaming of Paris while she hangs out the washing.

“Rebecca Morton captured the audience even before she set foot on the stage… she gives each performance everything she’s got.” Australianstage.com.au

One of Australia’s most revered indie-rock bands

Augie March returns after a five-year hiatus following the heights of One Crowded Hour and its top-ten successor Watch Me Disappear – bringing their poetic lyricism, guitar-driven grandeur and new album Havens Dumb to Ulumbarra Theatre.

Augie March were almost entirely without peer in its height, and singularly without imitation in its absence, so this is a welcome return to form and a superb return to the stage.

It is hard to imagine that James Morrison could get any better, but it seems with each time he hits the stage, he raises the bar even higher and effortlessly sails over. He is, by any standard, a virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Besides the trumpet, this multi-instrumentalist also plays trombone, euphonium, flugel horn, tuba, saxophones and piano. He is a Jazz jack of all trades and most definitely master of them all. James Morrison’s contributions to Australian jazz are innumerable. His clout as a multi-instrumentalist performer is evidenced in his recordings and performances around the world and he now adds the new Ulumbarra Theatre to this impressive list.

FIRST STAGES

Well, what are you waiting for? Come on up! They’re Back!

You know what 13 more storeys means. More INVENTIONS – like the 78 flavour ice-cream dispensing robot and the brain bamboozling Maze of Doom (not to mention the self-inflating underpants) and more things to go WRONG – not least of which is the very real possibility that the entire show is a complete and utter disaster. Will Andy and Terry push their friend Jill to her absolute limits? And who is this shady Hector Houtkop, with a really bad pirate accent? And what about ALL THOSE PIRATES?

“Laugh your heart out… the actors brought out the hilariousness of this imaginative world of craziness” Stagenoise.

Cowards, murderers or heroes? Life or death?

Ned Kelly is about to hang for his crimes, but his final night in prison is interrupted by the arrival of his brother Dan, disguised as a priest. Supposedly killed at the siege of Glenrowan, Dan is intent on moving north to Queensland and forgetting his past. To do so, he needs Ned’s blessing and forgiveness. But the last time they saw each other, Dan tried to shoot Ned dead. So begins a brutal confrontation by two titans of Australian history. Facing the sins of their past, each blames the other for their downfall. And neither will escape unharmed.

The only Blues Brothers show to be officially sanctioned by Dan Ackroyd and Judith Belushi Pisano

It seems like yesterday that brothers, Jake and Elwood Blues, played by John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, invited the world to join them on a ‘mission from God’. The hit movie The Blues Brothers was a lovable tale of redemption about the pair of paroled convicts who set out to save the Catholic orphanage in which they grew up by ‘getting the band back together’. Now thirty years on Australian Blues Brothers fans are set to get a nostalgic musical fix.

One of those rare performers with a gift, a presence, Dewayne simply tells his story to a crowded room and most individuals listening feel he’s singing just for them. He’s an Aboriginal man descended from both the Aboriginal community of Cape Barren Island and the Gunai/Kurnai people of Victoria, but his music can’t be neatly pigeonholed as Indigenous. It’s been influenced by his heritage, and then shaped by his tough early years and love of so many musical styles and great singers.

Supported by Sietta - a fusion of live vocals that penetrate the futuristic atmosphere conjured by programmed beats that roll through each track is one of the main impressions a Sietta listener or audience member will come away with. Caiti and James are always thinking ahead.

“… a uniquely gifted singer with hints of the soul of Marvin Gaye and the sunny beauty of Johnny Nash… full of memorable songs and glorious harmonies, it was spellbinding” Bruce Elder - Sydney Morning Herald.

Three playful works from the frontlines of dance.

From the frontlines of dance comes a program of three revolutionary works - a suite of playful, subersive and inspired pieces that push at the boundaries of performance. This is dance that doesn’t play it safe. From the minds of three esteemed choreographers, channelled through the exquisite dancers of Sydney Dance Company, comes a trio of works that break new ground. Whether they’re mashing up pop culture or poking fun at the sacred cows of dance, these are pieces that throw caution to the wind and hurl themselves into the void of the new. EMERGENCE, CACTI and FANATIC.

“Sydney Dance Company has never looked stronger, sexier or more playful than in this thrilling triple bill” Sun Herald.

A comedy about life, love… and the AFL

Our great game is viewed by an unlikely pair in the reserved section of a major sporting stadium. Starring real-life couple David Ross Paterson (Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, Chopper) as a loud, burly football fan, and Cecelia Specht (Criminal Minds, Castle, Neighbours) as a recently divorced football widow, claiming her ex-husband’s tickets as part of a messy divorce settlement to watch the game for the first time. As a footy ‘conscientious objector’ she is blissfully immune to the attraction of the game and instantly locks horns with her ex-husband’s footy-mate; her reluctant companion for four eventful quarters.

This play is absolutely hilarious… hilarious and moving… one unexpected laugh after another.” Alison Beckett - MCV.

Dark acts result in darker consequences and there is little that’s darker and more complicated than the act of revenge.

A family torn apart by murder, a son burdened with the truth and the task of avenging his father, and a country on the brink of war. Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark who is tormented by the impossibility of his dilemma, and who remains one of theatre’s most fascinating characters.

“This is why we still do the Bard’s plays - there’s truth and humanity in all of them still, it just takes the right set of ingredients.” The Sunday Herald Sun.

True stories from the men who flew in World War 2

Based on his two best-selling books, Flak and Fly, well-known writer and performer Michael Veitch presents Flak. Veitch’s life-long obsession with the aircraft of the Second World War led him to conclude that every single person who flew, or flew in them, has at least one extraordinary story to tell. With most of these veterans in their eighties, he knew that it was a matter of urgency to find them now. Veitch takes on the roles of former airmen, recounting their extraordinary, true and largely untold stories of combat in the air war of 1939-45.

“There are few storytellers in Australia like Michael Veitch. He puts humanity and wry observation into the terrible arithmetic of air warfare…” Dr Mark williams, Adjunct Professor, School of Art, RMIT University.

As the sound of bombs and cannons still resonate in parts of our world Songmakers Australia take the words of poets, soldiers, wives and sweethearts, who expressed their love, fears and longings in letters and songs, and honour the sacrifice of millions in the centenary year of the landings at Gallipoli. Songs by Mahler, Schumann, Kurt Weill, Australian composer Stuart Greenbaum’s poignant song cycle Letters to the Front, and indeed the famous song itself, by Simon and Garfunkel.

A dynamic interplay of song and chamber music.

Central Victoria’s largest and most exciting meeting place is being built to give our community the opportunity to participate in amazing experiences, to nurture imaginations and inspire creativity.

Every single dollar received through the Ulumbarra Theatre Donor Program helps us develop a place where we can welcome people from all walks of life, providing new opportunities to gather together for a diverse range of performances and experiences.

From making a small donation at the box office to major gifts and bequests, the Ulumbarra Theatre Donor Program gives any individual, organisation or business the opportunity to play a role in creating the finest facility and the best outcomes for performing arts, education and events in the Bendigo region.

Since mid-2013, more than $750,000 has been guaranteed by donors and sponsors,

allowing us to begin to unlock the full potential of this extraordinary new theatre.

Donors choosing to support Ulumbarra Theatre through participation in our Take Your Seat! program are recognised in the fabric of Ulumbarra Theatre – a plaque bearing the donor’s name and dedication is attached to an Ulumbarra Theatre seat and remains in place until 2035.

Our cherished donors play an important role as we strive to deliver innovative programming, present valuable community and educational opportunities and provide this state-of-the-art space with essential specialist equipment.
