Learning Strategy Defined
• A learning strategy is a person’s approach to learning and using information. (retrieved from http://kucrl.org/sim August 2015)• A learning strategy is an individual’s approach to complete a task.
(Freeman,2004)• A learning strategy is an individual’s way of organizing and using a
particular set of skills in order to learn content or accomplish other tasks more effectively and efficiently. (Schumaker & Deschler, 1992
Round Table-Why teach learning strategies?• Take turns generating responses to the question (one response
person). • Write each response on the Circle Map.• Continue passing the paper until time period ends.
Learning Strategies Curriculum
• Enables SWDs to acquire and generalize strategies and skills across academic and community settings to achieve annual goals.• Provides intensive individualized intervention in learning strategies.• Addresses academic skill deficits enabling students to learn strategies
to access the general curriculum.• Involves practical application of course requirements in home, school
and community settings for the purpose of practice, generalization and maintenance of skills.• Addresses a range of abilities within the population of SWDs
Fan-N-Pick
• Person #1 fans cards and says “Pick a card, any card.”• Person #2 picks a card and reads it aloud and allows 5 seconds of
think time.• Person #3 shares an idea for teaching the standard listed on the card.• Student #4 responds by praising and paraphrasing the response. • Rotate roles clock wise.

Learning about Learning Strategies
• Read each strategy.• Each team must list one content area activity where students can use
the strategy and how they will use it.• Person #1 gives idea, person #2 writes it, person #3 checks for
understanding, person #4 affirms.• Rotate clockwise to the next poster and rotate roles.
