Facility Weapons for Fighting the Flu 

Flu season is officiallyupon us and can beexpected to last throughMay, reaching its peakbetween December andFebruary. What are youdoing to ensure yourworkers are safe from an influenza outbreak? Whilecommon‐sense measures like washing hands andsanitizing surface areas should be encouraged,airborne particles carrying the flu virus cannot beignored. Research shows that such particles can travelmore than 200 feet away from the original cough orsneeze that set the particles flying. In fact, a study bythe Massachusetts Institute of Technology found thatsmall droplets can remain airborne long enough totravel through air ventilation systems.

Utilizing air filters with high MERV ratings, orpreferably HEPA filters, can help reduce the numberof airborne virus particles circulating within yourfacility. Another effective option is to install airpurifiers, which can seriously reduce airborne germsas well as cut down on allergens and odors. Some

ANSWER: There's an app forthat! UCLA's new, free AirForUapp uses GPS data to givemobile users their local airquality ratings. The app drawsdata from monitors set upnationwide and tracked by theEnvironmental ProtectionAgency. Users can also searchfor air quality in specific cities orzip codes, and push notificationsalert the user if air pollutionbecomes unhealthy for sensitivegroups.
