Assistant Principal—Mrs. Eva Kesidis

Welcome back and Happy New Year to ALL members of our College community. A very warm welcome to our Acting Principal,

Mr Tristan Lanarus, to our new teaching staff, Ms Yumin Zeng and Miss Linda La, to our Year 7 students and all new students who

have joined our College in 2015. I hope everyone is well rested and returned to school with lots of energy to make the most of

what is ahead.

It has been a great start to the school year with so many programs already in place.

Our VCE students (Year 11 and Year 12), commenced their academic year with sessions facilitated by Elevate Education, focusing

on study skills, time management and organisational strategies. The year 12 students also visited the Australian Catholic

University and participated in many worthwhile workshops and inspirational discussions with Academic staff. We will now look

forward to outstanding VCE results from the Class of 2015!

Some Important events and dates for your attention:

College Photo Day:

On Tuesday the 17th of February we will be having our College Photos taken. Envelopes with further information will be

distributed to students over the next couple of weeks.

Please note that the College will not be handling any money for the purchase of student photos and the envelopes must be given

directly to the photographers on our photo day. ALL students will be expected to have their individual photo taken for the

Student ID cards.

Immunisation Program :

Consent cards, for the School Immunisation Program, will be given to all students in years 7,8,9 and 10. It is most important that

parents and carers of students in the year levels mentioned, complete all details required, sign and return the Consent Cards to

the College by Friday the 13th of February. Please note that Vaccinations cannot be given to a student without a card signed by a

parent.

The first date for the Immunisations at the College is Friday the 27th of February and I would encourage every family to take the

opportunity to have their son or daughter immunised under the program, particularly as the Boostrix vaccine is free for the

students in years 8,9 and 10 only in 2015.

Parent Teacher Interviews- Advance Notice:

The first Parent Teacher Interviews for 2015 will be held on Thursday the 23rd of April. We look forward to meeting the parents

of all students at this very important College event.

Punctuality and Attendance:

To ensure that morning classes are not interrupted by students arriving late to school and that students are getting the most out

of their education, it is expected that ALL students arrive at school on time for a 9.00am commencement of period 1.

Students who are late to school must get a late pass from the Student Attendance Officer and Friday after school detentions will

be given to students for repetitive lateness.

Please support your children to get to school on time and assist our efforts to educate them of the importance of punctuality,

which is an expectation in all aspects of life.

Uniform Requirements:

All students are expected to wear the correct College Uniform items (Summer Uniform for Terms 1 and 4) and that includes

BLACK leather school shoes.

Friday after school detentions will be held for students who come out of school uniform on a regular basis. Families are asked to

support their students by acquiring the correct school uniform items and let us know if you need any assistance.

International Program:

Welcome back to all International students who returned to their home country over the summer period to see parents and

family. We understand how difficult it is to leave loved ones behind, after a few weeks of family life, and return to study abroad.

At Westall SC we are committed to assisting our students in every way possible and we are looking forward to having outstanding

results from everyone who chose to study in Australia!

A very warm welcome to all our new International students who came to our College and English Language Centre this year.

School Council Elections 2015

What is a school council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key

directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality

of education that the school provides for its students.

Who is on the school council?

There are three possible categories of membership: A mandated elected Parent category. More than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of

Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not

employed at the school.

A mandated elected DET employee category. Members of this category may make up no more than one third of the total

membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.

An optional Community member category. Its members are appointed by a decision of the council because of their special

skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.

The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the annual school

council elections.

Why is Parent membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.

Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their

children feel a greater sense of belonging.

How can you become involved?

The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more

people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.

In view of this, you might seriously consider

standing for election as a member of the school council

encouraging another person to stand for election.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?

No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the

school’s future.

What do you need to do to stand for election?

If you would like to be a School Council member

contact the Acting Principal Mr. Tristan Lanarus on 9546 3233 for further information.
