STS. ELIZABETH and ZECHARIAHParents of John the Baptist

First CenturyNovember 5

Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron and Zechariah a priest of the Old Law, of the priestly division of Abijah. As such Zechariah was entitled to serve at the Jerusalem temple. Their only sorrow was that they had no children as Elizabeth was barren and both were now old. Then the heavenly messenger archangel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah with the news that his wife Elizabeth will bear a son and his name shall be John, “he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mothers’ womb he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. . . to

Today’s feast honors the obscure as well as the famous – the saints each of us have known. An interesting challenge has been described by Brian Gleeson, CP (Passionist Congregation) on the meaning of the celebration for us today, as we follow Jesus on the way to perfection. Jesus has just given us his challenging advice on how to be good people. He has told us, in fact, how to be the best people we can be and about the qualities he wants to see in us, his followers. A quick focus on those qualities shows us that they are the very opposite of common and accepted standards and values. The world around us says, “Blessed are the rich, because they can have anything they want.” But Jesus says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” By ‘poor in spirit’ he means those who put their trust in God rather than money, and those who admit that it is not their income, possessions or bank account that make them rich in the eyes of God but the kind of people they are. The world says, ”Blessed are those who live it up and never stop having fun.” But Jesus says, “Blessed are those who mourn.” He means those who let themselves feel the misfortune, pain and sorrow of others, and who respond to them with understanding, sympathy, kindness, compassion, and practical assistance. The world says, ”Blessed are the assertive and aggressive that talk tough and act tough.” But Jesus says, “Blessed are the gentle.” Gentleness is not weakness but a form of strength. St. Francis de Sales used to say that you catch more flies with a spoon full

of sugar than a barrel full of vinegar. In Jesus’ book, there’s just no place for bullies and bullying. The world says, “Blessed are those who hunger for power, status and fame.” But Jesus says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for what is right.” The only power and status we really need is to keep living in God’s way and to keep doing the right thing. More satisfaction and contentment will be found in living with a good conscience than in hanging out with the movers and shakers and wannabees of this world. The world says, “Blessed are those who show no mercy and who take no prisoners.” But Jesus says, “Blessed are the merciful.” Happy are those who make allowances for the faults and sins of others, and whose greatness lays in their ability to forgive. They will receive mercy and forgiveness from God for their own sins. The world says, “Happy are those with clean fingernails, sparkling eyes, gleaming teeth and unblemished skin.” But Jesus says, “Blessed are those with clean hearts.” It is from the heart that all our thoughts, words and actions flow. If the heart is clean then everything that flows from it will be clean, as clean as water flowing from an unpolluted spring. The world says, “Blessed are those who get even and exact revenge.” But Jesus says, ”Blessed are the peacemakers.” Happy are those who spread understanding among people, those who welcome strangers and those who work for a more just and equal society. They are truly the children of God. The world says, “Blessed are those who lie and cheat and get away with it.” But Jesus says, ”Blessed are those who make a stand for what is right and true.” They may suffer for their stand, but the wounds they bear will be marks of honor and integrity. Jesus practiced what he preached. In his own person he was the Beatitudes. Living them day after day made him the thoroughly good person he was. It’s the same for us too. Today’s Feast of All Saints is less concerned with the canonized saints than about all the good and holy people who have ever lived. None of us, I feel sure, is aspiring to be or expecting to be a canonized saint. We don’t fantasize that one-day the pope will tell the world what saints we are. We don’t kid ourselves that our picture is going to pop up one day on the walls

of churches. Not for a moment do we imagine anyone saying prayers to us or carrying around pieces of us as relics. We don’t foresee any statues of us being carried high in processions. But in its document on the church, the Second Vatican Council wrote a chapter called, ‘The Universal Call to Holiness.’ So surely our feast today is reminding us of our deep-down longings to become better people than we currently are! Surely, too, it is reminding us that Jesus Christ can and will empower us to practice what he preached and to live what we believe! Surely then, we won’t ever want to stop receiving Him as our ‘Bread of Life’ in Holy Communion!

Remembering our beloved deadNovember is the month when we particularly remember our departed loved ones, visiting their graves, offering flowers and lighting candles for them. Many times, however, we miss out on the most important action – that of offering suffrages* for them. All of us would like to think that our loved ones are in heaven. But what if they are not? What if they still have to undergo purification before entering heaven? If they are in purgatory, they are actually suffering the pain of

Don’t miss this chance:A plenary indulgence for a departed loved one!

We can gain a plenary indulgence for our deceased relative or friend by simply visiting the cemetery on any day from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8!“An indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from the 1st to the 8th of November. It is partial on other days of the year.” (From “The Handbook of Indulgences”)For the indulgence to be plenary, we have to meet the following conditions in addition to praying at the cemetery for the soul:1. Sacramental confession (twenty days before or after the day of the Plenary Indulgence);2. Eucharistic Communion (preferably on the day of the

Plenary Indulgence);3. Prayer for the intentions of the Pope (preferably on the day

of the Plenary Indulgence);4. Absence from all attachment to sin, even venial sin;5. Having the intention to gain the indulgence for the soul;6. Being in the state of grace (on the day of the Plenary

Indulgence).(Reference: How to Help the Poor Souls in Purgatory by John; “Indulgences - General Conditions” www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/indulgences_conditions.htm)

sense, and most of all, the excruciating agony of being delayed from union with God. Sadly, they cannot help themselves or lessen their sufferings because their time to gain merit has ended at their death. But we can greatly help them through suffrages. If they are in heaven, our help is not wasted because they will receive “accidental glory”** and other souls in purgatory will benefit from it. Besides, our prayers give blessing not only to those we pray for, but to ourselves. If our loved ones are in purgatory, we can relieve their sufferings and hasten their entry into heaven by offering for them the following suffrages:1. Holy Mass (the best suffrage) 2. Prayers (Examples are: the Rosary

{the most powerful prayer after the Holy Mass}, Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic Adoration and the Divine Mercy Chaplet)

3. Almsgiving4. Reception of the Sacraments (esp.

Holy Communion)5. Sacrifices or Mortification 6. Joyful acceptance of our sufferings7. Any good work or study (done well)8. Indulgences gained for them (plenary

or partial). (Examples are: sign of the cross, visiting a cemetery, attending retreats)

Our departed loved ones will be eternally grateful to us when we help them reach heaven, not only in November, but all year-round. *Suffrage is a request to God that some

of the merits of our good works be applied to others (in this case, to the souls in purgatory in order to pay for their temporal debts).** Accidental glory is an increase in the intimacy with God and an increase in intercessory power. John Flader; “How to Help the Holy Souls in Purgatory” by Susan Tassone)

prepare a people fit to the Lord.” (Luke 1:15-17) This was to be John the Baptist’s special mission from God. Since much to their sorrow they had not been able to produce children all these years Zechariah’s disbelief was even greater so that he blurted out asking for a sign: “How shall I know this?” (Luke 1: 13) As punishment for his doubt Zechariah was struck dumb and Gabriel said that he would remain mute until after the child was born. Six months later the same heavenly messenger Gabriel was sent by God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth to Elizabeth’s cousin Mary. She was a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph of the house of David. Then to prove that nothing was impossible with God he told her, her cousin Elizabeth’s astonishing and joyful news: “And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren.” (Luke 1: 36-37) Upon hearing the news about Elizabeth, Mary hurriedly set out and travelled to the hill country of Judah to visit her. After remaining with Elizabeth for three months, Mary returned to her home. Elizabeth’s baby boy was born and it came time to name him after his traditional Jewish circumcision on the eight day. The neighbors couldn’t understand why Elizabeth insisted on going against the Jewish tradition naming him John instead of after his father as no one among his relatives had this name. But when they asked Zechariah for confirmation he asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name.” “Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed and he spoke blessing God.” (Luke 1: 63-64) He proclaimed his famous Canticle of Zechariah or Benedictus which is now part of the Church liturgy. It begins with the words “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has visited and redeemed His people.” Zechariah also prophesied his son John the Baptist’s ministry: “You, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways” (Luke 1: 76) . . . “to

give His people knowledge of salvation through forgiveness of their sins.” (The Benedictus) Nothing else is recorded of Elizabeth and Zechariah although tradition tells us that he was murdered in the Temple for refusing to tell Herod where his son John was to be found. It is said that Elizabeth died of old age.

She is the patron of pregnant women and those struggling with infertility. As one writer put it, “Her openness to God’s Divine Will should be an inspiration to all Christians to trust in the Will of the Lord.”
