Ph.D. Programs 2015 Informa3on Session
Three PhD Programs
• Community Health (housed at PSU)
• Epidemiology (housed at OHSU)
• Health Systems & Policy (housed at PSU)
Introduc@ons
School of Public Health Overview • Founda@on of 23 years as a collabora@ve public health program; renewed CEPH accredita@on, 2014 to 2021
• Together we: 1. Offer 3 PhD programs, 6 tracks leading to an MPH, and an on-‐
line graduate cer@ficate program 2. Serve 300 graduate students 3. Employ more than 60 core faculty and more than 70 affiliated
faculty and field experts 4. Provide students opportuni@es to gain real-‐world experience
in the field 5. Have graduated over 1,100 MPH students
4
Reasons for Our New School • Programs in public health:
• Typically smaller than our OMPH & our collec@ve research environment
• Less capacity, compared to Schools of PH, to aZract large funding opportuni@es
• Schools: average annual enrollment of 150 new MPH students (range 22-‐560) • Our program averages 91, about the 25 percen@le of Schools • Typical expression of a growing na@onal trend. In 2014:
• 51 Schools + 11 (now 12!) applicant ins@tu@ons • 110 Programs (including OMPH) + 24 applicants
5
Benefits of OHSU-‐PSU Collabora3on • Access to resources of two powerful, metro campuses
• Wealth of talented faculty • Extensive field and research experiences • Together, many local, state, na@onal, and interna@onal contacts and networks
• Enroll in courses offered in other units • Interact with public health professionals in a prominent
healthcare environment in Oregon’s most diverse city • Develop interprofessional skills needed as a future
member of the public health workforce
