A MOMENT WITH PASTOR JOHN

Shortly before we moved to one town, ghost hunters spent the night at the house across from the

church. The ghost hunters said they found incredible evidence of supernatural activity such as a

shadow which turned off their camera multiple times. Skeptical? Sure I am.

Strange part, though, was the number of past and current residents of that house who were part of

that church and talked without sensationalism of events in the house. Skeptical? Am I sure?

A book I’m reading for mentor group says that Western societies have learned there are not

invisible beings.1 Yet, we keep the idea around and keep telling stories about the supernatural. Our

culture creates a lot of talk about the supernatural during October. Admittedly, some of it silly. Yet,

don’t you have that nagging sense that there is more to life than what we see?

As Christians, that expectation of more than meets the eye is at the center of our faith. God is

invisible. New birth is unobservable. Christ events are from another time and another place we didn’t

see. Yet, I keep the faith and tell the story of a supernatural God who loves me.

More and more, people group me with the ghost hunters and call for a life based on what they see.

But God calls me deeper into the invisible, “Although you began with the Spirit, are you now trying to

finish by human effort?2 I was saved by supernatural power, why would God change the plan to

human power now? October makes a great time to check where my power comes from.

Pumpkin Patch

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these..., you did for me.” Matthew 25:40

It’s that time of the year again; the leaves are changing, the temperatures are dropping and the pumpkins

are arriving. Yep, by the time you are reading this, there is a good chance that the church lawn will be

covered in pumpkins again. The pumpkin patch has been a great ministry of our church, and we are

looking forward to continuing this ministry. We have several different chances for fellowship during the

patch and one of the greatest is the unloading process. I am always amazed at the turnout we have to

help unload the truck; I am very thankful for the support.

This year we are changing things up a little. The patch has really outgrown what the youth groups and

staff can handle. We have cut back on activities over the years because of this as well. We have

decided that this year the patch will be an all-church ministry. There are a few things that the youth run

as fundraisers, such as yard decorating and our annual soup supper, but the rest is open to everyone in

the church to participate. We have also decided to donate all the funds to Camp Lakeside; with the

exception of the few youth-specific activities and the 5K proceeds, which will go to the Western Kansas

Child Advocacy Center. We felt that the pumpkin patch is, as always, a great opportunity to help a

wonderful, Christ-led cause.

So what do we need from you? Volunteers! If you feel led to help work the pumpkin patch while it is

open, we need you! We are also looking for volunteers to read stories to the elementary school kids

during story time and also to help hand out snacks. We are all very busy but if you could find some time

to help with this ministry of the church, I guarantee you won’t regret it. We have some sign-up sheets in

the office, so you can stop by or call the office and we will sign you up. Looking forward to another great

year selling pumpkins and reaching out to our community.

Sole Hope

• On Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:00, the Friends Sunday school class invites all to join

them for a shoe-cutting party in the Family Room. Supper is

served from the church kitchen beginning at 5:30 p.m. Bring sharp

scissors if you have any! The project involves cutting plastic milk

jugs and denim from old jeans to provide shoe material for children in

eastern Uganda. The shoes help protect the children’s feet from

painful parasites. To learn more, contact Ann Hawkins or the church

office, or check out www.solehope.org.

Opportunities to Help

• Pumpkin Patch—join this orange outreach for Jesus! Sign up to be a Patch attendant, make cookies,

or tell stories to the school children, who take field trips to the Patch.

• Enjoy helping with little ones? We are looking for additional help in the nursery for Sundays

from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and during the 10:45 worship service, the 2nd Fridays of each month from 9:00-

11:00 a.m. during MOPS, and the 1st Mondays of each month from 4:00-5:00 p.m. during preschool

board meetings. If you are willing to help at any of these times or on a volunteer rotation, please let

Kristin Jessup know at 620-872-8901.

• Feel called to work with youth? We are looking for adults to co-lead the Acts 29 Sunday school

class (7th-12th grades) or C.H.A.O.S. youth group (7th-8th grades) on Wednesday nights. Leaders

will need Safe Gatherings certification. Contact Chad in the church office.

• Prefer working with adults? Contact Kari Talbert to see how you can help with adult ministry.

• Scrabble Fellowship: Christine Evans would enjoy having people come play Scrabble with her

at Park Lane Nursing Home.

• Roof replacement: Trustees are asking for donations to replace the church’s roof. The current

roof requires frequent patches to keep the rain out. A new roof would alleviate this chronic problem.

NURSERY NEWS

Be on the lookout for some exciting changes in the nursery this month! The existing nursery will be transitioned to an infant room geared toward babies, who can’t yet walk, and will contain age-appropriate toys and furniture. Nursing mothers and parents of babies this age will be encouraged to make use of our newly arranged Parent Room, which will contain a rocking chair, changing table, and crib for a private and quiet parent-child environment. The room just to the south of the existing nursery will become the new toddler nursery geared toward toddlers through four year-old’s. The addition of carpet and moving of toys from the existing nursery will make it the perfect place for this age group. Both nurseries will be equipped with a new check-in system that will be as easy as the touch of a button when parents drop off their children. As you walk by the nursery this month, take a peek to watch the transition!
