ULYSSES—We purchased Ulysses from M Dempsey in 2010. He had a very tidy and thick head of velvet for a two-year-old. What a background he had with Buller and Austin. He carried on with a huge 9.30kg at four years. Unfortunately Ulysses injured his spine during the winter and had to be put down, which is a big loss. His 25 2yr sons in 2012 averaged 4.0kg velvet.

WelcomeOn behalf of myself and Mel, I welcome you to our 26th Annual Arawata sale

This season has been a game of two halves with the first half ’s weather being exceptional, with the two year old stags dropping their buttons earlier than normal, but the last month of velvet growth up to cutting has been wet and cold. But that’s farming in Southland, where the weather always evens out.

The velvet market has had a slow start this season with the Chinese government tightening the regulations for importing velvet now that it is classified as a healthy functional food for human consumption requiring that the importers have to upgrade their facilities to comply with the new regulations. Korea still takes 60 percent of our volume and the market fundamentals are very good with increasing demand for velvet as a healthy food supplement, which along with the same future growth in China will place our industry in a good position for future growth.

Venison has had a well-deserved lift in prices this season, which is great for our industry and we have seen a large retention of hinds, which will enable our national herd to grow.

For this year’s sale we have a great line up of stags cutting up to 6.0 kg of velvet that is stylish and correct for what is needed for a market in which we are seeing a sizable difference in price between SAP and SANT grades. Last year’s two year olds averaged 4.0 kg of velvet. The four year and older velvet stags averaged 6.50 kg of first cut velvet with 78% of the SA velvet in the SAP, SAHeavy or SAT grades.

Please note that the EBVs for the stags and hinds is a two year velvet EBV not a mature velvet EBV. Some sires progeny have lower EBVs due to them coming from herds with no EBVs, which means that the new sires start at 0.00 until enough recorded progeny are born to correct it. So hopefully more breeders with velvet records will join Deer Select in the future.

The other aspect of Arawata’s breeding programme is the size of its English cross herd. We believe that size, growth rates, body conformation and fertility are very important attributes for any herd regardless of whether you are velvet or venison driven. The 12 month EBV gives a very good indication of a sires breeding potential in a new herd, many of the sire stags in this year’s sale have an EBV of +10 or higher which is great for maternal breeding. This year I have selected a small number of maternal sires, with lesser velvet attributes but great size and 12 month EBV’s for people who are not concerned about velvet for their replacement hind breeding programme.

Arawata is a strong supporter of Deer Select and would encourage more breeders to join and purchasers to gain an understanding of the effect of EBV’s on their own breeding plan.

The 2015 born stags at Arawata averaged 92 kg on 1st September 2016 of which 62% ranged from 90 to 110 kg. They went on to average 124 kg at 12 months (15/12/16) of which 72 % ranged from 120 to 150 kg.
