DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN A DIFFERENT FORMStevie Jordan posted his first-career double-double with 11 points and 11 assists on Jan. 17 at Siena, marking the first double-double with assists for a Rider player since Jonathan Thompson did it on Jan. 6, 2012, against Marist. The feat has been done just 11 times since the 1995-96 season, including six times by Rider Hall of Famer Deon Hames. Jordan, Thompson, Greg Burston and Marc Bayha turned the trick once each. All but Burston’s double-double, which featured rebounds and assists, were comprised of points and assists.

DOUBLE DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLEKahlil Thomas posted the first 12 double-doubles of his career in the last 22 games of 2015-16. In that span, Thomas averaged 14.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, up from his season averages of 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds. He’s compiled a league-leading nine double-doubles this season against Hartford, Fordham, Fairfield, Pacific, Drexel, Monmouth, Marist, Manhattan and Niagara.

STEVIE DOES IT AGAINStevie Jordan was named MAAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season following his 22-point, six-assist, five-rebound performance at Monmouth. He made 7-of-11 field-goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from long range in a team-high 39 minutes.

SPLINTERING THE OPPOSITIONLed by season highs of 15 points from Anthony Durham and 10 points from Kealen Washington-Ives, the Broncs’ bench outscored that of Niagara, 32-12, on Jan. 8. All told, the Broncs had five players in double figures for the sec-ond time this year. Joining Durham and Washington-Ives in double figures were Xavier Lundy (17), Jimmie Taylor (13) and Kahlil Thomas (12). The 15 points were also a career-high for Durham, who knocked down 4-of-6 shots, including 3-of-5 from long range, and all of his four free throws. Tyere Mar-shall (4 pts) and Xzavier Malone (3 pts) also contributed.

CARDIAC BRONCSRider was 5-0 this season in games decided by three points or less, prior to a 76-73 setback at Manhattan on Jan. 13. The Broncs defeated Wagner and Monmouth by three, Siena and Kennesaw State by two and earned a one-point win at North Carolina A&T. Rider has fended off the opposition’s chance to win or tie in the final seconds in each of the five.

FUN RUNAfter being outscored 14-2 to begin the game at Monmouth on Dec. 31, Rider went on a 33-6 run to establish a double-digit lead.

THE SEASON OF GIVINGStevie Jordan dished out at least five assists in eight-straight games to finish the month of December. He piled up a career-high 12 dimes against Ken-nesaw State, dished out nine against Siena, eight more at UMass and six apiece against Pacific, Drexel, North Carolina A&T and Monmouth. He also had five assists at NC State.

A ‘LIL AWARENESSKahlil Thomas did well to recognize that Jimmie Taylor’s shot with less than 10 seconds left in regulation at North Carolina A&T was going to fall short and streaked in for the game-winning putback on Dec. 18. Thomas then re-jected Aaron Scales’ attempt at a buzzer beater to secure the victory.

2016-17 Rider Men’s BasketballYOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN!Stevie Jordan was named MAAC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Dec. 19 after averaging 13.3 points, 8.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 50.0 percent (15-30) from the floor and 80.0 per-cent (8-10) from the free-throw line in the Broncs’ 3-0 week. Rider defeated Ken-nesaw State, Drexel and North Carolina A&T in the span. LEAVE IT TO STEVIEStevie Jordan scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor, including the go-ahead three-pointer to break a 79-79 tie in a 90-82 victory over Drexel on Dec. 16. Jordan also made all five of his free throws, dished out six assists, grabbed five rebounds and made two steals.

FIVE IN DOUBLE FIGURESJordan (26) led five Broncs in double figures against Drexel on Dec. 16. Jimmie Taylor (20), Norville Carey (14), Kahlil Thomas (11) and Xavier Lundy (11) also reached double digits. The Broncs had five in double figures twice last season - Jan. 17 against Iona and Feb. 14 against Niagara.

JIMMIE’S J’SJimmie Taylor scored a career-high 26 points on Dec. 14 against Kennesaw State. Taylor did his damage on 10-of-16 shooting and 6-of-9 from long range. He also made a career-high seven steals.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR THE SECOND TIMENorville Carey posted his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Kennesaw State on Dec. 14. Included were a conven-tional three-point play and a putback to turn a two-point deficit into a three-point lead that Rider would not relinquish late in the second half.

STEVIE’S BIG FINISHAfter picking up two quick fouls in the first minute of the game at Pacific and sitting for the majority of the period, Stevie Jordan scored all 12 of his points, including a pair of big three’s and 4-for-4 shooting from the free-throw line in the second half. He also dished out four of his six assists in the second half and didn’t commit a turnover all game in the 73-66 win.

STEVIE LEAVES IT OFFStevie Jordan dished out a season-high 12 assists in the Broncs’ 81-79 victory over Kennesaw State on Dec. 14. The 12 assists are tied with Deon Hames for most dimes by a Bronc in a single game in at least the last 21 seasons, as far back as full game-by-game statistics are available. Hames compiled 12 assists on three occasions in the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons. The Rider record book shows Norm Hobbie as the single-game record holder with 18 assists against Lehigh in the 1975-76 season. The last Bronc to reach double-digit assists prior to Jordan was Jonathan Thompson, who did it twice in 2011-12 (11 vs. Marist 1/6/12; 10 vs. Niagara - 2/5/12).

FRESHMAN FEEDS, SENIORS STEP UPFreshman Stevie Jordan dished out a then-season-high nine assists and seniors Xavier Lundy and Norville Carey did the rest in a 71-69 win over Siena on Dec. 5. Lundy scored a season-high 20 points, including 16 in the first half, and Carey add-ed his first double-double as a Bronc with 14 points and 13 rebounds, matching his career-high.

FRENETIC FRESHMEN FINISHFreshmen Dimencio Vaughn, Stevie Jordan and Tyere Marshall were instrumental in the Broncs’ second-half comeback against Wagner on Nov. 26. The trio combined for 19 points, seven rebounds, three steals and a block in the final 10 minutes of regulation, during which time the Broncs turned a nine-point deficit into a three-point victory. All three fin-ished the game in double figures scoring, with Vaughn pacing the trio with 13 points and 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double. Jordan added 12 points and five assists, burying the go-ahead jumper with 5:39 left to give Rider a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Marshall scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds for the game, including a pivotal putback and bucket in the post on consecutive Rider possessions to twice give the Broncs a three-point cushion.

X-ACTLY HOW YOU WANT TO BEGIN Xavier Lundy scored in double figures in the first half in each of the Broncs’ first three games and has reached double digits in five of six games. He scored 14 first-half points in the season opener at Hampton, before adding 12 in the opening stanza at Hartford. He then scored 11 points at USF, before scoring eight points in the second half to finish the Fordham game with 10 points. He also scored 10 points against Fairfield, pushing his season average to 12.3 points per game. DOMINATION OF HAWK NATIONThe Broncs dominated the boards against Hartford, 49-33 overall and 19-7 on the offensive glass. Rider also enjoyed edges in second-chance points (23-7) and in the paint (44-26). Kahlil Thomas led the Broncs with 13 boards, while seven of Nor-ville Carey’s nine rebounds came on the offensive glass. DIMENCIO DROPS IN 15A game after being held scoreless on just one field-goal attempt, freshman Dimencio Vaughn came out firing at Hartford, dropping in 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He also was active on the defensive end, swiping four steals and blocking one shot in 17 minutes.

JORDAN EARNS TOP ROOKIE BILLINGStevie Jordan earned MAAC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 14 after scoring 14 points and dishing out five assists in his collegiate debut at Hampton. The 14 points are the most by a Rider freshman making his collegiate debut in the 21 years from which full box scores are available. The next closest Bronc on record was Bob Fisicaro, who scored 13 points in his Rider debut, Nov. 16, 1995 against Temple.

READY TO RUN IN 2017-18A pair of Division I transfers will have three years of eligibility for the Broncs beginning in 2017-18 after sitting out this season. Devine Eke is a 6-foot-7 forward from Plainfield, NJ, who spent his freshman year at Maine. He led the Black Bears in rebounding (6.8 rpg.), field-goal percentage (.612) and blocks (1.7 bpg.), while scoring 9.5 points per game. Fred-erick Scott is also a 6-foot-7 forward from Munster, IN, who spent his freshman year at DePaul. In the spring of 2015, Scott averaged 19.6 points and 9.4 rebounds in the Adidas Gauntlet Series in Dallas, playing in eight games for the Milwaukee Runnin’ Rebels U17 team against some of the nation’s top prep players. Freshman Jordan Allen (guard, 6-3) is also sitting out the 2016-17 season with an academic redshirt. Allen was the Delaware Gatorade Player of the Year last season, aver-aging over 26 points per game.

A WINNING TRADITIONSince joining the MAAC in 1998-99, Rider is 201-160 (.557) in MAAC games, behind only Iona and Siena in all-time win-ning percentage among schools with at least 100 games played.

Kevin Baggett returns for his fifth season as the Rider University head basketball coach in 2016-17.

In his first year as head coach, ‘Baggs’ was a finalist for two differ-ent National Coach of the Year Awards, the Ben Jobe Award and the Joe B. Hall Award.

Baggett took a team with just two returning starters and six total letterwinners that was picked to finish seventh in the 10-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2013 and finished in second place.

He guided the 2012-13 Broncs to a 19-win season, the most by a Rider rookie head coach since Bob Greenwood led Rider to a 20-win season in 1962-63. The only other Rider basketball coach to compile 19 wins in his rookie campaign was the legendary Clair Bee.

In 2013-14 Coach Baggett took a young team and produced two All-MAAC performers along with a MAAC All-Rookie team selection. His 2013-14 squad was ranked eighth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage and was 51st in Division I in three-point field goals made.

In 2014-15, Baggett took a squad that was picked seventh in the MAAC and guided the team to a 21-win season and a second place finish in the conference, earning MAAC Coach of the Year honors as Rider was selected to play in the College Basketball Invitational tournament. Baggett was a finalist for the Ben Jobe National Coaching Award for the second time in three years and he was named the UPS All-District 1 Coach of the Year.

Baggett was named the Rider men’s basketball head coach at a standing room only press conference on May 24, 2012.

“This was a popular decision,” Rider Director of Athletics Don Harnum said at that time. “It was also a convenient decision, but let me make it very clear, this was not a hire of convenience. This was a hire because I firmly believe and am very confident that Kevin is the right person to lead this program in the future.”

With an emphasis on defense, Baggett’s Broncs led the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage defense in 2012-13 and was second in overall field goal percentage defense, third in blocks and fourth in points allowed.

The 2016-17 season is the 11th for Baggett as a member of the Rid-

er staff, serving two as an assistant coach and four as an associate head coach. In the last 10 years, Rider has compiled 178 wins, the most in the Metropolitan New York/New Jersey area. Siena is the only MAAC team with more wins in those 10 years.

Baggett has coached on the Division I level for 21 years and has been on the Rider staff since the 2006-07 season.

Baggett hails from Burlington, NJ and was a 2006 inductee into the South Jersey Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Saint Joseph’s 1985-86 basketball team that compiled a 26-6 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Saint Joseph’s in June, 1989.

Baggett came to Rider from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where he served as assistant coach from 2004-06. At UMBC Baggett recruited an America East All-Rookie Team mem-ber who went on to earn First Team All-Conference honors three times, as well as a pair of transfers from the Colonial Athletic Association who went on to earn All-America East honors.

Baggett has also served as an assistant coach at James Madison, Howard, Western Kentucky and Coastal Carolina.
