TAYLOR MAKING HIS MARK FOR ROCKETS IN FINAL COLLEGIATE SEASON Senior Steve Taylor, Jr. has made his presence felt for Toledo immediately after sitting out the 2015-16 campaign following his transfer from Marquette University. Taylor, who leads the team with 15.0 rpg and 3.5 apg and ranks second with 18.0 ppg, tallied a career-high 22 points and Savage Arena-record 23 rebounds vs. Youngstown State (Nov. 15) Taylor averaged 5.9 points for Marquette as a junior in 2014-15 and ranked second on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game in 22.1 minutes per game. A starter in 14 contests, Taylor notched career highs in points (20), field goals (9) and minutes (35) to go along with a team-high seven boards at No. 20 Ohio State (Nov. 18). He also grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds vs. St. John’s (March 4) the most by a Marquette player in BIG EAST play since Lazar Hayward had 17 vs. DePaul on Jan. 24, 2009. Taylor was a first-team all-state selection by the Associated Press and the Chicago Tribune in 2012 at Chicago’s Simeon High School, which he helped win three-straight state championships and a 63-3 overall record in two years as a full-time starter. Taylor averaged 16.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 3.0 assists per game as a senior and was ranked as 73rd nationally in Scout.com recruiting rankings.

Dzierzawski has scored in double digits in each of his first two games and ranks third on the team in scoring with 16.0 ppg and is shooting 55.0 percent (11-of-20). Dzierzawski played for one of the nation’s top junior-college squads, as he helped Mober-ly (MO) Area Community College to the 2016 NJCAA national tourney. He scored a team-best 15.2 ppg, to go along with 3.1 rpg, 2.3 apg and 1.2 spg. He also tallied a 46.1 FG%, 27.3 three-point FG% and 82.6 FT%.

He also led the team with a 62.1 FG% (59-of-95) and ranked third in offensive rebounds (55) and FT made (73). SOPHOMORE DUO READY TO TAKE ANOTHER STEP Sophomores Nate Navigato and Jaelan Sanford will each look to build on solid rookie campaigns in their first seasons in Rocket uniforms last year. Navigato is averaging 7.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg in his first two games this season, while Sanford is averaging 8.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg. A Geneva, IL native, Navigato averaged 8.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg and 1.3 apg in 22.8 mpg last year and ranked fourth on the team in scoring. He also paced the Rockets in 3PTFG% (38.4) and FT% (83.3) and ranked second in three-point field goals made (61) and three-point field-goal attempts (159). Sanford ranked fifth on the team last year with 8.2 ppg and was third with 81.4 FT% (48-of-59). The Evansville, IN native also ranked third with 48 treys and 137 three-point field-goal attempts and shot 35.0 percent from three-point range.

CLEANING THE GLASS Toledo did a solid job on the boards last season and ranked fourth in the MAC with its plus-3.1 rebounding margin. Former Rocket Nathan Boothe and senior Zach Garber led the way with 9.0 and 4.9 rpg, respectively. Jordan Lauf joined Boothe as the Rockets’ top offensive rebounder with 1.9 offensive rpg to rank tied for 13th in the conference. UT has won the battle of the boards in each of its first two games and has a plus-4.0 rebounding margin. Toledo, which led the conference with a plus-3.9 rebounding margin in 2014-15, has ranked in the top four of the MAC in rebounding margin in each of the last three years. UT’s plus-2.4 rebounding margin in the 2013-14 season marked the first time that the Rockets grabbed more rebounds than their opponents for an entire season since the 2001-02 campaign.

KNOCKING THEM DOWN AT THE CHARITY STRIPE Seniors Jordan Lauf (7-of-7) and Jonathan Williams (9-of-9) have yet to miss at the free-throw line this season. Junior Daniel Dzierzawski is the only other Rocket shooting over 80 percent with an 81.8 conversion rate (9-of-11).

SHARPSHOOTERS UT ranked second in the MAC with its 46.0 field-goal percentage last year, trailing only Ohio’s mark of 47.4 percent. The Rockets topped the conference in shooting the previous two seasons, posting a 47.0 mark in 2014-15 and a 46.5 FG% in 2013-14. Toledo ranked fourth in the MAC last season with its 36.4 3PTFG% and fifth with 8.2 treys per game. a 72.6 mark in 2011-12 and ranking eighth nationally in 2012-13 with a school-record 76.1 clip.

KNAPKE SEES FIRST OFFICIAL ACTION AS ROCKET Redshirt freshman forward/center Luke Knapke saw his first official action for the Rockets in Saturday’s season opener at Saint Joseph’s after sitting out last season as a redshirt. After grabbing one rebound in nine minutes of action vs. the Hawks, he tallied six points and dished out two assists in 10 minutes vs. Youngstown State (Nov. 15). A Maria Stein, OH native, Knapke earned Ohio Hoops Division IV second-team all-state honors as senior at Marion Local High School.

BENCH ADDITION A familiar face to Mid-American Conference fans joined the Rockets’ coaching staff last spring when Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced the hiring of former MAC Player of the Year DeAndre Haynes to his staff. Haynes comes to Toledo after spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach for the Golden Flashes. Haynes is KSU’s all-time leader in assists (625) and steals (229) and became the first Golden Flash to earn the MAC’s top player honor in 2006. An Honorable Mention All-American that year as well, Haynes led Kent State to the MAC regular season and tournament titles and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

HITTING THE BOOKS Toledo received the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award last summer with their 3.16 grade-point average in the 2015-16 campaign ranking 10th nationally. The award is in its fourth year of existence, and the Rockets have re-ceived the award in two of the last three years. UT is also the only Mid-American Conference school to be honored this season. The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes NCAA and NAIA men’s basketball teams that earned a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better throughout the 2015-16 academic year. Of the 129 teams to make the list, only 24 were NCAA Division I-affiliated programs. Other NCAA Division I schools posting a 3.0 GPA in the 2015-16 academic year were Ameri-can, Belmont, Bethune-Cookman, Bradley, Butler, Denver, Duke, Eastern Washington, Harvard, Holy Cross, Louisville, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota State, Northwestern, Northwestern State, Quinnipiac, Rice, Seton Hall, South Carolina, Utah Valley, Vanderbilt, UW-Milwaukee and Yale.

HITTING THE BOOKS II The Rockets registered a 3.0 grade-point average last spring for the fifth time in the last six semesters. The Rockets notched a 3.086 GPA in the recently completed spring semester, and their roster heading into the 2016-17 campaign possesses a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Zach Garber, Jordan Lauf and Luke Knapke led the way by earning a spot on the University’s Dean’s List. Also posting 3.0 GPA’s or better in the spring semester were Nathan Boothe and Steve Taylor, Jr., junior Jonathan Williams and freshmen Fred John Jr., Nate Navigato and Jaelan Sanford. In addition, the Rockets’ Academic Progress Rate score from the four-year period from 2011-12 to 2014-15 is 985, a figure that is tied for second in the Mid-American Conference.

ON THE HORIZON Toledo will continue a nine-day road trip with a visit to Murfreesboro, TN to face Middle Ten-nessee (2-0) on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The Rockets will then compete in the Challenge in Music City in Nashville, TN on Friday-Sunday, Nov. 25-27. During the three-day tourney, UT will face three schools — Evansville (1-1), Middle Tennessee (2-0) and UNC-Wilmington (2-0) — that each won 25 games last year.
