Bemidji State (picked to finish sixth by the coaches and media) and Alabama Huntsville (picked to finish ninth) are both 2-0-0, having swept Bowling Green (coaches' and media preseason favorite) and Ferris State (slated for fourth), respectively. For their efforts last weekend, the Beavers were named the national Team of the Week by College Hockey News. Two-time defending MacNaughton Cup winner Minnesota State is also 2-0 after sweeping 2015-16 co-champs Michigan Tech. Fashionably Late: Lake Superior State will become the 10th and final WCHA team to officially start its season, hosting Michigan State in the regular season opener for both teams. The Lakers are looking to build upon their six-win improvement a year ago. Mike Richter Award Watch List: Five WCHA goaltenders are among the 20 named to the 2016-17 Mike Richter Award Watch List, as announced last week by Let's Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation. Bemidji State junior Michael Bitzer, Lake Superior State junior Gordon Defiel, Minnesota State senior Cole Huggins, Bowling Green junior Chris Nell and Northern Michigan sophomore Atte Tolvanen are all under consideration for the award, which annually honors the top netminder in D-I hockey. Polling Place: Minnesota State moved up five spots to No. 14 in the USCHO.com poll, while Bowling Green remained in at No. 20. (both are also receiving votes in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine rankings). Tradition Starts Here: Four (4) of the nation's top-15 winningest teams over the past three seasons play in the WCHA - the highest representation among that upper 25% of programs of any D-I conference since realignment (Hockey East and the NCHC each have three teams apiece, the Big Ten and ECAC Hockey both have two each and Atlantic Hockey has a single program). Minnesota State is tied for third nationally with 78 wins, Ferris State is 11th with 67, Michigan Tech is tied for 12th with 66 and Bowling Green is 15th with 63. BY THE NUMBERS 10: Years had passed since Northern Michigan's last five-point game, before junior forward Robbie Payne tallied two short-handed goals and three assists last Saturday against Wisconsin. Prior to Payne's outburst, the last NMU five-point effort belonged to former NHL-er Mike Santorelli (2g-3a in a 5-2 win at Omaha on Oct. 21, 2006). 11a: Career shutouts for Minnesota State senior Cole Huggins, a Minnesota State record and most among active NCAA goaltenders. He reached the mark with a 25-save blanking of Michigan Tech on Saturday night. 11b: Game-winning goals in 2015-16 for Lake Superior State's freshmen, tied for most among rookie classes in the NCAA. That group (Matt McArdle, Diego Cuglietta, Jake Hand, C.J. Hayes, Owen Headrick, Mitch Hults, Anthony Nellis, Josh Nenadal and Gage Torrel) begins their sophomore campaigns this weekend. THE WEEK AHEAD UP Home Openers: On a weekend in which it will welcome back NHL All-Star Game MVP John Scott and honor last year's Cup co- champs, Michigan Tech hosts Alabama Huntsville. After splitting a series with Wisconsin in Green Bay, Northern Michigan returns to Marquette for its home opener against Bemidji State. Top-15 Clash in Mankato: After an impressive sweep last weekend, No. 14 Minnesota State continues its season-opening homestand by welcoming No. 7/5 St. Cloud State of the NCHC to the Verizon Wireless Center. Brice Alaska Goal Rush: Alaska hosts the ninth annual Brice Alaska Goal Rush, welcoming Alaska Anchorage, Canisius (Atlantic Hockey) and Omaha (NCHC) to the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. More Nonconference Action: No. 20 Bowling Green faces NCHC foe Western Michigan in a home-and-home beginning Friday in Ohio, Ferris State welcomes No. 13 Michigan to a sold-out Ewigleben Arena for a single game Saturday, and Lake Superior State hosts Michigan Tech at Taffy Abel Arena in the Great Lake State Weekend. IN MEMORIUM In memoriam of the late Oliver “Butch” Mousseau, the men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Associaon (WCHA) will rere his officials’ jersey number 12, while on-ice officials will wear a specially-designed “12” scker on their helmets throughout the 2016-17 season. Payne had an outstanding opening weekend, tying for the WCHA lead with three goals and six points as Northern Michigan split a pair of games with Wisconsin at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The junior from Gaylord, Mich. helped the Wildcats to a 3-2, opening-night victory, as his second-period, power-play goal snapped a 1-1 tie and gave NMU a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Saturday night, Payne became the first Northern Michigan player to record a five-point game in 10 years, tallying two goals and three assists. Both of his goals were short-handed, the second was unassisted and both tied the game, once at 1-1 in the first period and then again at 4-4 late in the second. Although the Wildcats eventually lost a wild, 6-5 decision, Payne finished the night with a +4 rating. This is Payne’s first career WCHA weekly award. Honorable Mention:• Daniel Brickley, So., D, Minnesota State -

Racked up a goal and five assists – including on all three Maverick goals Friday – in MSU’s sweep of then-No. 17 Michigan Tech.

Huggins backstopped then-No. 19 Minnesota State to a season-opening sweep of then-No. 17 Michi-gan Tech, stopping 45-of-46 shots in the two wins. His .978 save percentage and 0.50 goals-against average both led the WCHA and ranked fourth na-tionally, while he was one of seven NCAA goalten-ders – and the only WCHA netminder – to post a shutout last weekend. The senior from Centennial, Colo. turned aside 20-of-21 shots in Friday’s 3-1 win before posting a 25-save blanking in Saturday’s 4-0 triumph. Saturday’s shutout was the school-re-cord 11th of Huggins’ career (most among active NCAA goaltenders), while he now ranks sixth in Minnesota State history with 40 collegiate victo-ries. This is Huggins’ third career WCHA weekly award, including one Rookie of the Week honor during his 2013-14 freshman campaign.

Honorable Mention:• Michael Bitzer, Jr., G, Bemidji State - Stopped

2016-17 Wcha preseason polls

boWling green Tabbed as preseason FavoriTe byWcha coaches and media

If the league’s coaches and media are correct, Bowling Green will end the 2016-17 regular season by hoisting its first MacNaughton Cup as champion of the men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Falcons were tabbed as the league favorite in both the Mankato Free Press WCHA Coaches’ and the Bemidji Pioneer WCHA Media preseason polls.

The four schools that made the WCHA one of just two Division I conferences (along with Hockey East) to have at least four, 20-win teams in 2015-16 sit atop both polls in identical order: Bowling Green, followed by reigning MacNaughton Cup co-champions Michigan Tech and Minnesota State, and defending Broadmoor Trophy winner Ferris State. The four programs picked to hold home ice as the league’s new, on-campus postseason tournament begins next March are all among the top-15 nationally for wins since opening night of the 2013-14 season, with the Mavericks (76 victories) ranking fourth, the Bulldogs (67) tied for 10th, the Huskies (66) in 12th and the Falcons (63) placing 15th.

Demonstrating the competitiveness that is a WCHA hallmark, all four programs received first-place votes in the media poll, while Bowling Green (8) and Michigan Tech (2) earned the coaches’ nods.

Spots five through seven were also the same in both polls, with Northern Michigan, Bemidji State and Lake Superior State, respectively, expected to be vying for playoff positioning. Last season, the Wildcats posted their highest conference win total and finish (12 victories and fifth place) since the 2009-10 season, the Beavers won their most games (17) since 2011-12, and the Lakers enjoyed a six-win improvement behind one of the nation’s top-scoring freshmen classes.

WCHA coaches picked Alaska Anchorage to grab the league’s eighth and final playoff spot, ahead of Alabama Huntsville and Alaska. The media poll has the Nanooks finishing eighth and the Seawolves 10th, with the Chargers again ninth.

Ferris State senior forward Gerald Mayhew was the coaches’ and media’s choice as preseason Player of the Year. The Wyandotte, Mich. native ranked third in the league scoring race with 25 points (9g-16a) in WCHA play last year, while his 41 points overall (16g-25a) paced the conference. He ended his campaign by recording a point in five of six postseason contests (10 total), helping the Bulldogs to the NCAA West Regional final with five goals (including two game-winners) and five assists.

Minnesota State forward Parker Tuomie (coaches’ choice) and Ferris State defensemen Cameron Clarke (media pick) split the preseason Rookie of the Year votes. Tuomie, a native of Germany, finished 11th in the United States Hockey League (USHL) scoring race last season, scoring 54 points (30g-24a) for the Sioux Falls Stampede. Clarke was selected by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (136th pick overall) of the 2016 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. He was named the 2015-16 North American Hockey League (NAHL) Defenseman of the Year following a standout season in which he tallied 50 points (9g-41a) in 59 games for the Lone Star Brahmas.

• Bowling Green has won its last three consecutive home-openers at the BGSU Ice Arena. Last season, the Falcons downed in-state rival Ohio State 2-0, while in 2014 they beat Miami 3-2, and back in 2013 the Falcons rallied for a 4-3 win over Ohio State to open the season.

• In Western Michigan, Bowling Green faces an opponent the Falcons formerly played on a yearly basis as members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, but this will be the two teams' second match-up since the league dissolved. BGSU is 71-57-7 all-time against the Broncos. Last season, the Falcons fell to WMU 4-1 in October, before dropping a narrow 1-0 final at the Huntington Center in Toledo on Dec. 30 to the Broncos. In 2012-13, WMU went 2-1-1 in four games, including two wins in Kalamazoo. In fact, the Falcons are 0-6-1 at Western Michigan in Chris Bergeron's tenure and have come away without a win in nine straight Kalamazoo meetings.

• Senior Matt Pohlkamp played in his 122nd career game Saturday at Bemidji State. As the active career leader for the Bowling Green squad, Pohlkamp leads four current Falcons who have 100+ games of collegiate experience, which includes Sean Walker (121), Pierre-Luc Mercier (119), and Kevin Dufour (115).

• Mitch McLain now joins Matt Pohlkamp on the career records watch list for Bowling Green. McLain and Pohlkamp each tally three career shorthanded goals, while the all-time high for the program is nine, set by Andy Gribble from 1984-88. McLain’s third career shorty had tied up the Falcons with the Beavers on Saturday night at one goal apiece, although Bowling Green ultimately fell 4-1 to the WCHA rival on the road. With the goal, McLain is tied for first overall in the WCHA, as well as tied for second in the NCAA statistical charts.

• Although the Falcons were unable to capitalize on the power play this past weekend, Bowling Green held Bemidji State to 2-12 on the man-advantage across the 120 minutes of play. The Falcons racked up 11 shots on its 13 power play opportunities, while the Beavers tallied 17 shots on the 12 attempts. With the defensive efforts, Bowling Green killed penalties at a mark of 83.30 percent, matching this weekend’s opponent Western Michigan at the same odds on the penalty kill.

• With increased success, the BGSU Ice Arena has seen more and more fans line up for BG hockey games. A year ago, Bowling Green played in front of crowds exceeding 3,000 fans on eight occasions, doubling the four times from the 2015-15 campaign. Although the program averaged 2,549 fans per game, the team set a season-high attendance mark against Ferris State on Feb. 27, 2016 with 4,613. The home opener at the Madhouse on Mercer brought in a crowd of 3,022 against Ohio State last season.

• A sophomore forward from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Stephen Baylis tops the Falcons stat sheets with one goal and one assist through the first two games of the season. By notching the lone goal against the Beavers on Friday, then by assisting McLain in his third career shorthanded goal, Baylis had a hand in both goals the Falcons scored on the weekend. Baylis’ 1.00 points per game ranks him 73rd in the NCAA.

• Ferris State announced on Oct. 5 that Saturday night’s (Oct. 15) home hockey game against the Michigan Wolverines was officially sold out. This marks the third consecutive home sell-out in a match up with the Wolverines. Two years ago, the Bulldogs opened their season at home versus the Maize and Blue and came away triumphant with a 4-3 victory on Oct. 4, 2014 in front of a sold out crowd. Ferris State played to a 3-3 draw on Dec. 1, 2012 against Michigan at Ewigleben Ice Arena, a night after winning 5-0 over the Wolverines. Four of the last five meetings in Big Rapids between the Bulldogs and Wolverines have been played in front of sold out crowds. The Bulldogs have officially posted 20-plus sellouts overall in the last four years and the “Dawg Pound” student section has recorded 80-plus sellouts to date.

• With Chad McDonald’s goal at Western Michigan on 10/7, the senior became the first Bulldog to score against every Division I College hockey team in Michigan (Other than Ferris State) since Garrett Thompson (2010-2014). The two are the only Bulldogs in over 20 years to accomplish the feat, as Ferris State went 18 years between meetings with the Michigan Tech Huskies. In addition to McDonald’s feat, he has also registered an assist against all but one of the Michigan college hockey programs, as the Bulldogs prepare to take on the Michigan Wolverines.

• Redshirt freshman forward Craig Pefley has now totaled six assists in his first four games of 2016-17. Most recently, Pefley assisted on Chad McDonald’s first goal of the season on Friday (Oct. 7) at Western Michigan. The St. Clair, Mich. native played in just one game last year due to injury and was given a medical redshirt. Pefley’s six assists – most in the NCAA – have him tied for third in the nation in total points.

• With schedule changes due to the new WCHA playoff format, Ferris State will play six total home games in October. This marks the most home games the Bulldogs will play in any one month during the 2016-17 regular season. Ferris State will play nine total contests over 29 days to open NCAA play, which is also the most they will play in any one month in the 2016-17 season.

• Ferris State has dressed all of the seven freshmen skaters that they brought in for the 2016-17 season over the course of the first four games, with every one of them playing in multiple contests. Taylor Fernandez earned top line billing against the Western Michigan Broncos, and earned his first collegiate point on Oct. 7 at Lawson Ice Arena. Defensemen Joe Rutkowski and Nate Kallen have also notched one assist apiece to start their collegiate careers. Chris Allemon, Dominic Lutz, Jason Tackett and Cameron Clarke have all dressed in multiple games and are in search of their first collegiate points, but have seen significant action in the opening four games of the season. Clarke was the runner-up for Preseason WCHA Rookie of the Year, and was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

• For the first time since the 1995-96 campaign, Ferris State will play all six Division I college hockey opponents in the state of Michigan in a single season. The Bulldogs will face all but Michigan Tech at least once at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids. FSU will play in 12 contests against the six schools, with seven of the 12 coming at home. The Michigan-school schedule is front-loaded, with all seven of those home games taking place before November 20. The Bulldogs regularly played with all of Michigan’s college hockey teams while they were a member of the CCHA with the exception of Michigan Tech, who have competed in the WCHA since 1984. The Bulldogs defeated Michigan, Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan and Michigan State in each of their last games at Ewigleben Ice Arena. Michigan State has gone the longest in between visits to Big Rapids, as the Spartans last played at Ewigleben on Jan. 5, 2013.

• Troy Loggins and Darien Craighead netted their first collegiate goals during the Wisconsin series.

• Northern Michigan reached the five-goal plateau for the first time since Feb. 6, 2016 against Alaska Anchorage in Oct. 8's 6-5 loss.
