1. Introduction
This document comprises the Rosderra Irish Meats Annual Environmental
Report for the site located at Edenderry, Co. Offaly (P0180-02) and covers the
operations at the site during 2016.
Rosderra Irish Meats is a privately owned company which has its registered
head office in Edenderry Co. Offaly. The site at Edenderry was originally built
in 1990 by Master Pork and officially opened in 1991 as Master Pork. In 1992,
Avonmore Foods Plc. acquired Master Pork and the Edenderry facility became
part of the Avonmore Pigmeat business, known as Irish Country Meats.
Following a merger between Avonmore Plc. and Waterford Foods Plc. the
Edenderry facility came under control of the newly formed Glanbia Meats Ltd.
Following a management buy-out in March 2008, the company changed its
name to Rosderra Irish Meats Group.
On October 1st 2008, Rosderra Irish Meats had its IPPC Licence Transfer
Request Approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for Licence
No. P0180-02.
Rosderra Irish Meats, Edenderry operates a state of the art pig slaughtering and
processing facility. The site processes involves cutting and boning of pork with
a packing area, despatch area with loading bays also on site.
In February 2014 Rosderra Irish Meats became the 40th verified member of the
Bord Bia Origin Green Sustainability Programme, being the first pork processor
in Ireland to do so. At the heart of Origin Green is a plan which encourages
food companies to engage directly with the challenges of sustainability;
reducing energy inputs, minimizing carbon footprint and lessening the overall
impact on the environment.
Rosderra Irish Meats have highlighted 4 target areas for reduction as part of its
Origin Green Sustainability Programme:
P0180-02 2016 AER, March 2017
Energy
CO2 emissions
Water
Waste
In 2017 Rosderra will launch phase two of its Origin Green Programme, the
next three year programme. Phase two will focus on similar targets as phase
one, but will also include more social sustainability targets and initiatives with
employees but also with local communities
One of our Core Values as a company is “Continuous Improvement In
Everything We Do”. Rosderra apply this principal to all aspects of our business,
including Environmental Management and Sustainability. Being a verified
member of Origin Green further proves Rosderra Irish Meats Group's
commitment to conducting its business in a manner consistent with protecting
the environment.
The primary environmental emissions at the plant relate to the discharge of
treated wastewater and the generation of organic waste as sludge from the onsite
wastewater treatment plant. Environmental management on site is achieved
through a structured Environmental Management System (EMS), combined
with its Origin Green Sustainability plans and targets.

3. Waste Management Record
In 2015 Rosderra Irish Meats, as part of our Origin Green Waste Management
initiative, launched a company-wide segregation and recycling programme in an
effort to reduce the volume of waste going to landfill and to increase the
percentage of waste in which we send to recycling and recovery facilities.
Through hard work, determination and co-operation with our waste contractor,
Rosderra Irish Meats Edenderry was certified by Greyhound Commercial as
having “Zero Waste to Landfill Status”.
100% of all non-recyclable General Waste collected onsite is now sent to
Greyhound facility at Crag Avenue, Clondalkin Industiral Estate, Dublin 22 and
is destined to be processed as Refuse Derived Fuel.
For 2017, we are planning to further expand and improve on our Waste
Management Programme, by looking towards Waste Minimisation. We are
working with our suppliers to reduce unnecessary waste packaging coming to
site. We are also planning to review resources on site to ensure they are
effectively and efficiently utilised to minimise the volumes of waste which we
generate on site.
For 2017 we are investigating further waste segregation opportunities, in the
hope of reducing the level of General Waste leaving the site.
In 2017 Rosderra will launch phase two of its Origin Green Programme, the
next three year programme. In phase two we hope to build upon the success of
the Waste Management Programme adopted during phase one.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
A biofiltration installation utilising Mónashell media and biofiltration process was installed,
inoculated and commissioned by Bord na Móna Environmental Ltd. at the Rosderra Meats facility,
Edenderry.
The MONASHELL odour control unit at Rosderra Meats – Edenderry was installed and
commissioned in July 2004. The odour control unit was emptied of spent media and refilled with
fresh shell media in October 2006, August 2009, April 2011, June 2013, May 2015 and March
2016. This unit is treating air from the DAF unit and the balance tank. The total design airflow rate
is 2,500 m3/hr.
In order to ensure the correct performance of this unit Rosderra Meats requested a Health Check
be conducted on the biofilter.
This report contains the results of the Health Check conducted on the unit on 25th May 2016.

5.0 DISCUSSION
At the time of the visit the loading on the Biofilter was normal as per Table 3.1, Colourmetric tubes
could not detect Total mercaptan and Dimethyl sulphide concentrations at the lowest limits of
detection. The system is operating slightly below its design loading of 2,500 m3/hr. Gas stream
analysis indicates that Hydrogen sulphide and Ammonia is being reduced across the unit, therefore
sufficient abatement is occurring across the unit of each parameter measured.
Bulk density analysis also indicates that the media is in good condition. Volumetric flow needs to be
maintained to the design criteria to insure appropriate pollutants feed onto the media.
Shells appear in good condition, they are saturated and not noticeably solidifying. The sprinklers were
in responsible condition however they need to be cleaned on an ongoing basis to ensure a sufficient
even spray covering the entire media surface. The height of the media from the roof in is average
0.30m to 0.35m. Media is usually replaced once the height from the roof reaches 1.2m, or has
degraded to such an extent it is not treating the air stream or in general after seven years.
Maintaining the air flows to the design criteria and ensuring that the media is properly moistened by
the sprinkler system should maintain the CFU count and ensure that sufficient pollutants are present
to feed microorganisms in the media. Currently the CFU count is in excellent condition.
Drain water analysis results can be viewed in table 3.4 above. pH levels were measured to be 7.7.
Calcium carbonate present in the shells generally help neutralise the pH of the sump water. BOD
concentrations were measured to be <2 mg/l O2 which is within expected levels.. COD levels were
27 mg/l O2. Ammonia was present in low levels and inorganic sulphates were measured at a
concentration of 691 mg/l.
.
6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS:
Continue to check ductwork/Inspection Hatches regularly for any air ingress.
Continue to check irrigation system regularly to ensure the media is kept moist.
Continue to check nozzles daily and clean as required.
Continue to clean strainers on a weekly basis and replace as necessary.
Continue to operate as per the O & M Manual.
Continue to carry out Health Check every 6 months to ensure correct operation as per
current practices.

5.0 DISCUSSION
At the time of the visit the loading on the Biofilter was high as per Table 3.1, Colourmetric tubes could
not detect Ammonia concentrations at the lowest limits of detection. The system is operating below
its design loading of 2,500 m3/hr. Gas stream analysis indicates that Hydrogen sulphide and Dimethyl
sulphide were above the methods limits of detection in the inlet works. However despite this,
significant abatement is occurring (>91 – >99%). Total Mercaptans were detected at 15ppm in the
inlet and 5ppm in the outlet which signifies >66% abatement.
Bulk density analysis indicates that the media is in good condition. Volumetric flow needs to be
maintained to the design criteria to insure appropriate pollutants feed onto the media.
Shells appear in good condition, they were wet in appearance and not noticeably solidifying. The
sprinklers were in good condition however they need to be cleaned on an ongoing basis to ensure a
sufficient even spray covering the entire media surface. The height of the media from the roof in is
average 0.30m to 0.35m. Media is usually replaced once the height from the roof reaches 1.2m, or
has degraded to such an extent it is not treating the air stream or in general after seven years.
Maintaining the air flows to the design criteria and ensuring that the media is properly moistened by
the sprinkler system should maintain the CFU count and ensure that sufficient pollutants are present
to feed microorganisms in the media. Currently the CFU count is in excellent condition.
Drain water analysis results can be viewed in table 3.4 above. pH levels were measured to be 6.9.
Calcium carbonate present in the shells generally help neutralise the pH of the sump water. BOD
concentrations were measured to be <2 mg/l O2 which is within expected levels. COD levels were
<10 mg/l O2. Ammonia was present in low levels and inorganic sulphates were measured at a
concentration of 1,143 mg/l.
