Letter from the Chair

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to be able to report to you on the continuing success of meeting our mission at Easter Seals Wisconsin. With your compassionate support, we continue to provide help, hope, and answers for individuals with disabilities and special needs and their families whose needs cannot be overlooked. We are inspired by the life-changing outcomes of our advocacy, our services, and the economic impact that our programs offer to individuals, families, and communities. Although we are providing the opportunity and expertise, the people we serve give back with personal growth, independence, confidence, and triumphs.

The outcome of Easter Seals Wisconsin’s efforts, to help individuals be self-sufficient contributors to society, allows them to live their lives with dignity.

As you will read in the following report, our programs have again excelled at meeting the needs of our communities. Camp Wawbeek served 1,271 campers and 808 campers were served at Respite Camp. Our FARM Program served 459 farmers. Self-Employment Services and the Disability Helpline of Outagamie County continue to assist and guide adults with disabilities toward independence and self-sufficiency.

The management, staff, and volunteers of Easter Seals Wisconsin are truly remarkable people, accomplishing exceptional results in the face of an ever-changing environment. Knowing there will always be challenges we must face, and that change is inevitable, the work at Easter Seals Wisconsin is first and foremost about the people we serve, their families, and their communities. It is through your generosity and partnership that the foundation for our continuing success has been built.

We thank you for your kindness and support and promise to continue to deliver the preeminent programs you can be proud of.

Camp and Respite Services

Time off from caring for another − a respite − is the number one need of families with a loved one with disabilities in Wisconsin. To address that need, Easter Seals Wisconsin Camps (Camp Wawbeek and Wisconsin Elks/Easter Seals Respite Camp, both located in Wisconsin Dells) offer well-deserved breaks for parents and caregivers while their loved ones enjoy innovative recreational opportunities in an accessible environment.

Camp WawbeekWhile fun is the top priority at Camp Wawbeek, campers gain new skills, report increased independence, and have the opportunity to make lifelong friends who can provide a year-round network of social support. In 2016-2017, 1,271 campers enjoyed the “Wawbeek Experience,” almost doubling the number of campers served just ten years ago.

Our outstanding staff work hard to ensure that our camp programs continue to evolve to best meet the needs of campers and their families.

Wisconsin Elks/Easter Seals Respite CampThe Wisconsin Elks/Easter Seals Respite Camp is the only statewide, overnight respite program in Wisconsin. It serves hundreds of people from around the state, including many from counties where few or no respite programs exist. In 2016-2017, 808 campers attended Respite sessions. Most Respite campers have severe cognitive, physical, or behavioral disabilities and many are medically fragile, highly disruptive or cannot be left alone because they could harm themselves or others. Respite Camp operates sessions year-round. They provide one-to-one care as needed and individualized recreational opportunities for campers − providing that all-important break for caregivers.

Statistics from annual camper family surveys.

AmeriCorps PartnershipThe Easter Seals Wisconsin − AmeriCorps Partnership is an integral part of Easter Seals Wisconsin Camps. In 2016-2017, 52 AmeriCorps members served year-round at both Camp Wawbeek and Respite Camp, contributing immeasurably to the quality and scope of programs offered.

These members secure community volunteers who help make it possible for Easter Seals Wisconsin to serve even more children and adults with disabilities and their families. From Veterans’ Family Camps to Transitions Weekends, AmeriCorps members contribute thousands of hours of service to the community, making a deep impact.

Vocational Services

Easter Seals Wisconsin is proud to provide vocational services for people with disabilities throughout the state of Wisconsin. The purpose of these services is to help people with disabilities explore and pursue employment options. This may involve providing recommendations for ways to accommodate their disability in their current job, or assistance in finding or creating a new career that may better suit their needs.

There are two primary Vocational Services Programs: Self-Employment Services and the FARM Program. In both programs, Rehabilitation Specialists provide guidance and support, recommend methods of accommodating disabilities, help identify community resources including referrals to funding sources, and provide disability awareness training and education.

Self-Employment ServicesWhile traditional workplaces cannot always accommodate every disability, self-employment may offer an alternative path to self-sufficiency. Easter Seals Wisconsin's Self-Employment Services program helps entrepreneurs determine the feasibility of their business idea and complete a business plan to achieve their goal of starting their own business.

A survey conducted among Self-Employment Services entrepreneurs showed that 86% of clients who completed a business plan with the help of Self-Employment Services continued to successfully operate a business for at least one year, and 71% were not employed prior to assistance from Self-Employment Services.

In 2016-2017, Self-Employment Services worked with 15 individuals to help their dream of owning a business come true. Easter Seals Wisconsin’s Self-Employment Services program is truly making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

Frahm’s Sugar Creek FarmAfter two major work-related injuries, Perry

Frahm was no longer able to work in competitive employment. With previous experience in maple syrup production, Perry had the knowledge and

desire to build a successful business and become independent again through self-employment.

FARM ProgramSince 1991, the Easter Seals Wisconsin FARM (Farm Assessment and Rehabilitation Methods) Program has specialized in helping farmers return to farming after a disabling illness or injury, or continue farming with a chronic condition. They can also assist people with disabilities to begin an agricultural career. The FARM Program offers the resources and support to help people achieve their goals of developing a successful farm operation.

In 2016-2017, 459 farmers were served. This highly-regarded program serves as the national model for similar programs, not only in methods used and success rates, but because of their successful partnership with the Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), and with UW-Extension to form AgrAbility of Wisconsin. The FARM Program provides DVR with on-site assessments and rehabilitation plans for eligible farmers.

Beginning Farmer Program PartnershipThe Beginning Farmer Program is funded by a USDA grant received by the FARM Program in partnership with the Wisconsin Farm Center and UW-Extension. The goal of this program is to provide outreach and individualized guidance, information, and technical assistance necessary for farmers and farm families to develop and implement sustainable succession plans for their farm business operations to transition to the next generation of beginning farmers. Since the program’s first year in 2015, it has exceeded all of its goals and will continue to serve this population of farmers in Wisconsin again through 2017-2018.

Easter Seals Wisconsin’s FARM Program is nationally honored and serves as a national model to similar programs across the nation.

Jones FarmOver twenty years ago, Darrel Jones was involved

in an ATV accident, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. After recovery, and despite his

disability, Darrel was determined to continue running a successful operation.

This portable lift system gives Jones the independence he needs to operate his farm.

Revitalized Brand of Easter SealsSomething looks different… We’re glad you noticed! On September 1st we launched a new, revitalized brand. It’s a re-introduction to the public of Easter Seals as the indispensable resource for individuals and families facing today’s disabilities. It’s something our national organization has focused on for almost two years, and we’re excited to unveil the results to our friends and supporters.

The new look is a continuation of an evolving organization. “The look is fresh and clean and revitalized," said Christine Fessler, Easter Seals Wisconsin President & CEO. “We’re not changing the work we do. We’re still providing the same services in the community, but we want to become more relevant for the world we’re living in. We want people to look at this logo with a fresh eye and give us a second look.”
