MD Anderson is ranked the No. 1 cancer center in the United States according to U.S. News and World Report “Best Hospitals” survey and ranks first in the number of research grants awarded and total amount of grant funds given by the National Cancer Institute.

Through this partnership, MD Anderson Cooper physicians adhere to the philoso-phy, processes and guidelines set by MD Anderson in Houston, Texas, and patients receive the same proven treatment plans provided at MD Anderson. Patients will also have access to more clinical trials, for more types of cancer and benefit from the cutting-edge translational research conducted at MD Anderson as a result of this relationship.

The MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper building, located on the Cooper Health Sciences Campus in Camden, is the cornerstone of this partnership. At this new center, patients experience MD Anderson’s signature, multidisciplinary approach to care in a state-of-the-art set-ting close to home.

Simulation Laboratory

The Cooper University Hospital Simulation Laboratory (SimLab) is dedicated to advancing health care provider edu-cation at all clinical

levels. Our goal is to achieve realistic, accurate, real-time medical simulation using state-of-the-art technology. Computer-generated scenarios, simulating acute medical conditions in lifelike mannequins/ trainers, allow participants to develop skill sets in a safe, controlled environment removed from the clinical setting.

Facilitators trained in the use of computer- driven simulation adjuncts provide one-to-one and small-group instruction using lifelike mannequins. Attention is focused on maintaining a non-threatening learning environment, providing adequate mecha-nisms for positive feedback and developing a supportive student-facilitator relationship.

The SimLab currently employs adult, pediatric and specialty VR simulators to train residents in patient assessment, respiratory and cardiac arrest, acute air-way emergencies, sepsis management, central line placement, laparoscopy, bron-choscopy and endoscopy/colonoscopy. Motivated residents have an opportunity to be trained as SimLab instructors in areas of clinical interest. Course develop-ment is underway on team-building and crisis management.

Cooper Research Institute

The Cooper Research Institute (CRI), cre-ated in 2003, provides focused administra-tive and financial support

services for research and program ser-vice grants to the entire Cooper Health System. CRI provides researchers with regulatory-mandated education, biosta-tistical support and guidance through the Institutional Review Board process. The institute helps researchers secure grants from government agencies, foundations and industry, allowing them to continue Cooper’s long history of medical research.

Through basic and clinical research, Cooper University Hospital researchers bring medical discoveries to life and pro-vide thousands of South Jersey patients access to cutting-edge treatment in the fields of cancer, cardiovascular disease, critical care medicine, diabetes, orthopae-dics, stroke and surgery. Cooper faculty members conduct over 400 NIH founda-tion- and industry-sponsored clinical trials each year. Many of these trials are only available to patients of South Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia area at Cooper.

Library Services

The CMSRU Library provides a wide range of information resources and ser-vices. The collection reflects the demand for access to electronic materials with 4,500 e-journals and 1,400 e-books. A small, print collection of core journals, textbooks, study/review books, handbooks and atlases is maintained as well. Both collections are supplemented by an active and efficient document delivery service. Reference librarians can help users with quick searches and do-it-yourself search training. The librarians also perform expert, comprehensive searches of databases and Internet resources on request.

Library resources are accessed through the home page. The library offers 40 pub-lic computers, with three printers and a scanner. In order to provide an optimal environment for research and study we have established designated areas for quiet study as well as interactive group work. The library makes available three group study rooms and 14 study carrels.

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University

Rowan University and The Cooper Health System partnered in June 2009 to establish Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), the 135th medical degree-granting medical school in the country and the first

new medical school in New Jersey in 35 years. It welcomed its charter class of 50 students in August 2012. Currently, 261 students are enrolled at CMSRU, and the student population will eventually grow to a total of 400 students.

CMSRU received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in June 2011. In June 2014, the LCME granted CMSRU its pro-visional accreditation, with zero issues of non-compliance. This is the fourth step of the five-step LCME accreditation process, which will be complete when the charter class graduates in 2016.

Cooper University Hospital’s physicians serve as the clinical faculty for CMSRU.

The Cooper campus is anchored by Cooper University Hospital, along with Cooper Medical School of Rowan University,

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, Coriell Institute for Medical Research and Three Cooper Plaza.

Although CMSRU is a new school, the Cooper faculty is not new to teaching. Cooper served as the core clinical campus for the former UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School-Camden for over 30 years, where Cooper faculty educated third- and fourth-year students during their clinical rotations.

CMSRU’s Medical Education Building is located on the Cooper Health Sciences Campus on South Broadway, between Benson and Washington Streets in Camden. The new $139 million building, which opened July 2012, was designed for CMSRU’s curriculum with spaces and technologies to support faculty and students in their educational process.

For more information about CMSRU’s innovative curriculum, visit CMSRU’s website at rowan.edu/coopermed.

Coriell Institute for Medical Research

Coriell Institute for Medical Research, founded in 1953, is an independent non-profit research center dedicated to the study of the human genome. Expert staff and pioneering programs in the fields of personalized medicine, cell biology, cytogenetics, genotyping and biobanking drive the Institute’s Mission. The Coriell Personalized Medicine Collaborative (CPMC) research study seeks to under-stand the usefulness of genetic risk and pharmacogenomics in clinical decision-making and healthcare management. Coriell’s biobanking operation is funded by several National Institutes of Health awards.

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper

Cooper University Health Care and MD Anderson Cancer Center partnered in September 2013 to create MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.

The MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper building, located on the Cooper Health Sciences Campus in Camden, is the cornerstone of this partnership. At this new center, patients experience MD Anderson’s signature, multidisciplinary approach to care in a state-of-the-art setting close to home.
