EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Universal Greening Organisation (UGO) is a non-profit organisation which was founded by Tshitwamulomoni Talifhani who is a student at the University of Venda under School of Environmental Sciences. The main objective of the organisation is to interchange information with the society about environmental conservation and preservation. We assist communities in resolving environmental issues that they face in their respective societies. In this manner UGO assist communities in playing a significant role in the comprehension of Section 24 of the Constitution of RSA, which advocates for creation of an environment that is not harmful to the health and welfare of the people of South Africa and those who lives in it. UGO reaches different schools within Vhembe district to advance the knowledge and techniques of learners towards green world. As the organization we are firm and ready to fight for the protection of our natural resources .We do Environmental awareness as our main approach to reach people and make them aware of their role and responsibilities to build safe and clean environment. The organisation is operating guided by the following themes: Climate Change, Water and sanitation, Energy, Biodiversity, Food security and Solid waste pollution. This helps people to understand their role and responsibilities to mitigate the impact of these six aspects. The world is moving towards green economy which is why we must ensure sustainability in our resources for the benefits of current and future generations. The organization seeks to remain unique and recognised for its style and approach towards bringing environmental solutions. UGO has introduced its tactic of engaging undergraduate students into work integrated learning through research projects. Our objective is to develop reports with real, achievable and measurable recommendations on how to address issues encountered by communities within Vhembe district. This involves working with relevant stakeholders in addressing those issues. For example: “If we identify that the community is using water from the river which is contaminated we then engage department of water affairs to address the matter”. During our course we tend to involve traditional leaders, school principals, Government departments and private companies across the district. The organization seeks to advance recommendations for waste collection strategies at Univen and communities within Vhembe district. Solid waste pollution has been one of the major problems in the district since the level environmental education is very poor. As the organisation we are pledging to keep our district clean and attracting. Thohoyandou has been one of the dirtiest towns in the district with lots of solid waste in the centre on the town. We are invigorated by the situation at Thohoyandou to be the first non-profit-organisation to bring viable solutions to the problem. It must be the collective work between different stakeholders as to bring viable solutions and protect our district. We are also looking forward to engage different stakeholders and sign MOUs to solidify the relationship. Currently we working on securing a deal with the following entities: LEDET (Limpopo economic development, environment and tourism), TECC (Tshikovha environmental communications and consulting) and PETCO. We are looking forward to be recognised nationally within the period of five years and then our journey will continue to international bodies in our operation. The organisation will be an international entity as time goes on since we are aiming to influence the decisions in the worldwide space.
