AHRI is proud to be the voice and advocate for the HVACR industry.

Always focused on the health and future of our industry, we work

with our member companies here and around the world for the

benefit of those who depend on our products and equipment for

comfort, safety, and health.

As you peruse these pages, you will notice that in 2016, our globally

recognized, industry respected certification program continued to

grow, adding 59 new participants. Through our global network of

independent, third-party laboratories, AHRI conducted more than

2,300 performance tests to ensure the accuracy of manufacturers’

performance claims. And to ensure an adequate supply of trained

technicians and installers, AHRI’s Rees Scholarship Foundation

awarded a record number of scholarships to deserving students,

instructors, and returning veterans interested in a career in our industry.

In Washington, AHRI’s government relations, regulatory, and public

affairs teams continued to advocate for our members both in the

federal agencies on rulemakings that affect them, and also on Capitol

Hill to pursue needed changes to the regulatory process. At the state

level, AHRI was successful in defeating harmful pieces of legislation

in Connecticut, Kansas, and Michigan.

We are proud to represent our 315 member companies, and we deeply

appreciate their commitment to our industry.

2016ANNUAL REPORT

In ways big and small, AHRI member products make life better for everyone.

The equipment they manufacture is part of the fabric of our everyday lives —

so ingrained that we take it for granted, rarely giving it a second thought.

Beginning with that early morning shower, and all throughout our day,

until we settle back in again to the comfort of our climate controlled homes

at night, AHRI members’ products are there … for all of us.

It’s not enough to expect our customers to simply trust us — we need to show them that the products and equipment they spend their hard-earned money on will perform as advertised.

How do we do that? By using a global network of third-party laboratories to continually test and certify equipment to verify product performance. We have done this on our own for more than 100 years…and we will continue to do it as a tangible demonstration of our global commitment to making life better.

… by advocating for legislative and regulatory solutions that help our member companies and their customers provide and enjoy affordable, energy efficient products and equipment. AHRI is the voice for the industry in regulatory agencies, Congress, and state legislatures, working to promote member businesses, consumer interests, and product performance.

AHRI members are an essential component of our legislative and regulatory advocacy efforts. By participating in agency rulemakings and establishing and maintaining relationships with elected representatives, our members represent the best of our industry. The legislative visits that are part of the AHRI Chairman’s Challenge grow — and are more effective — year by year.

The two-day grassroots advocacy event gave AHRI members the opportunity to learn more about important issues facing our industry, and to share their stories with their elected representatives.

“Our industry has a long and proven record of leadership when it comes to innovation and energy efficiency. But even as we innovate and develop the next generation of highly efficient equipment, we always have in mind the needs of our customers who are, after all, the people who buy and use our equipment to cool their data centers and hospitals, and heat their schools and homes.”

— Stephen Yurek, Speaking before the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power, June 10, 2016

…by being an advocate for a global industry.

AHRI works continuously toward harmonized standards for HVACR products around the world, and offers its certification program to international governments as a solution to energy and environmental challenges.

The ICARHMA group met during the 2016 AHR Expo.

As secretariat of ICARHMA, the International Council of Air-Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heating Manufacturers Associations, AHRI collaborates on issues of mutual interest to all eleven participating HVACR associations. [Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Europe (2), India, Japan, Korea, and the USA]

AHRI and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) agreed to develop a global qualification program for refrigerant supply chain networks, or a "refrigerant driving license," to ensure safe management of refrigerants.

17

AHRI staff and the leadership of the AHR Expo-Mexico cut the ribbon together to open the largest HVACR event in Mexico.

AHRI travels the globe to showcase our members’ dedication to advancing the industry, and to promote our world-class certification program.

The Low-Global Warming Potential Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program identifies and evaluates promising alternative refrigerants. Over the last seven years, AHRI’s program has produced 69 test reports, which are publicly available at www.ahrinet.org/AREP.

“It’s not going to be easy [phasing down HFC refrigerants globally], but we’re committed to doing it”

— Stephen Yurek, The Wall Street Journal, October 18, 2016

“Our member companies pushed for this [Montreal Protocol] amendment for years,” said Francis Dietz, a vice president of AHRI. “It’s sort of unusual for industry to spend a lot of time trying to get regulated. But we knew regulations of HFCs were coming down the pike, and we’re ready.”

— The New York Times, July 23, 2016

“The [Kigali] agreement is just the first step in a multistep process,” said AHRI President Stephen Yurek, “Our industry is hard at work doing the research on the HFC alternatives that will be used in the world’s air conditioners, heat pumps, and refrigeration equipment, and getting that right is certainly as important as reaching agreement.”

– The Washington Post, October 15, 2016

AHRI works with the media to ensure our message is disseminated far and wide.

The AHRI Annual and Spring Meetings are ideal for networking with other members and AHRI staff to discuss the most important issues facing our industry. During these meetings, more than 40 product sections discuss certification, policy, and regulatory issues, and develop relevant standards and guidelines for their products.

I am excited and proud to be part of AHRI, and am especially honored

to serve as Chairman in 2017.

As we interact with policy makers in a very different political climate,

we have positioned AHRI to be more proactive, more influential,

and part of the solution to the energy and environmental issues

we face today. We have done this by coordinating the efforts of the

regulatory, government relations, and public affairs offices to create

the synergies that allow us to be agile, nimble, and responsive to a

fast-moving legislative and policy arena.

Being successful means working together as one industry, speaking

with one voice. And being part of a trade association means our

voice on the critical issues of the day is amplified by the shared

experiences of the impressive array of very large, large, medium, and

small companies that make up our diverse membership.

I look forward to working with each of our members and our staff to

build on the successes outlined in this Annual Report — successes

made possible by the outstanding leadership of my predecessor,

Doug Young.

Sincerely,

Chris Drew

Making life better is what AHRI member companies strive to do every day,

both in the United States and around the world. Innovation, technology,

efficiency, affordability — all these are the hallmarks of our industry and

represent our commitment to the health, safety, comfort, and well-being

of citizens across the globe.
