History of the Kent Awards

The Kent Awards began in 2004 with 7 categories – Player, Coach, Club,School, Volunteer, Team and Outstanding Contribution. 2005 saw theintroduction of Junior Player and Junior Leader and in 2011 the Club Awardwas divided into small (1-4 courts) and large. In 2015 the LTA created a newBritish Tennis Awards Scheme and as a result in Kent we added Disability andCommunity Awards to our collection.

The Awards presented this evening will be for achievements in 2016. In somecategories there are outright winners and in others there is a shortlist ofpossible winners to be announced ‘Oscar’ style.

Winners of the categories which are included in British TennisAwards are nominated for the regional Awards as the nextstage of the National Awards.

2016 ShortlistAnton MatusevichIn British Tennis rankings Anton was ranked no 1 in the16&U age group and no 9 in the 18&U age group, andwas winner of the 18&U boys doubles at the NationalChampionships. He played at Wimbledon in thequalifying boys singles and main draw boys doubles,won 2 ITF Grade 4 tournaments, won the Eddie Herr16&U tournament in Florida and was semi-finalist in the16&U Orange Bowl.

Nell MillerIn British Tennis rankings Nell was ranked 14 in the 18&Uage group. She represented GB in the 16&U TennisEurope Summer Cup and in the Junior Federation Cupwhich qualified for the World Finals. Nell played atWimbledon in the qualifying girls singles and main drawgirls doubles winning in the first round. She won 3 ITFGrade 4 tournaments and was ranked ITF 250.

Emma RaducanuIn British Tennis rankings Emma was ranked no 2 in the14&U age group and 18 in the 16&U age group. Sherepresented GB in European Winter and Summer Cupsand was the youngest ever player to win an ITF Grade 5tournament and was runner-up in 2 further tournaments.

2016 Winners: Kent 10&U Girls Team

The Kent 10&U Girls Team won the first stage of 10&U County Cup and came 3rd atNational Finals. The team Captain was Harry Bushnell, and Vice-Captain Sarah Wray. Theplayers were Skye Bentum-Siripi, Madeleine Brown, Lauren Foster and Lois Newberry.

In stage 1 they beat Sussex 6-2, Hampshire & IOW 8-0, Dorset 8-0 and Surrey 6-2.At the National Finals they beat Hertfordshire 4-4 (on countback), North of Scotland6-2, Avon 6-2 and lost to Leicestershire.

2016 ShortlistAndy Burgoyne In 2016 Andy captained the Kent Men’s Team Captainand leads by example - inspiring, encouraging his team.He is devoted to Kent Tennis and has a high standard ofprofessionalism and a very positive relationship withthe players. He won the 35+ National Grass courtChampionshipsmen’s doubles event and representedGB in the Men’s 40s team.

Hazel Lindfield In January, Hazel won the National Indoor 55s doublestitle, and the singles and doubles at an ITF Grade 3 inWelwyn Garden City in April. She captained and playedfor the winning England 55s in the 4 Nations inWrexham in May and in Bournemouth, and, also inMay, she won the national 55s singles and doublestitles. Hazel represented GB in the World Champi-onships in Helsinki and the team came 5th.

Bob Milner In 2016, Bob was the runner-up at the British SeniorsClosed Grass Court Championship 75s Men’s Singlesand represented GB in the Men’s 75s team. Over theyears, he has made 94 Vets/Seniors appearances forKent, a very long period of service, and has four timesbeen with the GB team to the World Team Champi-onships in the past ten years.

Kent Men’s Team:National Championsat Summer County Cup

In the Summer County Cup the Kent men’s team led by Captain Andy Burgoyne andVice-Captain Robert Searle, became National Champions. They beat Derbyshire 7-2,lost to Essex 3-6, beat Surrey 7-2, beat S Wales 9-0, and beat Hertfordshire 5-1. Theywon on countback. The players were Andy Burgoyne, Lewis Burton, Alastair Filmer,James Davis, Jim May, Robert Searle, Matt Short, Francis Sargeant, Sean Thornley,Thomas Wright.

Kent Ladies Team:National Championsat Winter County Cup

In the Winter County Cup in November, led by Captain Holly Richards and Vice-CaptainJacqueline Darby, they won Division 1 and are therefore National Champions. They beatMiddlesex 8-1, beat Surrey 5-4 and beat Hertfordshire 5-3. The players were Holly,Jacqueline, Olivia Parson, Naomi Cavaday, Natasha Munday, Alice Gillan and Nell Miller.

BethersdenBethersden Tennis Club is a thriving club situated in the heart of the village. Established in1977 it is Tennismark accredited and is run by and for members providing social andcompetitive tennis for all ages and abilities. The Club has two well-maintained tarmacadamcourts with floodlights enabling members to play tennis throughout the year. Membershiphas grown to 380 and coaching to 300. The Club runs ladies, men’s and mixed teams in theAshford and District League and Kent Leagues and many internal social tournaments.

ChipsteadChipstead LTC is a small and buoyant village club with a very good junior coachingprogramme. They have active links with a local primary school, and link with the SevenoaksTennis coaching programme with many of their juniors now playing in teams and enteringtournaments. There is a very busy adult section with club social tennis several times a week.It’s a club with atmosphere!

2016 ShortlistCanterbury LTCIn 2016 Canterbury LTC hosted the Davis Cup aspart of Davis Cup Tour visit to Kent. The club hasincreased both junior and adult membership andhas recently resurfaced its courts to artificial clay.The performance of some of the club juniors hasbeen outstanding as is the club’s record in KentLeagues in which they have the second highestnumber of teams.

HorsmondenA lively, friendly club well known for tennis, social activitiesand for making new friends, offering opportunities for matchplays social events and tournaments to suit different abilities.2016 saw the addition of an exciting new competition “Super6s” where players across the generations are paired whilstraising money for Save the Children. Half of the 600 membersare under 18 and enjoy regular coaching sessions andtournaments as well as the popular free Sunday Junior Clubafternoons. In 2016, Head Coach, Zane Cheeseman wonSports Achiever of the Year at the Tunbridge Wells LoveWhere We Live Awards.

Old WilsoniansClub volunteers and the coaching team work together to createa great family friendly environment. The club has Tennismark+,robust financial plans and has paid off all loans for the newcourtside pavilion built in 2013. Overall membership is now 500and growth is in all age categories. Novice adults areencouraged to take the first step by the coach and the club doesnot ask for membership immediately. The club links with fourlocal schools and in 2016 ran three open days, threeTennis4Kids courses, an initiative for 14-25 year olds in the localadult education college, and events with a local SEN school.

2016 ShortlistUlysse Abbate (Shooters Hill)15 years old Ulysse has been a member at Shooters Hill forthe last six years, completing the Tennis Leaders Course twoyears ago and has since volunteered his time assisting thecoaching team. Always reliable and professional Ulysse’sstrength is listening, sharing his knowledge, using his tennisskills, encouraging the juniors and helping them improve andbuild their confidence. Ulysse completed over 50 hours ofvolunteering in 2016 and is a wonderful example of howvolunteering can benefit all.

Hannah Seppings (Bromley Tennis Centre)Hannah is a very enthusiastic assistant coach at BromleyTennis Centre. She is involved in lessons for tots, mini red,and players with learning difficulties of all ages. In some casesshe is the lead coach under supervision. Each week Hannahleads 3 classes seeing an a total of 30 children. She isresponsible for planning the lesson and embraces her owncreative flair and imagination. The children in these classesreally love Hannah and are developing well. She encouragesthem to attend the extra sessions to maintain their interestin tennis. She has recently passed her level 1 coaching course.

Theodore Teverson-Greig (The Parklangley Club)Theo devotes a large part of his spare time to being avolunteer in many fields. As a Tennis Leader he supports thecoaching programme at The Parklangley Club and he assiststournament officials helping to run the control desk attournaments. He is amiable, easy to approach and regularlyuses his own initiative to carry out his roles. For the Kent legof the recent Davis Cup Tour, Theo seized the opportunity tointegrate it into his Photography GCSE studies, and with theapproval of his teachers, he accompanied the publicity teamphotographing events in both Canterbury and in Bromley.

2016 ShortlistKem Hassan (Old Wilsonians) Throughout his 7 years of volunteering, Kem has been theperfect role model for our younger members, is respectedand admired by the adults and inspirational to youngermembers. Kem passed his level 1 coaching course and nowencourages many to play a further sessions in addition totheir weekly coaching lessons. Kem set up his own websiteoffering buddy hits to local residents and drew several adultsback to the sport. Kem has demonstrated great drive andpurpose at the club and fittingly he won the Men’s Singlestitle this year - a well-deserved accolade.

Caroline Ratcliffe ( Shooters Hill) Caroline provides the central support mechanism for thevolunteers, the Club, links with the LTA and the localcommunity. She encourages all players who come along to theclub to enjoy their tennis. In 2016 Caroline provided a casestudy for the LTA on volunteering development in a club. Sheencourages juniors and adults to develop their skills throughleader and coaching courses and she has attended courses runby the LTA and the local authority to help develop her ownskills. No problem is too great and is always willing to lookoutside the box to find a solution, all as a volunteer.

Chris Troke (Broadstairs & St Peter’s) Every club should have a Chris! For over 20 years Chris hasbeen on the Broadstairs Tennis Club committee representingthe club as ladies club captain and fixtures secretary. Chrisalso captains a Ladies and Mixed team playing in the EastKent and Kent leagues and represents the county andcaptains the Kent ladies over 65's team. Chris submits weeklytennis reports to ensure the club gets regular newspapercoverage. She still finds time to give up many of herweekends to run open days, fun days and tournaments.

2016 ShortlistNeil Biddle (Oakwood)Neil is a dedicated and enthusiastic coach who has grown thecoaching programme and the membership at Oakwood. Heorganises internal tournaments and teams for various eventsand leagues despite the limitations of only 3 courts. Nothingwill hold Neil back however, and he is working with the clubcommittee driving forwards a plan to build more courts. In2016 Neil helped John Ratcliffe with the organisation ofTennis4Kids courses as part of the Davis Cup Legacy and hetook part in an LTA consultation exercise to improve theprogramme for this year.

Matt Borthwick (The Parklangley Club)As well as being a great coach, Matt's best asset is his abilityto relate to all age groups. He really engages with youngpeople and being a great player himself, inspires them toachieve better while also learning to love tennis. He alsodemonstrates patience with middle-aged ladies, gentlypushing them to achieve better things than they think theyare capable of. Many have improved under his guidance andregularly take part in singles leagues and doublestournaments and some of them hadn’t picked up a racketuntil they were 40.

Danny Wynne (Danny Wynne Tennis Academy) Danny is the founder of the DWTA, the first tennis club onthe Island of Sheppey and submitted teams to Kentcompetitions in 2016 for the first time. DWTA had greatsuccess and the junior membership flourished. Heencourages the older children to get involved with coachingand has mentored them with their qualifications, guidingtheir progress through the game, whilst not being afraid tosee them leave to take their careers elsewhere. Danny justwants to see the all round growth of tennis.

2016 ShortlistBromley High Junior School Bromley High School has tennis as a key part ofthe sports curriculum all year round in both thejunior and senior school. The school plays hosteach year to the Kent Schools Orange and Greenteam events in the Summer term. Theyregularly enter teams into all the schoolstournaments throughout the year at both juniorand senior levels.

Glebe School Glebe Special Educational Needs School have taken tennis and made it their lead sport at theschool. Led by Mike Kitteridge, the Sports Coordinator, they run a daily lunchtime tennis cluband include tennis in their curriculum. Visiting coaches give students the chance of professionalcoaching and many of them attend additional sessions at Bromley Tennis Centre. 28 studentsplayed in the Bromley SEN Schools competition and some go to Regional Special Olympicscompetitions. In 2016 Glebe School provided the Bromley Borough team for the London YouthGames and they came 3rd against 32 London Boroughs. The school also promoted theParalaympic Day at the Houses of Parliament, sending 3 children to participate. Glebe Schooldoes a huge amount to promote disability tennis during and outside of school time.

Disability Programme of the YearPast Winners2015 Bromley Tennis Centre

2016 WinnerBromley Tennis Centre continues to offeran incredible amount of tennis opportunities foryoung people with various disabilities. Theynow link with 4 SEN schools in Bromley forcurriculum tennis sessions, and at the centrehold weekly coaching sessions and annualcompetitions. In 2016 Bromley was awardedSpecial Olympic accreditation under the bannerof London Tennis Foundation. Bromley partnerswith Charlton Athletic Football CommunityTrust delivering tennis within their mentalhealth programme and in 2016 this included 53 participants of various ages and mentalhealth issues. Visually Impared sessions began in 2016 in partnership with The ThomasPocklington Trust and SelVIS (South East London Visions). Bromley partners with WhizzKidzto deliver wheelchair sessions. In 2016 the programme leader Tom Defrates supported theBromley team at the London Youth Games where they came 3rd and he supports and advisesother Kent Clubs on the delivery of disability tennis.

Community Programme of the YearPast Winners2015 Community Tennis at Ladywell Fields

2016 WinnerKings Hill Community Tennis Club wasfounded in March 2016 in the local park, whichpreviously had no tennis provision. By the endof the year over 150 juniors participated on thecoaching programme, along with 3 differentadult programmes, including rusty rackets andwooden rackets for the 50+. By the end of 2016there were 11 different courses running andsuch has been the interest in the adult sectionthat the newly formed Community Club will beentering the Kent Leagues in 2017. The visionof the club is to give children a good introduction to health and fitness as well as developingsocial skills, whilst at the same time remaining affordable and always welcoming.
