Welcome from NADA’s President

Welcome to the 27th Annual Conference for the NADA protocol. This year the theme is NADA Wellness in the Land of Enchantment. New Mexico has long had among the highest per capita drug overdose death rates in the country, a problem driven mainly by heroin and prescription opiate abuse. Considering the statistic from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health that 8 of the 10 leading causes of death in New Mexico are linked to addiction, we hope that this confer-ence can bring inspiration and energy for introducing the NADA protocol to many people and programs in New Mexico and beyond. It is a well-established, cost-effective and non-pharmaceutical intervention that is ideally poised to be imple-mented widely in hospital and community settings as well as criminal justice settings, including drug courts. It is important to realize that addiction is a trauma based illness. Effective treatment needs to incorporate ways to teach people how to relax and manage stress and trauma without using addictive substances, allowing them to learn that they have a natural instinct to heal and recover their well-being. Acudetox can be the first thing a person experiences in treatment that has an immediate effect – calming, relaxing and aiding sleep. This can then help them be more open to the other, necessary as-pects of treatment. We are excited to offer a rich program that highlights areas where NADA has been integrated effectively, both in inpatient and outpatient settings, to help with addiction, mental health and trauma treatment.

Whether you are new to NADA or a long time member, I welcome you to the conference and encourage you to introduce yourself and visit with me and the other board members. We encourage all questions you may have about NADA. In the “Spirit of NADA” we welcome all suggestions you may have as to how NADA can help open the path to recovery for people challenged by addictions, mental illness and emotional trauma.

NADA Mission StatementThe National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA), a not-for-profit training and advo-cacy organization, encourages community wellness through the use of a standardized auricular acu-puncture protocol for behavioral health, including addictions, mental health, and disaster and emo-tional trauma. We work to improve access and effectiveness of care through promoting policies and practices which integrate NADA-style treatment with other Western behavioral health modalities.
